  1. SA 129-0published at 25.3 overs

    Markram 46, Ackerman 81

Another four, but it is Aiden Markram who is joining the party here.

He closes in on a half-century of his own.

Only six players have ever scored a century before lunch on day one of a Test.

Marques Ackerman might have two more overs to get there.

  3. SA 125-0published at 25 overs

    Markram 41, Ackerman 80

An 18-run over for South Africa off Mitchell Starc. Marques Ackerman takes 17 of them.

Nathan Lyon will want and needs to add some control to proceedings here.

Four fours in four balls for Marques Ackerman.

This one is hacked over the slip cordon, but in a controlled manner.

It could not come at a worse time for Australia as we near lunch.

  6. SA 119-0published at 24.3 overs

    Markram 41, Ackerman 76

Marques Ackerman has done it again. Three balls, three fours.

All very different, the latest a clip to find the gap at third.

Mitchell Starc is being taken apart here.

  7. SA 115-0published at 24.2 overs

    Markram 41, Ackerman 72

Marques Ackerman, take a bow. That is superb.

Mitchell Starc goes straighter, but Marques Ackerman picks him off with a clubbed shot through mid-wicket, sending the ball to the rope once again.

  8. SA 111-0published at 24.1 overs

    Markram 41, Ackerman 68

Marques Ackerman takes advantage of width offered by Mitchell Starc.

A glanced shot through the off side adds four more.

  9. SA 107-0published at 24 overs

    Markram 41, Ackerman 64

Four runs come from the over as South Africa deal exclusively in singles.

The weather looks glorious at the superb Newlands. One of the best Test grounds in my opinion.

  10. SA 103-0published at 23 overs

    Markram 40, Ackerman 62

A tap on the shoulder for Aiden Markram, perhaps? He's looked brilliant on the whole, but he knows that shot was a poor one and he also got away with a loose pull shot a couple of overs ago.

If he and Marques Ackerman can survive the few overs to go until lunch, Australia will be left really frustrated at the break.

Nathan Lyon continues with Mitchell Starc in the attack.

  11. dropped catch

Markram dropped on 39 by Headpublished at 22.4 overs

    SA 102-0

Australia cannot get their luck to turn right now.

A very loose drive from Aidan Markram picks out Travis Head at short cover.

The shot was very questionable, but the drop was even worse.

Both Head and Mitchell Starc cannot believe it.

  12. SA 102-0published at 22 overs

    Markram 39, Ackerman 62

Four more for Ackerman and it brings up three figures for South Africa before lunch.

They are going at a very tidy rate too, with Pat Cummins giving up 33 runs from his six overs so far.

Mitchell Starc, who will return to the attack next, has been the pick of the bowlers so far.

  13. 6 runs

    SA 98-0published at 21.5 overs

    Markram 39, Ackerman 58

This is getting really tough for Australia.

Marques Ackerman goes unorthodox and fires a shot behind his stance all the way for six.

    Impressive hitting.

  14. SA 92-0published at 21.4 overs

    Markram 39, Ackerman 52

A half-chance for Australia as Aiden Markram goes for a pull shot at a shorter Pat Cummins delivery.

Markram did not know where that was going, but the ball does land safe - much to his surprise.

A rare mis-timed shot from the South Africa opener.

  15. SA 90-0published at 21 overs

    Markram 38, Ackerman 51

A couple more singles for South Africa, who score seven in that over.

Ackerman has scored a lot of his runs through the leg side today and nothing that has been too straight.

  16. SA 88-0published at 20.3 overs

    Markram 37, Ackerman 50

Aiden Markram is getting in on the act.

Another classy cover drive beats the fielder. He and Marques Ackerman have given South Africa an excellent platform to build on.

They are closing in on an 100-run partnership before lunch.

  17. 50 runs

Marques Ackerman needs just one ball in the over to get his 50.

It has been a great knock from the Test newbie, reaching his first half-century in just 62 deliveries.

He has scored north of 6,000 first-class runs at an average north of 48.5, and can add a Test 50 to his list of career achievements.

  19. SA 83-0published at 20 overs

    Markram 33, Ackerman 48

Marques Ackerman gets a shot to go down the leg side, but can only take a single from it.

Two dots end the over and Ackerman will have the strike again, needing a single for a first Test half-century.

  20. SA 82-0published at 19 overs

    Markram 33, Ackerman 48

A good over from Josh Hazlewood, who records only the second maiden of the day.

South Africa have scored 29 runs off the last 30 balls, illustrating the issues that Australia have faced thus far.
