A good couple of serves had put Carol Young Suh Lee in good stead there, but she loses focus and allows Katie Boulter to work her way back into the game from 40-15 down.

Great Britain's Toby Samuel spoke to Sky Sports on court after his victory: "I'm pretty tired but otherwise I'm so happy to have got the job done there. We played a great match and I'm so thankful to everyone who has supported me up to this moment and I'm hopeful it can carry on this week."

On how he stayed focused: "I mean in the first two sets, I wasn't missing any balls, I was feeling amazing and then at the start of the third I knew he'd come out stronger and I had a little of a dip. But I fought back pretty quick and I managed to close it out confidently and I'm so happy."

On preparation for the next match after playing so much tennis already through qualifying: "Just try and do exactly what I did before today. Prepare the same way but yeah, I think I probably won't play that well in the next match so I've got to be ready to fight and be a lot tougher but I'm going to do everything I can to be ready."

On the support: "I had a few of my college mates from Carolina come down and support and they sort of brought there energy and I was so grateful they were able to come down and give me that fighting energy to keep going and get the job done today."

Standing between Katie Boulter and a place in the second round is Grand Slam main-draw debutant Carol Young Suh Lee.

The 24-year-old American was awarded a wildcard after a strong hard-court swing saw her win an ITF title in Portugal, a Challenger crown at the Polish Open, and come through qualifying to reach the round of 16 at the Prague Open – her first appearance in the main draw of a WTA Tour event.

Lee sits 143rd in the WTA rankings.

British number one Katie Boulter heads into the US Open on a disappointing run of form.

Since reaching the semi-finals at Queen’s, the 30-year-old has lost five of her past six matches, including just one win from three hard-court tournaments.

Boulter, who married fellow tennis player Alex de Minaur in July, has previously reached the third round (2023) at the US Open but fell at the first hurdle in 2025. She has only won one Grand Slam singles match in 2026, reaching the second round at Roland Garros.

Boulter is up next on court five where she faces American wildcard Carol Young Suh Lee.

So...mixed results for the Brits so far with a win for Toby Samuel and defeat for Cameron Norrie. Let's see how Katie Boulter gets on now.

That very last point sort of summed up the match - just a very good solid first serve, got into a rally, nice opportunity short ball for Norrie and he just missed it. Time and time and time again it just wasn't a Cam Norrie performance.

In many ways he set the point up beautifully but it was just one of those days where you can't finish it off.

It wasn't a technical match Norrie would have been worried about, you have got to execute. Van Assche has played a lot of matches of late and he was just rock solid.

This is Toby Samuel's first main-draw win at a Grand Slam.

The 23-year-old, who began this year ranked outside the world's top 250, came from a set down in each of his three qualifying matches to get here but had no such issues today against Tomas Machac.

Waiting for him in round two is another Czech in 18th seed Jiri Lehecka, who beat Pablo Carreno Busta in four sets.

There was nothing on about five of those forehands from Van Assche in that last game but, such is Norrie's confidence, he's just missing those type of shots. The balls that are bouncing mid-court and shoulder height, his bread and butter if he was in form.
