A British one-two-three? It could happen in the women's 200m final.

Amy Hunt is the newly crowned European 100m champion was quickest in the 200m semi-finals with a time of 22.37 seconds - she considers this to be her best event.

The Newark athletes is in lane eight here, with only team-mate Dina Asher-Smith outside her. Asher-Smith won this title in 2016 and 2018 and her tally of eight European medals is only bettered by the 10 of Polish ex-sprinter Irena Szewinska.

British champion Success Eduan (lane 3) also made it through yesterday's semi-finals as a non-automatic qualifier, so the host nation have this year’s three quickest Europeans in the final.

Great Britain have only twice swept the podium at a European Championships: the men’s 800m in 1986 (Steve Cram won bronze) and the men’s 200m in 1998. The only women’s 1-2 came in the 1950 high jump.

The main threat to the Brits could come from Ireland’s 2024 European 400m silver medallist Rhasidat Adeleke. Hamstring injuries this year have thwarted her one-lap plans but the 23-year-old’s raw speed was evident as she won her semi-final in 22.43.

Ireland's Mark English has a great back story. A qualified doctor, he is six years older than any of his competitors in this field.

But he broke the nearly 50-year-old championship record in the semi, and is backed by a large Irish support in Birmingham tonight.

The seven competing athletes have emerged onto the track for this final.
