The 13th hole is a beauty, hugging the coastline and looking out towards Fidra Island, which is rumoured to have been the inspiration for the shape of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Fairway. Fairway. Fairway.

All tee shots landing in between the same swell of the short stuff of the stunning 13th.

Roughly 145-ish yards left in for the trio.

Bob MacIntyre has somehow found his ball in the thick bushes on the left, and he gets the driver out to measure the longest distance possible for a penalty drop.

Scottie Scheffler walks off his ball, which is ahead of Bob's, leaving the Scot to go first.

He takes his time figuring out if he's even got a route to the green from his lie and wow, does he. He find the green and it feeds down to the hole, pulling up 13ft short. What a break - can he save par?

Ludvig Aberg dinks it towards the hole, but it stops about four feet short. Not the easiest par save next but he manages.

A great chance for Martin Couvra to find his second birdie of the morning, but his putt won't break, and he remains one under after a tap-in for three.

Back to level par for Collin Morikawa, who slides in his birdie attempt.

One of the Renaissance Club's signature holes now, the 13th. Gorgeous looks out over the shoreline to the left - so just keep your ball in play. No reason to go left.

Scottie Scheffler and Adam Scott heed the warnings and find the fairway. Bob MacIntyre, though, sends it way left. He's not happy with himself as soon as it leaves the clubface.

A provisional ball is needed off the tee.

Decent stuff off the tee from all three on the 204-yard twelfth.

Aberg is slightly short, but he's avoided any trouble. The other two are on the green and staring down a birdie.

Outside of The Players Championship, this is just about the strongest non-major field you'll find in golf, so it's only fitting that the world's best are tested on a proper links course.

A cursory glance down the tee sheet and the eye darts all over the place as superstar follows superstar.

Career grand slam winner Rory McIlroy is out with Viktor Hovland, and Xander Schauffele for a 13:43 start. Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa are out alongside European youngster Martin Couvra shortly.

US Open champion JJ Spaun is out with Tommy Fleetwood and Scotland's Connor Syme in the afternoon.

All second shots find their way down to the green, but none of the trio can find a birdie.

It's as you were walking to the par-three 12th for another of the early marquee groups.

Adam Scott watches his birdie putt somehow stay out of the hole. He's he looks at birdies on every hole so far.

Next up is Bob MacIntyre, who skirts the edge of the cup and leaves a tester for par. Which he makes.

Another uphill putt for Scottie Scheffler and it pulls up an inch - if even that - short.

As Martin said, American Maverick McNealy is currently four under through six, leading 2019's US Open champion Gary Woodland, who is three under, also through six.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Padraig Harrington also join Woodland in joint second.

Scotland's Callum Hill us currently T-5 on two under.

Maverick McNealy - what a name - is now the outright leader after a birdie on 15.

The American is four under through six. Stunning start.

The 204-yard par-three 12th is next. A bit of indecision from Scottish Scheffler over what club to take with the exposed left side of the hole causing confusion.

Caddie Ted Scott is a supremely experienced operator, though. Two club changes later, and his tee shot lands roughly 15ft to the right of the pin. Sensational.

Bob MacIntyre is a little longer on the left-hand side, a more-than-decent shot.

Adam Scott up next with one of the game's best swings to watch. He's 5ft behind Scheffler.

Europe's breakout star of the 2023 Ryder Cup, Ludvig Aberg, smashes his tee shot down the middle.

Collin Morikawa and Martin Couvra do likewise. They're all down there around 320 from the tee.

Easy as that, eh?

A slow, uphill putt for Scottie Scheffler doesn't break enough as he hoped, leaving him an easy look at par.

A long, swerving one for Adam Scott races past the pin, a daunting par attempt soon follows.

Solid attempt at a birdie for Bob MacIntyre, but it breaks too late.

Pars all around here.

Adam Scott's second comes off a flier lie slightly and sails low towards the pin. It catches the back of the green and just about holds it, mind you.

From the middle of the fairway, Bob MacIntyre flicks it in pin high, and Scottie Scheffler joins him on the green too.

Young Martin Couvra shows them how it's done, birdieing his first hole.

Ludvig Aberg's birdie attempt runs round the cup but won't drop before Colin Morikawa similarly slides a par putt past by an inch or so.

Not the hole you want to be dropping shots on early doors.

Another wayward teeshot from Adam Scott, a rather uncharacteristic start from the man who was in contention for the US Open recently. It isn't in too much trouble, though, and given where the hole's cut, he's left himself an attractive second shot in.

Scottish Scheffler and Bob MacIntyre avoid any trouble and have 200 and 175 yards in, respectively.

This group is off to a flier with a trio of birdies at their opening hole, the par-five 10th.

Justin Thomas tore round here with a 62 on day one last year.

Martin Couvra's tee shot finds the first cut then a decent second leaves him short-sided down the right-hand side. A tricky third coming up.

Collin Morikawa, in a similar position, tops his fairway wood, and it trundles well short of the green. Always a pleasure to see the pros hit a shot you'd be capable of...

Swede Ludvig Aberg finds the left-hand side of the green. Similar landing spot to Bob's second a moment ago.

It's not just Bob who will be enjoying some home comforts this week.

Callum Hill is currently one under through one, Richie Ramsay is even through three.

Ewen Ferguson, Connor Syme, and Grant Forrest are out in the afternoon wave.
