    Spinner Mitchell Santner is also into the attack as New Zealand look to squeeze in two overs before the close.

    Gay attempts a reverse sweep off his first delivery, with some semi-appeals as the ball is caught, then strikes four through point.

    A low edge through the cordon brings two more, followed by a leg bye.

    I’d rather see them go down fighting than meekly collapsing. Try to take the game to NZ and entertain everyone. The purists hate it, but they always have whether we were winning or losing. Test cricket is dying, at least this approach made it fun.

    Is this the smartest approach? Probably not. I suspect this is the last hurrah for Stokes’ side. But we watch sport for our entertainment, and this is certainly entertaining, so I’m enjoying it.

    Unexpected bounce off the pitch for Ben Sears, his delivery takes the shoulder of Ben Duckett's bat and Daryl Mitchell takes a smart catch at slip.

    Different kind of wicket to the first three - two a consequence of aggressive shots, the other a terrible misjudgement of line - but that won't be much solace to England fans as they look down the barrel of defeat.

    It’s time to rip it up and start again. The whole England cricket management needs replacing - Key and McCullum included. Accountability has to start at the top.

    England have had issues with Tom Blundell standing up the stumps to the seamers, maybe this is how they get round that problem.

  16. England to face South Africa in T20 WC semis

    Elsewhere at the Women's T20 World Cup, India have been knocked out of the tournament after a six-wicket defeat by the relentless Australians.

    It also confirms the semi-final line-ups.

    Australia will play West Indies at The Oval at 14:30 BST on Tuesday, while England face South Africa at the same venue at 18:30 on Thursday.

    The final takes place at Lord's on 5 July.
