    Starc c sub (Bosch) b Harmer 0 (Aus 60-7)

Could South Africa have wished for a better morning session?

They started the day with two wickets in the first over and end the session with a wicket which takes us into lunch.

Mitchell Starc is the latest to fall - being snaffled at short leg to give Simon Harmer another wicket. The umpires check for the inside edge, with replays showing it hit bat then pad before ballooning up.

  2. Aus 59-6published at 25 overs

South Africa turn to more spin in the form of Aiden Markram. Australia are gasping for air at the base of Table Mountain - never has a team needed lunch and the opportunity to regroup as much as they do.

Since we are going to need a spinner in South Africa, could we please reconsider Leach for the role. It always seemed crazy to me the way we discarded him given the consistency he provided to the team. I know that North has said no but I don't see why.

  4. Aus 56-6published at 24 overs

Mitchell Starc looks equally uncomfortable - hanging his bat as Harmer time and again beats the outside edge. South Africa have five men around the bat now... it feels like a matter of when, not if.

I think that's a tad harsh, Rob. He's definitely got something but he's not kicked on the way Australia will have hoped. He looks uncomfortable out there today, though.

Every ball is theatre and Green looks like he's sat in the wrong seat. Sharp exhales of breath after every ball, lots of prodding and poking and, of course, he ran out Josh Inglis.

I’ll eat my words if Green scores 180* to win it, but he looks like he isn’t a Test cricketer. Not good enough to bowl or bat, just making up the numbers.

  7. Aus 50-6published at 22 overs

Mitchell Starc looks accusingly at the footmarks as Simon Harmer gets another one to spit, turn and take the edge. It races away to the boundary and brings up the Australia 50.

Starc, of course, is one of the men responsible for creating all that rough outside the off stump.

Australia have long been a team that's associated with having a strong will and resilient mentality but in this game, and you could argue the series, they are seemingly lacking their usual fight and determination.

  9. Aus 46-6published at 21 overs

England's next Test is against South Africa and they'll surely need a spinner when they play at Cape Town in the third and final Test which begins on 3 January. Who will that spinner be?

  10. dropped catch

Starc dropped on 0published at 20 overs

    Aus 46-6

Dropped! Simon Harmer beats Mitchell Starc in the flight, the ball finds the shoulder of the bat and is dropped by first slip Aiden Markram after taking a deflection off the gloves of the keeper. A tough chance but a chance nonetheless.

So pleased for Harmer to play a big part in this series. He is admired hugely at my county Essex where he has been consistently brilliant for nearly a decade.

    Target 288

Australia are on the run and South Africa turn to Gerald Coetzee. Wearing a white bandana, he charges in and sends down a couple of bumpers. When he does bowl fuller, Cameron Green fends it for a fortunate four down to third.

For years I have been hunting the perfect hangover cure after a big Friday night; turns out it’s watching the Aussies being skittled!

    Connolly c Rickelton b Harmer 0 (SA 42-6)

This just keeps getting better and better for the South Africans.

Simon Harmer bowls a ripper to Cooper Connolly - flight, drift, drip and the ball tickles the outside edge where Ryan Rickelton is only too pleased to gobble it up.

Mitchell Starc is the new man in. Keep his seat warm, Cooper.

This is turning into a funeral procession for Australia....abysmal batting.

    Aus 42-5

This is turning into a Halloween horror show for Australia.

Alex Carey gets down to sweep and top-edges to a diving Marco Jansen at short backward point. Time to get on your broom, Alex. No sweeping needed here.

  17. Aus 42-4published at 17 overs

SA need six wickets to win

Josh Inglis walked off after that run out to the strains of Thriller on the PA system. I reckon the zombies in that music video set off faster than Cameron Green, pushing the ball off the back foot, did for that single. He really has chucked his mate under the bus with that one.

  18. Aus 41-4published at 16 overs

Alex Carey is the new batter for Australia and every tentative prod to Simon Harmer is met with oohs and aahs by the South African fielders.

Never a run. A bad call from Green.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15.3 overs

Inglis run out 4 (Aus 40-4)

    What is he doing?

Green pushes Harmer's off-break into the cover region, sets off for the run and ends up selling his mate, Josh Inglis, down the river. He's well short of his ground.

The Aussies in the changing room have their hands on their heads. This match is running away from them now.
