Finally, Emilio Gay gets some reward for his 'digging in' efforts.

A lone appeal, and a very enthusiastic one, from Mohammad Ali as he thinks that he's got Emilio Gay lbw - but the England opener has middled it.

At least it's given the Pakistan players something to laugh about, as they haven't had much of that over the past two days.

Emilio Gay is having a tough time. He has eight from 29 balls and is beaten yet again outside the off stump by Khurram Shahzad.

He just needs to hang in there and lean on all of Joe Root's experience for support.

Muhammad Abbas keeps probing away, but he looks frustrated as Emilio Gay nudges a couple down to fine leg from a full, straight delivery.

Gay is then completely squared up by an unplayable ball, and Abbas stands with his hands on his hips, in complete disbelief that it wasn't worthy of a wicket.

Pakistan are clearly trying to zone in on Joe Root's front pad, but Khurram Shahzad overpitches and Root effortlessly whips it away for four more.

The keeper is still standing back.

It's been a tricky start for Emilio Gay but the moment he's offered some width from Muhammad Abbas, he drives beautifully past extra cover for his first boundary.

That takes England's lead beyond 200. It genuinely could be enough already.

Conditions have been extremely challenging in this Test match with 31% false shots (3 in every 10 deliveries) played by the batters so far.

In all Tests in England since records began in 2006, only on one other occasion have batters played false shots more often in a Test (33% in the England v South Africa at The Oval in Sep 2022).
