If you have a player like Ryan O'Donoghue inside your 21, you have to lock horns, stop his run and make him feel like he is stuck in the mud.

However, he had so much space in the first 20 minutes.

    Louth 0-11 Mayo 2-9

Conroy almost makes an instant impact.

A little bit of fortune for Mayo's second goal but fortune favoured Darragh Beirne whose instinct was to follow in when his initial shot was blocked and he was rewarded with the goal.

That Louth free just prior to the break: should thy just have taken the point and got in a goal down? Going for two brings its merits, but just to answer back to the goal may have been wise.

Either way, the second half is nicely set up.

Louth are close at half-time, yet they have wasted a lot with shots dropping short and turnovers.

Mayo have done really well at attacking Louth on the flanks.

  17. Late Mayo goal stuns Louth heading into the breakpublished at 18:46 BST 11 July

    HT: Louth 0-11 Mayo 2-9

Louth responded well throughout an entertaining first half, with momentum swinging both ways before Darragh Beirne's late score handed Mayo a valuable cushion.

But after Wicklow's remarkable 12-point comeback in the Tailteann Cup final earlier today, a four-point deficit is unlikely to worry the Wee County too much with another 35 minutes still to go.

All to play for in Croke Park.

  18. Half-timepublished at 18:44 BST 11 July

    Louth 0-11 Mayo 2-9

Mayo head into the interval with a four-point advantage after a strong finish to the opening half.

  19. Postpublished at 18:42 BST 11 July

    Louth 0-11 Mayo 2-9

  20. Goal - Darragh Beirne (Mayo)published at 18:40 BST 11 July

    Louth 0-11 Mayo 2-9

Mayo strike again! Sam Callinan reacts quickest after the ball drops in the square and slips a clever pass to Darragh Beirne, who makes no mistake from close range.

Louth are caught out defensively, and it's a huge score with just two minutes of normal time remaining in the first half.
