It is not only Ollie Watkins who is being targeted by Al-Hilal. His England team-mate Harry Kane is also on the Saudi club's radar.

The Mirror, external claims the Saudi Pro League side are plotting a sensational move for the Bayern Munich forward, who has less than 12 months remaining on his current deal with the German champions.

The report adds that Kane, who joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, is one of several targets for Al-Hilal this year, along with Watkins and Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen.

It is said the Saudi Pro League side would be willing to offer Kane a salary of £1.2 million per week.

We began today's live coverage with reports of Aston Villa potentially having to fend off interest from Al-Hilal for striker Ollie Watkins.

Since then, Unai Emery's side have strengthened their own squad with two new signings in quick succession.

Al-Hilal, meanwhile, continue to make headlines, with the Saudi Pro League side also reportedly eyeing a move for England captain Harry Kane.

That is because Aston Villa have also agreed a deal sign West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The DR Congo right-back will join on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

Wan-Bissaka has been given permission to travel for a medical in the Midlands but the exact terms are not known, with the Hammers having previously asked interested clubs to pay a £25m fee.

The 28-year-old has missed Championship club West Ham's first two matches of the season during negotiations.

Two announcements in a day, but Aston Villa's recruitment team may not be putting their feet up just yet during this transfer window.

The arrival of Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid sees Aston Villa move quickly to replace Lucas Digne.

The France international left Villa Park earlier this month after four years to rejoin Paris St-Germain in a deal worth around £8.5 million.

However, Villa have wasted little time in bringing in his successor, with Ruggeri arriving after just one season in the Spanish capital.

The 24-year-old joined Atletico from Atalanta last summer and went on to make 47 appearances in all competitions as Diego Simeone's side finished fourth in La Liga and lost the Copa del Rey final on penalties to Real Sociedad.

During his time with Atalanta, Ruggeri was part of the squad that won the Europa League in 2024.

Villa had been keen to refresh their options at left-back this summer and were looking to add greater physicality in the position. Villa also held an interest in AC Milan's Pervis Estupinan, who Unai Emery previously managed at Villarreal.

Ruggeri represented Italy at every youth level and received his first senior call-up in March 2025, although he is still awaiting his international debut.

Dennis Rudel conjures up an intriguing image of Aston Villa's new goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

"We played in Anderlecht and after the game we went out to the bus and there was a fight with hooligans," he says.

"The head coach called for Zion: 'Come here, get out of the bus and clear the situation.'

"It was a joke but you have a picture of Asterix and Obelix and everything is flying away. You have never seen a goalkeeper or a player like that."

The comparison with Asterix, the cartoon character who gains immense strength after taking a magic potion, is telling, and Rudel believes Villa have signed a unique player.

"I saw his power immediately. To show your strength in the game you have to let the tiger out on the pitch, let the beast out. He is so powerful, I have never seen a goalkeeper like it," said Rudel, who worked with Suzuki when he was on loan at Sint-Truiden in 2023-24.

"He has such big hands and is powerful - when he can reach the ball it will be 90-95% a save, maybe other keepers touch the ball but it goes in. With him it is something really special.

"After the first two weeks of working with him I said to him you don't need your apartment, you live in the gym."

Zion Suzuki's former coach at Sint-Truiden in Belgium, Dennis Rudel, praises the goalkeeper's distribution, both his arms and feet, and believes his former player can become one of the world's best.

"It's possible because if he stays healthy and with his physical strength there is no one better in the world, in terms of dynamic, jumping power, throws, kicking the ball," the former Union Berlin coach told BBC Sport.

"When I watched him at the World Cup, his biggest strength is he is mentally clear - the focus on the game or the training sessions is so good. He is always prepared, really disciplined.

"When I see how he always adapts so quickly over the last four years, I'm convinced he can play at that [Premier League] level.

"There are big footsteps from Martinez [to follow], you get measured and compared to Martinez. It would be the same at Bayern Munich with the new Manuel Neuer - Jonas Urbig who is starting to replace him - you get compared to the former player.

"He's aiming to show he can be one of the best. He was immediately one of the top four or five goalkeepers in Serie A.

"As a person and a player, he is a role model and how you should behave. I don't see any weakness in him."

Villa now must find a route out for Martinez, or leave an expensive asset out of the team.

The Premier League's transfer window closes on 1 September but Martinez has had previous interest from Saudi Arabia, where the window is open until 12 October. The deadline in Turkey is 4 September.

This, of course, is not the first time Martinez has been close to leaving Villa, after interest from Manchester United last summer.

Ruben Amorim wanted Martinez but was overruled by the United hierarchy who opted to spend more money on their forward options - including £62.5m on Matheus Cunha and £65m on Bryan Mbeumo - feeling it was a better long-term investment.

Aston Villa's signing of Zion Suzuki comes at a time when Emi Martinez's future at the club is increasingly in doubt.

Japan international Suzuki has been one of Villa's top targets and the 23-year-old made 59 appearances for Parma after joining from J.League side Urawa Red Diamonds in 2024.

Director of football operations Damian Vidagany had previously confirmed Martinez would stay at Villa Park but he is now more likely to depart before the transfer deadline.

The Argentina international, who was a World Cup winner in 2022 and runner-up to Spain this year, joined Villa from Arsenal for £17m in 2020.

Aston Villa fans are being spoiled this morning!

The club have now announced a second signing in the space of five minutes, with Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki the latest to join.

Suzuki, who joins from Parma, was born in America but qualifies for Japan through his mother and played all four of the country's matches at the World Cup this summer.

Aston Villa have confirmed signing of Atletico Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri for a fee of about £17m.

The 24-year-old left-back moves to Villa Park after just a season at Atletico and will replace Lucas Digne, who recently completed an £8.5m return to Paris St-Germain.

Meanwhile, West Ham have just confirmed the signing of Joel Piroe from Leeds United.

The 27-year-old forward joins the Championship side on an initial season-long loan, with an obligation to make the deal permanent in 2027.

Piroe, who has scored 73 goals in the Championship during spells with Leeds United and Swansea City, said: "I see West Ham as a Club that really wants to be in the Premier League, and I think should be in the Premier League.

"With my experience, I think I can help the Club a lot to achieve what they want to achieve, and I think it’s a good opportunity for me to show what I’ve learnt and how I’ve grown as a football player over the years."

Piroe finished the 2024/25 season as the Championship's top scorer, helping Leeds United earn promotion to the Premier League.

A reminder that Manchester United had reportedly looked to sign Ollie Watkins form Aston Villa last summer. But they ultimately ended up signing Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

Villa also rejected an approach from Arsenal for the England striker in January 2025.

When Aston Villa thrashed Freiburg to win the Europa League in May, their supporters could have been forgiven for thinking it would be a summer to remember.

Fast forward almost three months, however, and Unai Emery's side could look very different when they line up to face Brighton in their opening Premier League fixture of the season on Sunday.

Villa will be without two of their three scorers in the Europa League final, Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, after they joined Manchester United and Chelsea respectively this summer.

Meanwhile, there is speculation that Al-Hilal could make a fourth offer for forward Ollie Watkins, who has scored 108 goals in 278 appearances since signing from Brentford in 2020.

In addition to a string of high-profile departures, which could also include goalkeeper Emi Martinez before the end of the transfer window, Villa's net spend of around £110 million is currently the lowest in the Premier League.

It has certainly been a summer to remember at Villa Park, but is it for the right reasons?
