Next up, can Charlie Dobson join Matthew Hudson-Smith in tomorrow's 400m final?

A silver medallist two years ago, Dobson is the second-fastest European athlete of all-time behind his compatriot.

Injury has prevented him from competing since late June, and he has tough competition from the likes of Hungary's Attila Molnar and Frenchman Muhammad Abdallah Kounta in this semi-final.

Definately a few cobwebs he was dusting-off there.

He hasn't raced in a little while and you could see he was a little shaky-shaky on that final straight. But he held it together, he didn't panic.

He came to qualify. I think he got excited being at home. I mean, who wouldn't? He's been here since he was 10.

The cobwebs are off now. I think he's warm and he'll be ready for the final.

Matt Hudson-Smith didn't need to fight Jonas Phijffers in the first semi-final.

You can see Hudson-Smith has almost got a wry smile on his face now, as if to say: "Yeah, you can have that one, but I'll take the one that matters, come the final."

Really unfortunate for Ben Jefferies that he couldn't quite get through. He was having a stellar year.

Patrik Simon Enyingi of Hungary, who came through the first round yesterday, takes the second automatic qualifying spot with 45.02.

Great Britain's Ben Jefferies (45.38) was fifth and France's Samuel Vessat (45.40) faded to sixth after a fast start.

No change in the non-automatic qualifier seats with one semi-final to come.

Ben Jefferies goes in semi-final two.

The 26-year-old led out the British four in the mixed 4x400m final last night as they won silver.

Samuel Vessat, the French basketball convert, also races in this one.

Talking about Matthew Hudson-Smith...

I think the first 300m were adrenaline and then all of a sudden a bit of lactic at the end.

Who can blame him? This is his London 2012. This is a guy who knows every inch of this track. I can't imagine going into a championships on a track I've trained at all my life.

He's a very different athlete [now] to that one who used to come down here, three times a week in the rain and cold and wind, and now he's here.

He went off like an absolute bullet. It was almost like watching a plane taking off from Heathrow airport.

I was watching Matthew Hudson-Smith and he looked like he had a bit of a grimace.

I am hoping Matt is OK. Let's keep our fingers crossed that all is well.

Matthew Hudson-Smith flies down the back straight, covering the first 200m in about 21 seconds, and it ends up catching up with him.

He qualifies safely, albeit in second position behind Dutchman Jonas Phijffers, but clearly began to tie up in the closing stages.

He crosses the line in 44.78, with Phijffers running a personal best 44.63.

Huge cheers, as you would expect, for local lad Matthew Hudson-Smith, racing inside the stadium which he trained in as a junior and which now has his name across one of its stands.

This is about getting the job done, before hopefully putting on a show in the final.

On gold being a minimum requirement in Birmingham...

Most definitely. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete in your hometown, somewhere where you have trained since 10 years old. An opportunity I don't want to let slip by. Something that is going to kickstart the journey of the next cycle.

I know that the Commonwealth Games is such a big event, but I think it is quite understandable that this is something which is a once in a lifetime and something that I cannot let slip by.

Preparations have been going amazing. I am excited.

There's always pressure when you go into competitions.

I have been at the highest of levels since 2014 really. I am a world and Olympic medallist, European champion multiple times, so the target is always going to be on my back.

You have just got to lock it in. It is a bit more sentimental at my home track and I have my own stand. I am probably going to know half the people in the stand, but it is just another race and I have got to execute.

As ex-athletes, you come into this stadium and you feel that emotion. So for Matthew Hudson-Smith to be here in his hometown at his home track, it is special to have his family here tonight.

The races keep on coming, it's time for the men's 400m semi-finals.

It's a similar situation to the men's 100m with 12 qualifiers from yesterday joining the 12 highest-ranked athletes combining for three races. We've got three British athletes here, one in each race, all of whom skipped Monday's first round.

Great Britain's Matt Hudson-Smith is Europe’s fastest 400m runner for the fifth year in a row and will be racing at the venue where he started his career and which now has a temporary stand bearing his name.

Team-mate Ben Jefferies improved his PB to 44.66 when finishing second at the UK Championships, while Charlie Dobson won European silver two years ago but hasn’t raced since June because of injury. Zharnel Hughes, a frequent competitor at this distance for Great Britain, will only race individually in the 200m.

Elsewhere, France's Samuel Vessat once declared for the NBA draft, only took up athletics seriously last year and obliterated his national record with a time of 44.24 seconds on 26 July. Meanwhile European indoor champion Attila Molnar of Hungary goes in the third semi-final.

Two from each semi-final go through to Wednesday's final along with the next two fastest qualifiers.

Talking about Romell Glave...

That was beautifully run. I was smiling the whole way.

After the 60m, he was in cruise control and he just had that race in his palms. He knew what he was doing, he was so relaxed.

Fantastic out the blocks. Exploded. And that drive phase...

He talks about 50 to 70m being the best part of his race. Well, he was flying by 50m and just pulled himself away in that next 20m.

That was impressive.
