Viva Bavaria: Really enjoy this new format of the Champions League, far better than the previous group stage. And far, far better than the old style European Cup where it was a rotation of the same old teams who'd park the bus in the away leg to get a 0-0 to try to win at home. Better football and more goals now.

If Paris St-Germain do the three-peat, it would be an incredible achievement. I think two in a row is already special - three in a row is impossible unless you've got Cristiano Ronaldo in your team, which they don't.
I don't believe fully in the Jose Mourinho-Real Madrid project, so I would go for Bayern Munich and Arsenal to reach the final.
They are probably the teams, other than PSG, who have deserved to be there the most in the past two seasons. To win it, I'll go for Arsenal.
They have the best defence in Europe by far and that's what wins you titles.

Mike B: The Champions League should be a straight knockout competition with NO seeding.
Real Madrid v Inter Milan (20:00 BST)
Over at the Bernabeu a little later, it's Trent Alexander-Arnold against former Liverpool team-mate Curtis Jones, when record 15-time winners Real Madrid host champions of Italy Inter Milan.

Experienced Germany midfielder Goretzka, a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich in 2020, was signed last month but has yet to make an appearance for his new club.
Posting on Instagram, Goretzka wrote: "Dear Villans.
"First of all, thank you for the incredible welcome. After my first few days at this club, the feeling that I'm exactly where I'm meant to be has grown stronger with each passing day.
"Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. It's frustrating, but I need this short break now to come back at full strength.
"I'll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully and I'll be back ready to fight and give everything for you and for Villa. Can't wait to see you on the pitch soon"

On Thursday, Manchester United play their first game in Europe's most prestigious competition since December 2023.
On Wednesday, Arsenal are in Italy to face Napoli, six-time winners Liverpool host Atletico Madrid, while Paris St-Germain - back-to-back winners - launch their campaign.

Kylian Mbappe moved joint-fifth in the list of all-time Champions League and European Cup goalscorers as Real Madrid overcame Inter Milan.
The France captain, 27, opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho's side with a clinical 14th-minute finish from just inside the box - his 71st goal in 99 appearances in the competition.
Only Karim Benzema (90), Robert Lewandowski (109), Lionel Messi (129) and Cristiano Ronaldo (140) have scored more.
Three-time Real Madrid Champions League winner Raul scored 71 times in 142 appearances.
It was Real's first attempt on target and their next one brought a second goal in the 23rd minute after a horrible mistake by Inter's Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martinez.
Martinez lost possession after a back pass by Benjamin Pavard, with captain Federico Valverde dispossessing the keeper before tapping over the line.
Martinez made amends at the end of the first half with a double save to keep out Mbappe and Jude Bellingham before the post came to Inter's rescue.
Italian champions Inter had started well with Thibaut Courtois, making his 100th Champions League appearance, keeping out attempts by Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez.
Inter also hit the top of the bar through former Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, while they sent on John Stones - a Champions League winner with Manchester City in 2023.
In a game full of chances, Bellingham missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 for the record 15-time European champions before Carlos Augusto swept home in the 77th-minute to set up a grandstand finish between Mourinho's current and former clubs.
Despite the win, Real's fans were unhappy with their team's performance and made their feelings known during the game.

Real Madrid have won all four of their UEFA Champions League games against Internazionale this century – indeed, they are the opponent that Inter have faced the most times in major European competition this century without managing a victory.
Internazionale have lost and failed to score in each of their last three UEFA Champions League games against Real Madrid. Only against Barcelona, between 2003 and 2009, have they failed to score in four consecutive European Cup/Champions League games against an opponent.
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho will come up against his former team Internazionale, who he won the UEFA Champions League with in 2010 at the Bernabéu (2-0 v Bayern Munich). Current Inter manager Christian Chivu was also in Mourinho’s starting XI for that 2010 triumph.
Internazionale lost five of their last six UEFA Champions League matches in 2025-26 (W1), as many defeats as across their prior 39 games in the competition combined (W25 D9).
José Mourinho returned to Real Madrid as manager this summer – he has managed the fifth-most matches in UEFA Champions League history since 1992-93 (160), with 36 of those with Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning 24 (66.7%). Only Carlo Ancelotti (68.8%) has a better win ratio with the club, among managers with 10+ UCL games in charge of them.
Under the returning José Mourinho, Real Madrid have scored in 97% of their UEFA Champions League matches (35/36). This is the highest percentage by any team with 20+ matches under a specific manager in the competition.
If Kylian Mbappé scores in this game, he will equal Raúl (71) as the joint-fifth top goalscorer in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history. The Frenchman has netted 70 goals in 98 games in the Champions League to date, including 22 in 25 games for current club Real Madrid.
In the last five seasons, the two players involved in the most UEFA Champions League goals are current Real Madrid duo Kylian Mbappé (43 goals, 9 assists) and Vinícius Júnior (30 goals, 22 assists), with the latter’s 22 assists eight more than any other player since 2021-22.
Of midfielders with 300+ minutes played in the UEFA Champions League in 2025-26, Rodri (13.2) was the only player who averaged more line-breaking passes in the final third per 90 than Internazionale’s Hakan Çalhanoglu (9.3).
Internazionale now have three different English players in their ranks: John Stones, Djed Spence and Curtis Jones. Only once previously has a non-British team started a UEFA Champions League game with three Englishmen in their starting XI, with that also being by a Milan side (Tomori, Loftus-Cheek and Abraham for rivals Milan in October 2024, v Bayer Leverkusen).
