From facing the world number 80, to taking on the world number two.

It is Estonia's Anett Kontaveit who stands in Serena Williams' way this evening.

Kontaveit is the only women's player with over 50 hard-court wins since the start of 2021 - and she has never lost to a player outside the top 100 at a major.

She won nine straight games to finish off her 6-3 6-0 win over Jaqueline Cristian at the start of her 30th Grand Slam appearance.

    The scene outside Ashe...

It's packed in the Plaza outside the main stadium with a celebratory atmosphere bubbling up nicely.

Ticket-holders are streaming in for the night session, with those who were there for the day session - and groundspass holders - still milling about.

If you haven't got a ticket for inside then watching on the big screens outside feels like the next best place to be.

Elsewhere at Flushing Meadows, Britain's Jack Draper will shortly be in action in Louis Armstrong Stadium.

He's taking on Canada's sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime as he looks to reach the third round of a major for the very first time.

The 20-year-old is making his US Open debut this year, and impressed in his opening straight-sets win over Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori.

  5. Finishing with a final US Open run?published at 23:50 BST 31 August 2022

It would be a fitting finish to Serena William's incredible career if she could put together one final Grand Slam run at the tournament where she claimed her first ever major title.

Aged just 17, the American stunned world number four Monica Seles in the quarter-finals, second-ranked Lindsey Davenport in the last four, and then world number one Martina Hingis in the final to become the first African-American woman in the Open Era to win a singles major in 1999.

Twenty-three years on from that maiden triumph, with 23 Grand Slam titles to her name, she is set to retire once this US Open campaign comes to an end.

Serena Williams decided it was not quite yet time to say goodbye in New York on Monday.

The six-time champion was able to extend her US Open farewell by coming through her opening match against Danka Kovinic in front of a packed crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

But just how long can she make her final tournament last?

Tonight, she meets world number two Anett Kontaveit.

That's all from us for now. We'll be back a little later on for Serena time.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, playing in her final US Open before she "evolves away" from tennis, takes on second seed Anett Kontaveit at midnight.

    We'll see you then.

A tough loss and a big missed opportunity for Harriet Dart.

    Galfi 6-4 6-0 Dart

Dalma Galfi is through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

An utterly dominant performance from the Hungarian, but a very hard day at the office for Harriet Dart.

Galfi wraps up proceedings on her second match point as Dart shoots a forehand a touch long.

I think Dart wants to be as far away from court 12 as is humanly possible right now.

Impressive composure from Dalma Galfi. She's not doing too much. She's just taking care of her business and playing as clinical tennis as she possibly can.

  14. Galfi breaks againpublished at 21:03 BST 31 August 2022

    *Galfi 6-4 5-0 Dart

Breakaway train indeed. It's about to reach its destination.

Dalma Galfi gets a third break in this set - on her second break point - and will serve for the match and a place in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Harriet Dart is slumped in her chair at the change of ends, her head in her towel.

As things are racing for Harriet Dart, the scoreline is ticking by very quickly. There's not a whole lot of rhythm she's getting. There's nothing she can do to stop this breakaway train.

    Galfi 6-4 4-0 Dart*

Dalma Galfi is in cruise control. She holds to 15 to win a fifth game on the trot and the finish line is arguably in sight.

Or can Harriet Dart dig deep and find some of the form that saw her stun Daria Kasatkina in the previous round?

Unfortunately Harriet Dart wiped away some tears facing the back of the court, then she gathered herself.

I can't imagine how lonely it must feel when things aren't going your way.

  18. Galfi breaks againpublished at 20:57 BST 31 August 2022

    *Galfi 6-4 3-0 Dart

A nice and easy love hold for Galfi to back up that break of serve, and then she breaks again!

Harriet Dart has her head down. At 30-0 down in that service game, she took a moment to herself at the back of the court and looked to be a bit upset, but then took the next point. But Galfi swiftly moves to break and a place in the third round is on the horizon.

  19. Dart 'overpowered'published at 20:52 BST 31 August 2022

    *Galfi 6-4 1-0 Dart

    Courtney Nguyen

A tough break for Harriet Dart. She fought well trying to hold off numerous break-point chances. She's overpowered from the baseline.

  20. Galfi breakspublished at 20:51 BST 31 August 2022

    *Galfi 6-4 1-0 Dart

Just as she did in the opening game of the first set, Dalma Galfi has caused problems for Harriet Dart in the opener of this set.

Dart is forced to save three break points but double-faults on the fourth and hands the break to Galfi.
