This is only the third time Ben Stokes has opened the batting in Test cricket. He scored 135 runs, including two fifties, in his previous two innings as an opener.
Stokes as opener in Test cricket: 78* off 57 balls (in 2020) & 57* off 28 balls (in 2024).

England's next highest at the ground in Nottingham also came against the Kiws when they chased down 284 to clinch a four-wicket win in June 2004.
The late Graham Thorpe's 104 not out in the second innings of the latter of those matches was key to the win.

Why on earth would you declare? Daryl Mitchell was on strike for the next over and can easily strike three or four important boundaries. Time is never a factor with this England side.
