Crystal Palace 0-1 Man City
Another big chance for Palace as Tyrick Mitchell cuts it back for Eddie Nketiah but he drags his shot agonisingly wide.
Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both scored twice as Manchester City made it two Premier League wins out of two under Enzo Maresca - and left Crystal Palace without a point after back-to-back defeats.
Haaland, last season's leading scorer with 27 league goals, opened his account for the season to set City on their way with a guided header after being picked out by Antoine Semenyo in the 17th minute.
In an entertaining game, Cherki doubled the lead with a lovely 54th-minute finish after dancing past a couple of challenges, before Palace pulled one back two minutes later when Gianluigi Donnarumma became the first City keeper to score a Premier League own goal since Costel Pantilimon in December 2013.
Yeremy Pino's free-kick over the City wall struck the bar before hitting the back of Donnarumma and then going in off the post.
However, Cherki's deflected 59th-minute finish off Chris Richards made it 3-1, before Haaland rounded off a fine performance with City's fourth following good work by Phil Foden.
Palace had started on the front foot with three attempts in the opening five minutes, the best of which saw Italy stopper Donnarumma keep out Eddie Nketiah's shot following a razor-sharp pass by Adam Wharton.
But City quickly took control and after Elliot Anderson had been denied by Dean Henderson, Haaland pounced before Foden missed a golden chance to double the lead when he fired over from 10 yards.
In a free-flowing game watched by England manager Thomas Tuchel, Tyrick Mitchell should have equalised in the 34th minute but put his header wide after a cross from the impressive Wharton, while Nketiah wasted another chance after half-time before Cherki made it 2-0.
Palace were without their star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, whose future remains uncertain amid interest from other clubs before next Tuesday's transfer deadline.
According to reports,, external however, the scorer of 50 goals in 163 appearances for the Eagles suffered a hamstring injury in training and is expected to be out for about four weeks, throwing into doubt a move away from Palace this summer.
His place was taken by Jorgen Strand Larsen, yet it was his Norway team-mate who helped decide the game - with Haaland having now scored an astonishing 10 goals in six Premier League games against Palace.
Crystal Palace 1-4 Manchester City: Palace lost hope at 3-1, says Sage
Palace, who gave a debut off the bench to new signing Axel Disasi, are now without a win in nine Premier League games stretching back to last season.
In the 2-0 defeat by Everton on the opening weekend they hit the woodwork twice before fading in the second half.
Against City they threatened in spells but even after pulling one back they conceded soon after.
This was Pierre Sage's first taste of the night-game atmosphere at Selhurst Park and while the new Palace boss saw moments of positivity from his side, the Frenchman knows the next few days could be critical to Palace's season as Tuesday's 23:00 BST transfer deadline nears.
Will they fight off late advances for Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, who is also injured but is on Liverpool's radar?
Meanwhile, right-back Daniel Munoz started on the bench on the day he was subject of a reported £22m bid from Nottingham Forest, managed by ex-Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
Losing to big-spending Manchester City is no disgrace and there will be no alarm bells sounding with the season still so young, particularly as Palace are still adjusting to life after Glasner, who inspired their memorable FA Cup and Conference League triumphs.
But the Eagles will be anxious to end their losing start as quickly as possible, with their next three games before the first international break of the season against Fulham (away), Ipswich (home) and Leeds (away).
Crystal Palace 1-4 Manchester City: Cherki controlled Wharton, says Maresca
Maresca had warned on the eve of this game: "Palace away is always complicated."
Apart from one or two moments, this was pretty straightforward for City once they went 2-0 ahead, with Foden looking the part and ending the night with two assists.
There is a real sense of transition under new boss Maresca following the exits of huge personalities in the shape of Pep Guardiola, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and John Stones.
But so far so good for City, who sent on their new expensive teenage signing Ayyoub Bouaddi in the closing stages.
Will there be more arrivals before the transfer deadline?
City are interested in Everton winger Illiman Ndiaye, 26, while there are reports that Brazilian winger Allan, 22, is also on his way to Etihad Stadium from Palmeiras in a deal worth up to £34.2m.
There is also the possibility of Enzo Fernandez linking up with his former Chelsea boss Maresca in the next few days, while Jack Grealish looks to be on his way out after being left out of this game.
With Haaland up and running and Cherki registering two goals and two assists in his opening two games of the campaign, City look menacing, with newly promoted Coventry City up next at home on 5 September (15:00 BST).
Remarkably, Haaland now has 24 Premier League goals in just 16 appearances in the month of August. Only former Manchester United striker Andy Cole (25 in 44) has scored more in the same month.

Erling Haaland scored two goals in a Premier League game for the first time since December 2025

Crystal Palace have won just two of their last 22 Premier League games against Man City (D5 L15), and are winless in nine against them since a 2-0 away win in October 2021.
Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League away games against Crystal Palace (W8 D3) since a 2-1 loss in April 2015 under Manuel Pellegrini.
Crystal Palace are without a win in their last eight Premier League games (D3 L5); since returning to the top-flight in 2013-14, only in February last season (9), March 2023 (12), and April 2016 (14) have the Eagles endured longer winless runs in the competition.
Manchester City have only won four of their 10 Premier League away matches in 2026 (D5 L1), while Enzo Maresca failed to win any of his final three away league games with Chelsea (D2 L1).
Only Brighton and Hove Albion (3.54) recorded a higher open play xG on MD1 of the 2026-27 Premier League season than Crystal Palace (1.96), with the Eagles the biggest underachievers last season (-12.9) between goals from open play (22 – ex. own goals) and open play xG (34.9).
After winning seven of his first 12 Premier League games against sides starting with a back three/five (D2 L3), Enzo Maresca has since won just four of his last 10 (D2 L4), suffering defeats in three of his previous five such games.
On MD1 of this season’s Premier League, only Brighton and Hove Albion recorded more high turnovers (19) and had a lower PPDA (4.9) than Crystal Palace managed against Everton (15 high turnovers, 6.9 PPDA).
Only two players recorded more line-breaking passes in the final third on MD1 of the 2026-27 Premier League season than Adam Wharton (13), as well as winning possession eight times, the joint-third most of any player.
Man City striker Erling Haaland has scored in all five of his Premier League games against Crystal Palace, netting eight goals in total. It’s the best 100% scoring record a player has against an opponent in the competition, while the only players to net in each of their first six against a side are Raheem Sterling and Mohamed Salah (both vs Bournemouth).
12 of Rayan Cherki’s Premier League assists have come from open play, including for Josko Gvardiol’s winner on MD1 against Bournemouth – since the start of last season the Frenchman leads the league for open play assists, while he’s second for open play expected assists (8.2) and through balls (30).
