Summary

Have your say on England men this summer

  1. 6 runs

    Well...

Kamindu Mendis whacks Rehan Ahmed's first ball for six.

Rehan Ahmed is coming on after drinks. He bowled better than his figures suggested on Tuesday but needs to lay down a marker in Adil Rashid's absence.

Jamie Overton does have one of the quickest bouncers going around and Kusal Mendi is doing the right thing.

At Headingley you want to hit the ball up. He is just not able to get the timing, maybe he is trying to hit it too hard.

  4. drinks break

    Drinks - SL 82-1published at 17 overs

Another short ball from Jamie Overton and another Kusal Mendis top edge!

After getting away with the one in the previous over via the dropped catch, this lands in an open space between wicketkeeper and fine leg.

That'll be drinks. Sri Lanka have made a decent start without really hurting England as of yet.

  5. SL 78-1published at 16 overs

Kusal Mendis gets Will Jacks away this time as England's off-spinner drifts too far down the leg side. It's a relatively straightforward sweep for four down to fine leg.

Jacks looks annoyed. He recorded the second-best figures in England's ODI history at Durham.

In both games so far, and I know today has just started, but the way Sri Lanka have played Will Jacks, they have not put him under any pressure.

  7. SL 71-1published at 15 overs

    Kamindu 26, Kusal 19

That should have been a wicket in Jamie Overton's first over. Three from it. He thought there was an edge on another delivery too but the technology shows it was the right call not to review.

There's never an easy catch in international cricket, but it went straight up and Gus Atkinson didn't have to move.

A horrible drop from Gus Atkinson.

  10. dropped catch

I have to say, this is one of the worst drops you'll see. Kusal Mendis top-edges a pull to fine leg and it does go high.

But Gus Atkinson is right underneath it. Somehow he spills it.

Kusal Mendis likes to go from down to up and to get underneath the ball and hit it in the air.

  12. 6 runs

    SL 63-1published at 13 overs

I saw Kusal Mendis whack England around Bengaluru during the dismal 2023 World Cup. I feel like I watched him play a lot of these shots where he squats low, uses the pace and lifts the ball over the leg side.

With Josh Tongue pace, this flies all of the way for six and is dropped in the crowd.

I'll reiterate, this is a good pitch. Sri Lanka will need plenty of runs.

The moment Kusal Mendis settles down, and he gets a few runs, his hands will work a lot better.

If you're not careful and you're not proactive, Sri Lanka will get a good score on the board.

  14. SL 55-1published at 12 overs

Encouragement of Will Jacks - and Sachin Colombage watching on - as Kusal Mendis miscues short of Joe Root diving forward at extra cover. There is something for the spinner.

On Tuesday, Jacks spoke about his emergency appendix operation last month. He was in Edinburgh for his mum's 60th but ended up being rushed to hospital.

  15. How's stat?!published at 13:20 BST 24 September

England's quicks averaged just 0.35° of swing and 0.43° of seam movement in the opening 10 overs - the third lowest combined movement for the first innings of an ODI in England since 2006.

  16. SL 49-1published at 11 overs

That news is tempered slightly by the impressive performance of debutant Sachin Colombage on Tuesday. He stepped up as main spinner in Hasaranga's absence and was really impressive.

Will Jacks is coming on here, giving us our first sight of spin in the innings.

  17. Hasaranga heads homepublished at 13:17 BST 24 September

Some news from the Sri Lanka camp.

Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is heading home after experiencing lower back pain during a practice session.

Hasaranga experienced the discomfort prior to the first one-day international on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old, who played in all three of the T20 internationals that preceded this series, will play no further part on this tour.

  18. SL 46-1published at 10 overs

Sri Lanka have a pair of Mendises in the middle now - Kamindu and Kusal. Kusal is the skipper.

The ball with the wobble seam, somehow it has got a bit of movement.

Pathum Nissanka knew he was gone. Three fours and a six for Nissanka in his 25 runs.

That is a delivery he puts away, that's his bread and butter, but for some reason he just missed it.

That is what pressure feels for you.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.1 overs

    Nissanka lbw b Atkinson 25 (SL 45-1)

It's actually only umpire's call on leg stump with Gus Atkinson nipping the ball back but that's good enough for England. It looked out and so it proved.

    England have their breakthrough.
