This is the first meeting between Briton Jacob Fearnley and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Argentine 27th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry arrived in New York on a four-match losing streak and failed to win a set in each of his first-round exits at the Citi Open, Canadian Open, and Cincinnati Masters.

However, the 27-year-old showed no signs of this poor form against Vit Kopriva, brushing aside the Czech 6-3 6-4 6-0 on Sunday.

Etcheverry has only advanced beyond the second round of a major five times in 19 tournaments since making his main-draw debut in 2022.

His best performance at the US Open came in 2024 when he reached the third round.

This time he gets it. After a lengthy baseline exchange, Botic van de Zandschulp ups the tempo and Jan Choinski can't deal with the pace on a fiery forehand sent over by the Dutchman.

Just like Jan Choinski, Botic van de Zandschulp can't convert either of his first two break points.

But he will get a third one after catching the Briton off guard with a drop shot.

It's not a bad idea for Choinski to swing that serve out wide to Van de Zandschulp's forehand - there is an extreme grip change from forehand to backhand.

After saving two break points in the last game, Botic van de Zandschulp brings up two of his own - helped along by a stunning cross-court return on Jan Choinski's serve.

Dare I say, it's the serve that is the pole that holds the tent up in Van de Zandschulp's game. It's a brilliant first serve with a lot of action and pace but it can go awry.

Botic van de Zandschulp saves the second break point with a winner down the line after coming to the net and two aces help him over the line.

Botic van de Zandschulp and Jan Choinski might be close in the rankings at the moment, with just six places separating them, but the Dutchman has a lot more Grand Slam experience.

While Choinski is hoping to win just his third match at a major, Van de Zandschulp - a former quarter-finalist in New York - is looking for his 25th.

He has just saved one break point, but Choinski will get a second chance...

Jacob Fearnley is no stranger to comeback victories. At Wimbledon, he recovered from two sets down to beat Alex Michelsen in round one while in July’s Hall of Fame Open final in Newport, he trailed by a set and 5-1 before saving six championship points en route to the title.

The latter performance, coupled with the knowledge he didn’t have “a whole lot to lose” after entering the draw as a lucky loser, inspired his great escape over Landaluce, with a simple philosophy underpinning his success – “just point after point”.

“I still don’t think I’ve comprehended it but a couple of weeks ago, I was playing in the final in Newport and I was 5-1, 40-15 down and I ended up winning, so it felt like this one was possible. Just point after point,” Fearnley said after the match.

“The way I was seeing it was I don’t have a whole lot to lose. I was kind of playing on house money a little bit.

“That’s what I was telling myself to kind of ease the nerves and get on the court to try and give my best effort. Super grateful for the second chance and glad I could make good use of it.”

Medvedev is not comfortable with the variety that is coming from the other end of the court.

He is not comfortable when he's coming forward - when he's drawn forward he looks out of his depth completely so a lot of frustration for him still in set three.

Up next on court 12, British number four Jacob Fearnley faces 27th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry as he bids to reach the US Open third round for the first time.

Fearnley, in the main draw as a lucky loser following the late withdrawal of Joao Fonseca, looked down and out in his first-round meeting with Martin Landaluce, trailing 5-2 in the fourth set.

However, the 25-year-old roared back to win 10 of the next 11 games en route to a thrilling 4-6 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory.

It was a far from perfect performance from Fearnley, whose 45 winners were offset by 55 unforced errors (including 16 double faults), but he seized the initiative in the crunch moments, hitting a huge 30 winners to Landaluce’s 11 in the final two sets.

Fearnley, the world number 101, has never previously gone beyond the second round in New York but has reached round three at the Australian Open and French Open (both in 2025).

American Sebastian Gornzy is just about hanging on in his second-round match against Russian seventh seed Daniil Medvedev.

Gorzny saved multiple break points in the last game, which included a cheeky underarm serve, to keep his nose in front in the third set.

At two sets up, 2021 champion Medvedev would have been serving for the match if he had won that.

Jan Choinski is having an easier time of it on serve so far. Just the four points dropped across his opening three games.

Jan Choinski and Botic van de Zandschulp have never met on the ATP Tour or at a Grand Slam before, but they have played each other on the Challenger and Futures tour.

The Dutchman leads their head-to-head record 2-1, with their most recent meeting in 2025. That was a match to forget for Choinski, who won just one game.

The British number three threatens a comeback from 40-0 down on Van de Zandschulp's serve before gifting him the hold with an overhit forehand.

How do you even think about returning a 133mph serve?! Well, Botic van de Zandschulp managed it there - only to go long on an easier forehand shot a few hits later.

Another service game safely navigated by the British number three.

Jan Choinski and Botic van de Zandschulp aren't doing me any favours with their outfit choices today. The pair, who are both over 6ft 3in, are looking very similar in a white cap and shirt paired with dark shorts.

The Dutchman was under a bit of pressure there, but an inside-out forehand winner and a miss from Choinski see him through.

It's unfortunate that the way her game is set up, she can navigate her way through the rounds and then when she arrives at the final stages of the bigger tournaments, she just doesn't have that winning ability to get over the line in a major final.
