  3. SA 82-0published at 18 overs

    Markram 33, Ackerman 48

Ackerman is closing in on a first Test half-century at just the second time of asking.

An over of 10 runs, all from Ackerman. The last four driven through extra cover off the final ball of the over.

More questions than answers so far for Australia.

  4. SA 76-0published at 17.1 overs

    Markram 33, Ackerman 42

Marques Ackerman is into the 40s after reverse sweeping Nathan Lyon for four at the start of Lyon's fourth over.

After a couple of nervy moments early on, Ackerman has shown some real promise.

  5. SA 72-0published at 17 overs

    Markram 33, Ackerman 38

Just two singles for Josh Hazlewood, who has previously dismissed Aiden Markram three times in Test cricket.

  6. SA 70-0published at 16 overs

    Markram 32, Ackerman 37

Three dots end the over and South Africa are motoring along here nicely.

Josh Hazlewood had career best figures in the second Test, but like Australia, is yet to get off the mark today.

  7. 6 runs

    SA 70-0published at 15.3 overs

Marques Ackerman sends that into the stands!

Another skip down the track, he smashes a Nathan Lyon delivery for six. Using his feet and timing the stroke expertly.

A hammer blow to Lyon, who had kept the rate down until now.

Australia are on the back foot in Cape Town but they're not quite suffering as much as New Zealand in their third T20 against India in Wellington.

After piling up 198-3, New Zealand have been unable to stop India charging to 156-1 in just eight overs.

Abhishek Sharma is on the brink of another T20 century. He's just going to miss out on beating his own 30-ball record in full-member T20s.

    Scorecard

  9. SA 63-0published at 15 overs

    Markram 31, Ackerman 31

Marques Ackerman picks up two more before the over is out, this time through the leg side.

Nathan Lyon is also changing ends after a couple of tidy overs so far.

  10. SA 61-0published at 14.3 overs

    Markram 31, Ackerman 29

Josh Hazlewood is back into the attack, but from the other end from where he started the day.

Marques Ackerman returns from the drinks break in fine form.

He sends balls one and three of the over to the boundary with a couple of guided shots through point.

One lofted, one low. Same result.

  11. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 14 overs

    SA 53-0

Improved control from Australia captain Pat Cummins.

Just two singles are given up as we reach the first drinks break of the day.

  12. SA 51-0published at 13 overs

    Markram 30, Ackerman 20

Just two runs come from that over.

The crowd at Newlands is significantly improved on what we've seen in the previous two matches in this series. Always good for the game when you have a well-attended Test match.

  13. SA 51-0published at 12.2 overs

    Markram 30, Ackerman 20

Some calculated aggression from Marques Ackerman brings a couple more run and brings up the 50 partnership.

Exactly what South Africa will have hoped for after losing the toss.

  14. SA 49-0published at 12 overs

Aiden Markram picks up a couple more before the over is out.

Australia captain Pat Cummins has gone for a run-a-ball in his first three overs.

  15. SA 47-0published at 11.3 overs

Pat Cummins strays short and, not for the first time, Aiden Markram takes advantage.

Stand and deliver. Markram pulls it square for four more.

A good response from Cummins, who beats Markram's bat with his next delivery.

You can see the logic of Australia reverting to their "fab four" bowling attack in such an important match. You cannot see the logic of them choosing to bowl first on this pitch with Lyon selected.

  17. SA 43-0published at 11 overs

Four dots start the over before Marques Ackerman cannot fight the urge for a trip down the wicket any longer.

He and Markram exchange singles to end the over.

Winning the toss and bowling on a flat track after bringing back a spinner for a seamer is an unusual approach. Boland could probably bat 4 in this team and do just as good a job, then you've got his bowling as well but it's all a bit late now.

  19. SA 41-0published at 10 overs

    Markram 23, Ackerman 17

A few dot balls take us to the 10 over mark.

Mitchell Starc is out of the attack. It is time for spin in the form of Nathan Lyon.

  20. SA 41-0published at 9.3 overs

Clobbered for four more by Aiden Markram.

A bit of a wider delivery from Pat Cummins, but Markram adjusts and places the ball on an identical line to his cover drive in the previous over.

He's averaging over 58.5 in Test cricket against Australia.
