Joe Moores, the 17-year-old debutant wicketkeeper, then asks for a helmet and is going to stand up to Bailey's bowling.

But it backfires immediately as Bailey sends one down the legside and it runs away for four byes - not the fault of Moores at all, mind.

Stand-in skipper Ben Green calls correctly and follows the trend around the other seven grounds by asking Essex to bat first.

With Wiaan Mulder no longer available, the visitors will look to Noah Thain to fill the all-rounder role, and Jordan Cox is included for some match practice before joining up with England for the second Test.

Leicestershire give a debut at the top of the order to Sheridon Gumbs and Joey Evison also comes into their XI after arriving on loan from Kent.

A good morning for Sussex under gloomy skies and floodlights shining brightly, although an unbroken partnership of 48 between Ben Kellaway and Sean Dickson has steadied the Glamorgan ship.

On a surface offering good bounce and pace, the Sussex seamers have shared the wickets with Jaydev Unadkat and Sean Hunt the pick of the attack, both inducing a number of plays and misses.

With brighter skies forecast later, Glamorgan will be hoping for improved batting conditions as the day progresses

An otherwise entirely satisfactory morning for Yorkshire was spoiled a little by Adam Lyth’s wicket 15 minutes before lunch, just touching an outswinger from Ed Barnard.

Up to that point Lyth and Will Luxton had not only resisted well after being put in but prospered at a run a minute.

Luxton set the pace, driving more confidently through the offside off front and back foot, to reach his third first-class 50. All of the Warwickshire seamers swung the ball, but Barnard and Ethan Bamber had several claims for lbw against Luxton declined.

Manav Suthar, who made his Test debut in Chandigarh just six days ago, appeared for three overs from the Peasholm Park End before lunch and immediately found turn.

A cut from Sam Whiteman flew from the top edge beyond Rob Yates at slip, enough encouragement to prompt a second slip to appear. He might bowl rather more this afternoon after that, but with three figures already on the board Yorkshire will be the happier team over lunch.

Mohammad Abbas and Shoaib Bashir are now bowling in tandem at the Riverside, but Derbyshire cannot conjure another breakthrough before the lunch interval.

The Division Two leaders have lost Ben McKinney, who was lbw offering no shot to Nick Potts, and skipper Alex Lees, caught off a miscued pull.

But Will Rhodes has hung on for 15 from 59 balls and David Bedingham played the shot of the morning, square cutting Abbas for four with a flourish, in his nine not out.

A frustrating morning for Worcestershire at New Road where they would have hoped for plenty of wickets after putting Middlesex in.

The home side have bowled pretty well but only have one success to show for it, Ben Geddes edging a low catch to third slip.

The experienced Sam Robson has been watchful but accelerated the scoring before the interval to give Middlesex something to build on.

A tidy over from acting captain Tom Haines brings to an end a productive morning session for Sussex at Hove.

Opting to bowl first under lights and cloudy conditions, they reduced Glamorgan to 43-4 after Sean Hunt removed Zain ul Hassan with his first red-ball delivery of the summer.

Ben Kellaway and Sean Dickson have steadied the innings, though, with an unbroken stand of 48 in 14 overs to lunch.

Kellaway is 32 not out and Dickson 28 - with four boundaries each so far.

Saif Zaib has looked assured at the crease and the left-hander goes to lunch just one short of a second half-century of the season.

Zaib and Nathan McSweeney, who's 28 not out, have added 84 so far after Northamptonshire lost their top three with just 41 on the board.

Gloucestershire debutant Kristian Clarke claimed two of those wickets, with Matt Taylor picking up the third.

Yorkshire's morning in front of a good crowd at North Marine Road. Warwickshire won the toss but their bowlers haven't been able to offer much threat.

The one wicket to fall came after a century opening stand, Adam Lyth edging a good bouncing delivery from Ed Barnard.

Will Luxton, playing in his 13th first class match, is more than half way towards what would be his maiden century. He's played positively without taking too many risks.

Nottinghamshire skipper Haseeb Hameed will feel his decision to put Somerset into bat has been justified.

It's been a good morning session for the defending champions who have withdrawn three of the visitors' top order.

Josh Thomas was caught in the slips by Jack Haynes for a duck off Fergus O'Neill early doors before Lewis Goldsworthy suffered similar fate from Brett Hutton.

James Rew was then run out while backing up after opener Jordan Hermann, who remains unbeaten on 25, drove hard down the ground but bowler Dillon Pennington managed to fingertip onto the stumps at the non-striker's end.

Mohammad Ali sends down his second maiden over of the innings for Notts and that might well be lunch now...

The clouds are lifting, and we should have play at Grace Road at 13:30 BST.

Leicestershire have dropped to bottom of Division One, they are still winless, and now face an Essex side on the charge.

The positives for Leicestershire? Well, they have finally won a game in one format - three in fact - and have recovered from a miserable start to their Blast campaign to now have three victories in a row.

Also - Rehan Ahmed is set to return, bringing much needed quality with bat and ball.

The negatives, though. They are stacked with injuries, with Sol Budinger and Jonny Tattersall out, and Stephen Eskinazi and Ian Holland unavailable, they are struggling somewhat.

Their issue has been that they cannot take wickets and bowl as a pack (Ben Green apart) and, with Holland gone, that task appears even harder.

Spinner Manav Suthar, who made his test debut for India earlier this month, has come into the Warwickshire attack at Scarborough.

He's causing problems and almost had Sam Whiteman caught at slip in his first over.

Suthar has been recruited to play in two Championship matches for the Bears.

This was very much Gloucestershire's morning in the first hour - but the second has so far belonged to the home side.

Saif Zaib and Nathan McSweeney are looking nicely settled now, having added 71 so far. There's no doubt the Glosters would love to separate them prior to lunch.

Sean Dickson straight drives Tom Price for four and two balls later collects another boundary, this time to mid-wicket.

Glamorgan need these two to stay together till lunch - and well beyond.

Notts Championship debutant Mohammad Ali has been hit for his first boundary in red-ball county cricket in England.

Thomas Rew is quickly onto a half-volley outside off and uses the pace of the ball to stroke it nicely for four through the covers.

After scoring at barely a run an over during the first hour Middlesex are lifting the pace at New Road.

Sam Robson is leading the way with seven boundaries and along with Max Holden they're closing in on a 50 partnership.

Brett Hutton is back into the attack for Notts.

Hutton starts with a foot no-ball but no further damage from the over.

Somerset need Thomas Rew (5*) to dig in with opener Jordan Hermann, who is 23*.

Sean Hunt's line is all wrong and Ben Kellaway turns the left-arm paceman away for four to long leg. He's had a few anxious moments, but Kellaway is now 29 not out.
