Dunith Wellalage barely bowls a bad ball. He keeps the pressure on.

You can just be out of form! It doesn't have to be a crisis.

That has to be the worst I’ve ever seen Joe Root play. Clearly not the wicket as Banton is doing so well, so maybe tiredness/fatigue? Very strange!

    Ollie, London

Is Joe Root finished at the top level? Probably an exaggeration but it's been a very strange summer where he's never quite looked like himself.

  4. Eng 72-2published at 16 overs

    Banton 52, Brook 1

How early is too early for me to remind you Tom Banton has not yet scored an international century?

Oh. I've gone and done it now...

Joe Root finished with a strike-rate of just 48 in his innings today, only once before has he played an innings of 30 balls or more at a lower strike-rate (23 strike rate, 7 off 30 v New Zealand, World Cup final 2019).

Tom Banton is even more important now. He goes to his fifty from 51 deliveries and there's a lady to my left on her feet applauding. I don't think she's his mum.

This is the first time Janith Liyanage has bowled on the tour.

A little bit unexpected for him to strike with his first ball.

    Root lbw b Liyanage 18 (Eng 68-2)

Hitting! The Oval is quiet now.

A good review from Sri Lanka, who thought about it for a fair while. It was just a straight ball from seamer Janith Liyanage angling towards leg stump.

Root missed it with a flick and his difficult innings is over.

    It's leg-side ish...

  10. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 15.1 overs

Joe Root may not be smiling after this. Sri Lanka review an lbw shot against him immediately after the stoppage.

If England win this series, then they have done alright in ODI cricket, despite the rankings. If they let this one go, then all of a sudden it does change the tone.

I am looking forward to seeing this spell from Dunith Wellalage.

Left arm angle, and he is angling it into the pads.

We have already seen the reverse sweep come out, which works when you get the bat on it.

  14. Eng 68-1published at 15 overs

    Banton 49, Root 18

Joe Root immediately looks more comfortable now he's able to tuck the spinner here and there. There is, of course, plenty of time for him to catch up later on.

Dunith Wellalage is a canny bowler.

  15. Eng 66-1published at 14.1 overs

A single to Joe Root! That run of dots ends at 13.

The last time Joe Root faced as many consecutive dot balls in an ODI as today was against Australia at Old Trafford in 2020, facing 17 dot balls in a row against Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Jason Roy was also run out with Root attempting to take a quick single during that 17-ball spell.

  17. Eng 65-1published at 14 overs

Dilshan Mudushanka responds well to keep Tom Banton down at that end.

Now, can Joe Root score a run? He's going to be facing spin for the first time because Dunith Wellalage is coming on.

Tom Banton weathered those early conditions.

What I have liked, is when it is not quite there you don't want to play those big expansive shots.

He has been very measured. Banton slaps it and that generates pace. It is up and flying into the crowd.

  19. 6 runs

    Eng 65-1published at 13.2 overs

Tom Banton upper cuts for six! All of the runs are coming from one end.

That 50 partnership between Joe Root and Tom Banton came up in exactly 11 overs.
