Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has called on the uncapped players in his squad to "rip" into today's Nations Championship game against Japan.

Farrell has included Connacht back row Sean Jansen from the start and Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Bryn Ward on the bench while resting several players before next week's meeting with the All Blacks in Auckland.

"I'm really excited about this one for all sorts of reasons," said Farrell.

"Obviously, it's always a special occasion when you give one person a debut, never mind four.

"[I'm] really looking forward to how they apply themselves to attacking the game, first and foremost, because that's the role they're able to add to the team and the performance behind all that.

"But making sure that the rest of the team are there to support them and for it to be a special day for them. So, huge congratulations to the four of them. It's business time now, they need to rip in."

For New Zealand-born Sean Jansen, a first outing in green caps a hugely impressive season. The 27-year-old scored 10 United Rugby Championship tries for Connacht and was third for tackles made with 219.

With captain Caelan Doris and a six-Test British and Irish Lion in Jack Conan above him in the pecking order, Jansen must seize his first chance to show Farrell what he can do in the Test arena just over a year out from the World Cup in Australia.

Conan - who switches to blind-side flanker - has certainly shown him the way. The 33-year-old made 19 tackles (with a 95% success rate) and 16 carries against Australia.

Bryn Ward is another new face in the back row. The 21-year-old is an explosive talent and enjoyed a breakout season with Ulster.

An unused Six Nations squad member earlier this year, the opportunity to elbow his way into the back-row picture will not be lost on the Ballynahinch man.

Ward is one of eight Ulster players in the matchday squad, while the inclusion of replacement debutant props Billy Bohan and Sam Illo takes Connacht's representation to four alongside Jansen and experienced centre Bundee Aki.

Four players are set to make their debuts as Ireland make nine changes from the opening win over Australia.

Connacht's Sean Jansen will earn his Test debut from the start at number eight, while club team-mates Billy Bohan and Sam Illo have been picked as replacement props.

Ulster back row Bryn Ward is also poised to make his international bow after being named on the bench.

Influential Munster forward Tadhg Beirne will captain Ireland from the start for the first time, with tour skipper Dan Sheehan one of several players rested for the game in Newcastle.

Forwards Tadhg Furlong, Joe McCarthy and Josh van der Flier and backs Jamison Gibson-Park, Sam Prendergast, Garry Ringrose and Hugo Keenan have also been given the week off.

Japan beat Italy 27-10 in their Nations Championship opener in Tokyo.

Former England and Australia boss Eddie Jones has retained university student fly-half Ryunosuke Ito in his line-up after the 21-year-old made his debut against Italy, with Taira Main replacing Kippei Ishida in their only change.

Jones returns after serving a four-match ban imposed by the Japan Rugby Football Football Union (JRFU) for abusing match officials during an under-23 tour of Australia earlier this year.

What's next for these two?

France will travel to Tokyo to take on Japan, who are about to face Ireland at 11:10 BST.

Australia face Italy in their third and final summer game, and both sides will be aiming to end this group of matches with a win.

It's a biggest win for France in Australia, and four wins in a row over the Wallabies.

There's nothing quite like a prop striding into space at full pelt and Taniela Tupou is clear into the French half.

His pass inside to Jospeh -Aukuso Suaalii isn't perfect and France manage to scramble back and win a penalty on their own 22-metre line.

Aaaand they've lost it.

Now here come France as Theo Attissogbe comes racing away and le Garrec hammers it downfield.

It's better from Australia as Harry Wilson brings the ball forwards and finds Tate McDermott, who is hammered in the tackle by fellow replacement scrum-half Nolann le Garrec.

The Wallabies recycle the ball and are deep in the French 22.

On that last point and before anyone mentions it, I'm also very aware that if Mbappe hits his next penalty as high as Lucu sent his then France will be in a bit of bother.
