Winger Jaden Philogene is due to stay at Ipswich.

Bologna, Roma and Benfica were among several clubs who held an interest in the 24-year-old, who helped Ipswich to promotion from the Championship last season, scoring 12 league goals.

But no move has progressed and he is expected to be involved in Gary O'Neil's squad going forward, although Philogene had his pre-season interrupted by a hamstring injury and is yet to play in the Tractor Boys' opening three games.

Despite a possible transfer Philogene returned for pre-season focused and impressed those at Portman Road with his attitude.

  3. Abraham to stay at Villa after rejecting Ipswich movepublished at 08:17 BST

    Tammy AbrahamImage source, Getty Images

Tammy Abraham will stay at Aston Villa after rejecting a loan move to Ipswich Town.

The striker has decided to fight for his place at Villa Park after the arrival of Nicolas Jackson for £65m.

Abraham scored three goals in 19 appearances last season after joining from Besiktas for £18.25m in January.

Villa were open to letting him leave but, as BBC Sport reported in July, the 28-year-old is happy at Villa Park despite Ipswich pursuing a loan move last week.

Boss Unai Emery said: "Now we have one striker, Jackson, and we are very happy with him. We have Brian Madjo, but he is injured, and Tammy Abraham's decision is to stay here.

"We opened the door for him but he's decided to stay here with us. I am going to be very demanding with him to add his qualities with us.

"Tammy is coming back to the Premier League. I spoke with him. He needs time but he needs to do it as soon as possible to adapt to the Premier League. He didn't perform like we wanted last year."

Abraham had previously played for Villa on loan from Chelsea, scoring 25 goals to help them return to the Premier League, in 2018-19.

He left Chelsea for Roma in 2021 and also played for AC Milan on loan in 2024-25, before six months at Besiktas in Turkey - scoring 12 goals in 24 appearances - ahead of his return to Villa earlier this year.

  6. 'Cover for Davis is a bare minimum' - fans on what Ipswich still need to dopublished at 18:25 BST 31 August

We asked you what transfer business Ipswich need to complete before Tuesday's 23:00 BST deadline.

Here are some of your comments:

Adam: An established striker and a left-back as cover for Leif Davis are a bare minimum. Another left-footed central defender would do nicely as well.

Donal: We need another centre-forward and another backup forward. Chuba Akpom is not a Premier League player in my view, nor is Jaden Philogene. Jack Clarke has to be kept, as he has arguably been Town's best player since the run-in last season and he showed what he has to offer at this level against Sunderland.

Martin: I think Gary O'Neil still needs a experienced striker and another centre-back.

Nick: This summer has been amazing for us. The signings have all been a massive improvement to the squad. I still think we could do with another number nine and maybe a right-back.

Paul: I'm still concerned about our defence in the Premier League. It's not changed much since two years ago. We need at least one top centre-back in my opinion.

We asked for your thoughts after Sunday's Premier League game between Manchester United and Ipswich Town.

Here are some of your comments:

    Man Utd fans

Peter: Happy with the win but we would have lost against better teams performing like that, especially in the first half. If it weren't for one man, Bruno Fernandes, it would have been a bad day.

Phil: Good performance from the midfield. You could see that something is forming. Better than last week, that's for sure, but some positions need a touch-up, like left-back. There would be no harm enquiring about Leif Davis from Ipswich - I said it a couple of years ago and he is getting better.

Matthew: The better side won. I do think that the own goal should have been disallowed. Good to see United actually attacking with a threat and not letting their heads go down too much after conceding.

Gerry: Sloppy play at times and lucky with two goals. Mainoo and Fernandes outstanding.

    Ipswich fans

Richard: We had no luck after the Nunez slip. United were ruthless. Ipswich's season will not be defined by these games. Very soggy walk to tram stop!

Tony: Not good enough. Team selection was totally wrong against a good Manchester United side. No good strikers again showed a lack of quality in squad. Where were all the other new players?

Steve: As an avid Ipswich fan, it's what I expected - we haven't had time to gel and were against an experienced, established Premier League side. I think we were unlucky and United were lucky to score five.

  8. 'A clear' and 'deliberate' handball from Maguire published at 08:55 BST 31 August

    Media caption,

Match of the Day pundits Ellen White and Shay Given discuss the refereeing controversy at Old Trafford as a Harry Maguire handball was deemed accidental, meaning a Jacob Greaves own goal stood.

Given said: "It is a clear handball. His hands are not in a natural position. It is a deliberate handball and a deliberate motion towards the ball."

White added: "It is a very unnatural position to be going to protect your face. It does feel like a handball and it does feel deliberate."

  9. 'We've got to crack on with it and react better in those moments' - O'Sheapublished at 07:34 BST 31 August

    Media caption,

Ipswich Town captain Dara O'Shea has said their 5-2 defeat at Manchester United was "very much" a game of two halves.

"We came in at half-time in a good place," O'Shea told BBC Radio Suffolk. "We were disappointed with conceding a goal, but it's a mistake and these things happen.

"We felt like we were the better team and that we were more dangerous.

"Second half is a different story. We were extremely unlucky with the second goal. I don't really understand the ruling, or how it counts, but that's football.

"We've been in these situations before. VAR hasn't been our friend before and it might be the same again.

"We've got to crack on with it and react better in those moments.

"There will be moments where things don't go our way, so it's a lesson and we've got to learn."

  10. Man Utd 5-2 Ipswich: How the players ratedpublished at 20:25 BST 30 August

Chief football news reporter Simon Stone byline banner
    Media caption,

    Ipswich Town starting XI:

Kjell Scherpen: Superb save to deny Dalot the opener and crucial touch to deny Mbeumo an easy finish. No chance with the equaliser. 8

Dara O'Shea: Robust defensive display and did well, until Fernandes took control. 6

Issa Diop: Lot of scrambling defence for the former West Ham man but coped OK for the most part and talked the Ipswich rearguard through the game. 6

Jacob Greaves: Composed on the ball and held his position, not getting drawn out when Cunha dropped deep. Probably lacked a bit of class at this level. 6

Leif Davis: Superb pass inside Dalot to release Maeda created one good chance for the visitors. Precise execution for his goal and might have had another. 8

Marcelino Nunez: Busy, in front of defence, wants to get on ball and slot in between centre-halves. Disastrous slip at just the wrong time let Man Utd in for crucial equaliser. 6

Sasa Lukic: Excellent addition to Ipswich ranks. Had the game nous to halt the home side's momentum, even at the expense of a yellow card. 7

Abdul Fatawu: Skinned Shaw close to the touchline and then had the awareness to pick out a team-mate as Ipswich took the lead. Booked for a poor tackle on Mbeumo but overall really good. 7

Julio Ensico: Held off Shaw and Mbeumo on length-of-field run but no reward as effort lacked power. A real threat. 8

Daizan Maeda: Good early raid down the left was early sign of Ipswich intentions. Shot from angle of area threatened home goal. 7

Emersonn: Tried use his size to pin Maguire and Martinez back and relished the physical tussle with the England man. 6

    Ipswich Town substitutes:

Chuba Akpom (on 46, Emersonn): 7

Exequiel Palacios (62, on for Nunez): 6

Darnell Furlong (on, for Maeda 72): 6

Abdoul Ouattara (on for Lukic 73): 5

Kasey McAteer (83, for Fatawu): 5

Subs not used: Walton, Kipre, Egeli, Clarke

  11. Man Utd 5-2 Ipswich: What O'Neil saidpublished at 19:11 BST 30 August

    Media caption,

Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil speaking to Sky Sports: "Really unlucky to be 2-1 down, really unlucky. Two of the most unlucky goals you will see, but then [we were] not good enough to get back into it. We got punished by a very good side.

"To beat Manchester United at Old Trafford you need the moments to go in your favour and they didn't. Rules can go against you, or a deflection, there are lots of things that can happen in a game that are beyond your control.

"It is a complicated rule - handball if it's the goal scorer, but not if it takes a deflection and was heading off the target. I think that is tough for a referee.

"But no problem. I'm not here to moan about refs. We get no points. At Old Trafford a lot of people leave with no points, but we leave with an understanding of where to get better.

"We have three points from two tough games. A good start for us. It is the Premier League and the lads understand there will be highs and lows. We don't want there to be too many lows but the lads are fine in there. They understand."

    Did you know?

    • Ipswich's Jacob Greaves became just the second player to score an own goal and concede a penalty against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League after Jan Bednarek back in February 2021. There were just two minutes and 45 seconds between Greaves scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty.

    • Ipswich Town have played more Premier League games at Old Trafford without ever winning than they have at any other ground.

For almost 40 minutes it felt like this was going to be a dream day for Ipswich, who were bidding to make it six points from two games.

But then their heads went in dramatic style and at times it felt more like the famous 9-0 defeat by the Red Devils in 1995.

They started so well - and Enciso could have given them the lead earlier when he held off Mbeumo and Luke Shaw when running from the halfway line before being denied by Lammens.

Davis scored a lovely opener after Fatawu, relegated from the Championship with Leicester last season, had beaten Shaw too easily on the wing. Not long after the pair combined again, but this time Davis' shot was saved.

There was an element of bad fortune to the way they were pegged back with Nunez, standing about 65 yards away from his own goal, set to deal with the ball before losing his footing to allow United to race through and score.

Greaves then had a spell to forget with his own goal and penalty concession in the space of two minutes and 45 seconds.

Their demise was best demonstrated when Enciso lost the ball immediately from the kick-off after Fernandes' third goal and the Portuguese almost lobbed Kjell Scherpen from 50 yards.

Gary O'Neil's side did not manage a shot between the 49th minute and injury time.

  15. Sutton's predictions: Man Utd v Ipswichpublished at 11:01 BST 30 August

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

Well done to Ipswich for their start. It took them 11 games to get the first win under Kieran McKenna the last time they were in the Premier League and they've got off to a great start already.

Under Gary O'Neil they have got a bit about them - they've got players who can get them up the pitch, they have got pace with Daizen Maeda and Emersonn looks a bit of a handful.

I think they could cause United one or two problems but it's unthinkable that Manchester United could lose their opening two games of the season. Their start was an absolute stinker - they were very flat against Hull.

With respect, it was an open goal start for the season for them, with Hull then Ipswich - two promoted sides - and it would be bordering on catastrophic for Michael Carrick if they lose again.

I remember the days when United used to beat Ipswich 9-0 but I don't think it will be nine and I think Ipswich will score. I think Ipswich will score first but United will come from behind to win - panic over, Carrick's the king again.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

  16. Man Utd v Ipswich: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 12:58 BST 29 August

    Chris Adams
    BBC Sport journalist

Manchester United will look to bounce back from defeat by one newly promoted side when they take on another at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Ipswich Town the visitors.

The surprise 2-0 reverse against Hull City on the opening weekend was just Michael Carrick's third loss in 18 games across his two spells as the club's head coach, and it came despite United having 71.7% possession.

It was their biggest share of possession in a league game since September 2023, but there are just eight recorded examples of United having more of the ball in a Premier League defeat.

The table shows the Premier League defeats (since 2003-04) in which Manchester United have had the greatest share of possession. Last week's defeat to Hull City, with 71.7% of the ball, ranks ninth in the list.

Carrick, who gave competitive debuts to summer signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, said improvements were needed but added: "We'll stay calm, in our bubble... it's one game."

    Rashford back in the reckoning

His side's problem at the MKM Stadium on Saturday was not a new one: how to break down a low block. In the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, it's been a familiar frustration for the United faithful, who witnessed substitute Marcus Rashford don the number nine shirt in his first appearance for the club since December 2024.

Despite only coming on at half-time, no United player created more chances than Rashford's four. Only Chelsea's Morgan Rogers, with five, created more chances overall across the opening matchweek.

The Red Devils have lost their opening two games of a Premier League season just twice; in the inaugural 1992-93 season – when they drew their third match at home to Ipswich and went on to win the title – and in 2022-23 under Erik ten Hag, results which prompted the purchase of Casemiro.

Historically, it's a fixture that favours United. They recorded the competition's joint-highest win with a famous 9-0 home victory in March 1995, the start of a seven-game unbeaten streak against Sunday's opponents.

    Tractor Boys up and running

After returning to the top flight at the first attempt, last season's Championship runners-up got off to a flyer with a last-gasp win at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

It was an impressive start against a side competing in this season's Europe League, especially given the upheaval at Portman Road this summer, which saw ex-Manchester United first-team coach Kieran McKenna depart unexpectedly before Gary O'Neil took the reins.

The Blues, with the benefit of parachute payments from their 2024-25 relegation, had the third-biggest net spend of any side in the division going into the opening weekend, and O'Neil's starting line-up against Sunderland blended four of McKenna's promotion winners with seven new signings.

One of those summer arrivals, Brazilian forward Emersonn, scored on his Premier League debut. The last player to score in his first two appearances in the top flight for the Tractor Boys was Adam Tanner in January 1995.

Ipswich are looking to start a top-flight season with two wins in a row for just the fourth time in 28 attempts. The outcome of the previous three campaigns in which they recorded back-to-back early wins could barely be more stark.

The graphic shows the three previous top-flight seasons in which Ipswich Town have won their first two league games.

Should the visitors trail at half-time, they might fear the worst given United haven't lost any of their past 400 home league games when leading at half-time (W365 D35). The last team to beat them when behind at the break? Ipswich Town, with a 2-1 win in May 1984.
