David Moyes began his managerial career at Preston, spending four years there, helping the club out of the third tier in 1999-2000.

He nearly took them into the Premier League, only to lose in the play-offs in 2000-01, 3-0 in the final to Bolton.

Moyes began his first spell at Everton in 2002 and this is his first game back at Deepdale as an opposition manager since his time in charge there.

Newcastle have signed Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzales. Podcaster Amos Murphy has been giving the City perspective on the deal, telling Newcastle fans what they can expect from the Spaniard: “When you look at what he can offer, he’s 24-years-old, I think he turns 25 during the current season, if it goes well and if I’m to predict, I think it will go well for him because he will get those extra minutes and he will start to look a little bit more settled, that could be a great signing for the next five years.”

Everton simply must sign a recognised right-back before the window shuts. It has been a glaring problem for more than a year.

It is a weakness recognised by everyone at the club but either a prime target cannot be agreed upon or is out of reach.

Talented midfielder Merlin Rohl took on the job for the opening game against Crystal Palace, while Jake O'Brien and James Garner have also been pressed into service.

Time to finally make a decision and get one in. Maybe David Moyes will also look at adding another striker with questions still hanging over Beto and Thierno Barry.

The Championship side in tonight's all-London tie have enjoyed a perfect start to their season so far.

They have won both of their games in the league, beating relegated West Ham 2-1 at the weekend and Derby 2-1 in the match before, and got to this stage of the League Cup following a 3-1 win at League Two side Cheltenham in the first round.

They have opted not to start Tyreece Campbell - who scored in each of those three matches - tonight.

Preston North End

Preston are down in 21st in the Championship after losses in both of their opening matches - 2-1 at Bolton and 3-1 at home to Wolves.

The Lilywhites did progress from their first round Carabao Cup tie, winning 4-3 on penalties after it had been 1-1 after 90 minutes.

That match was played at Everton's former home Goodison Park as Preston's Deepdale ground was having the new pitch installed.

But they returned home on Saturday, with boss Paul Heckingbottom saying the club had caught up with the other Championship teams.

"Everything has progressed in football and we were the only team in the league not to have some sort of artificial stitch-pitch and its job is just to hold firmer when the weather turns and, instead of it ripping up and becoming bobbly it just stays flatter," Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It's not about having grass on the pitch, it's about it being flat and level and holding firm and we've not had that."

West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss James Morrison began his playing career in the north east at Middlesbrough and was looking forward to tonight's clash against Newcastle at St James' Park.

"I want us to go and be competitive in the game. When it first came out I was excited to go up against a top side like Newcastle," Morrison said.

"I'll be respecting the competition, the opposition and the travelling fans - hopefully we can put a performance on for them.

"The stadium is among the best in the league. They will probably sell out - I think last year, for a tie with Bradford, they had 51,000. It will be great to be in a passionate stadium and I think the players and fans are excited to be in that."

The new season didn't begin as Spurs fans would have wanted after enduring a tricky campaign last year.

They were defeated 3-0 at Brentford on Saturday in their Premier League opener, leading Roberto De Zerbi to say that his team - who narrowly avoided relegation last year - need to "change the mood".

Despite strong recruitment in the summer, it was a poor start. Can their season get on track against second-tier opposition tonight?

Right, we have two draws tonight and the first one - conducted by Jamie Redknapp and Jermaine Beckford has just been made.

It was to see if the eight teams in the Champions League and Europa Leagues would be at home or away in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Crystal Palace, Manchester United, Manchester City, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Liverpool were all given home ties, with Arsenal and Aston Villa both playing away.

The rest of the draw will be held after the Preston v Everton match so we won't know who those sides are playing, as well as the other eight ties, until later on.

The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place live on Sky Sports before and after the Preston v Everton match tonight.

We will be down to 32 teams, and the matches will be held over two midweeks - the weeks beginning 7 and 14 September. This is where it gets confusing as Champions League games are also on the first week, with Europa League matches on the second one.

Therefore, the five teams in the Champions League - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United - and the three in the Europa League - Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Sunderland - will all be kept apart and not play each other.

Brighton, in Conference League qualifying, also enter the Carabao Cup at the third-round stage but as there are no Conference League matches that clash, they will be in the regular part of the draw, and might face one of those Champions / Europa League teams.

The first draw will see if the eight sides in the Champions or Europa League are home or away and this will take place before the Preston-Everton match.

The rest of the draw will happen after the tie has finished. The first eight teams to be drawn will face one of the Champions / Europa League sides. Once those eight ties are sorted out, the final eight round-three matches will be drawn as normal.

In round two the Carabao Cup was split into northern and southern sections, but those restrictions are lifted for round three.

The nine Premier League teams that are playing in Europe - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brighton, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sunderland - all enter the Carabao Cup in the third round.

They will be joined by the 17 winners from Tuesday, the four from tonight and the last two from Thursday.

A sell-out crowd is expected at St James' Park tonight for Newcastle United's Carabao Cup second-round tie against West Brom.

Should that necessarily come as a surprise?

"Nobody of a Newcastle United persuasion needs reminding we won this trophy at Wembley in 2025," injured captain Dan Burn writes in his programme notes.

"The Carabao Cup will always be a competition that stays close to us as Newcastle fans because of that day.

"But we're in an exciting position now where we can create new history. It feels like we're in a new cycle now as a club and anything is possible."

After Everton's CEO Angus Kinnear told me exclusively last week that the club's owners called last season "a failure" eyebrows were raised when David Moyes angrily insisted staying up in the Premier League is the more important aim.

Ahead of tonight's League Cup game at Preston David Moyes was asked how important the cups are to him this season and his answer has left fans irritated.

"Of course we all want to win the cups," he explained. "Yes the cups are hugely important, would it be more important than staying in the Premier League? I'll ask you the question: Is winning a cup more important than staying in the Premier League? What would your answer be?"

Last season there was frustration at the third round exits in both the League Cup and FA Cup with tactics fiercely criticised.

Evertonians deserve a cup run. For too long they have dragged their team over the line time and time again. They were the glue holding an increasingly fractured club together as PSR charges hit, points were deducted, favourite players sold and the club's hierarchy disappeared.

The manager talking down the chance to hunt for a trophy for the first time in 31 years isn't the team talk supporters want to hear in the build up to a potential cup run.
