Emily Newnham secured Great Britain's sixth medal of the championships, surging to the line to take silver in the women's 400m hurdles final.

Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith, speaking to BBC Sport: "I wanted to put down just enough to make sure I get an autocue, but also just enough to be with these talented ladies.

"I'll just say - Mujinga Kambundji's done amazing. She's just had a baby. And to come back and be running so well, and defending her title - I think it's so inspiring.

"But when you've got so many talented, motivated, and hard-working athletes like that in your semi, the important thing is just: a good lane draw for the final, and make sure you give every single competitor the respect they deserve.

"I don't really think about what's come before me, or what lies ahead.

"I just want to stay in the moment and execute."

She will have done all of those awful lactic acid sessions.

"I was watching the BBC Newscast - you lot need to cover the facts, man. Saying I was injured and everything. The whole point of rounds is to survive and advance.

"I knew the Dutch guy had the PB to beat me, so I was trying to conserve rounds. I was laughing all the way through me and my coach.

"We got a couple of big races coming up. The Diamond League final, the Ultimate Championships, so it is about conserving yourself and getting ready.

"I knew I was the best in the world. I knew that, on paper, I was second faster than every single one of these guys. It was about me and the clock."

Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith, speaking to BBC Sport: "My coach just said once you seal the deal, make sure you do it.

"This is your home - defend it. I knew it was going to take one hell of an effort to get past me.

"So I knew that for them to beat me they have to have a super special moment. Nobody was going to beat me on this track. This is my home. I have been here since nine.

"I know this track like the back of my end. I have my stand. Now I'm going to go for Mayor of Birmingham and Wolverhampton. All my boys are going to have a job when I am done."

On celebrating in his stand: "That was spur of the moment. This means so much to me. I have been here since nine [years of age]."

Emily Newnham's done so well. She focused in.

It's just what you need when it's a relatively new event for you, to go into a winter of training hard. You've got the belief.

And also, you're understanding the event a little bit more. So you can make those little tweaks, so you can come out really strong the following season.

And I think that's exactly what's going to happen with Emily.

Scary to think how fast Emily Newnham can potentially go.

She has got a great 400m flat speed. Sharpening up her hurdling technique can take more time off of that.

A second podium for Great Britain in the space of 20 minutes - Emily Newnham wins silver in the women's 400m hurdles!

Slovakia's Emma Zapletalova wins comfortably in 52.91 seconds, but Newnham comes through well on the final straight to set a personal best of 53.33 in second.

The 22-year-old was fourth at the final hurdle and won her medal from lane nine, just as Matthew Hudson-Smith had done.

Portugal's Fatoumata Binta Diallo set a national record of 53.55 for bronze, while Great Britain's Lina Nielsen was sixth with 54.35.

It is incredible to watch Emily Newnham, and she is still 22.

You can see how raw she is with her stride pattern. I really do believe she has everything to get a medal tonight.

She has got to run her own race and that's what you have got to do. You cannot watch others.

Lina Nielsen has done two rounds already, but they have worked in her favour. She has improved round on round.

She looks fantastic. Her hurdling is brilliant, she has got the speed and she has got the endurance.

She ran a 400m personal best this season, so she's coming into great form.

For me, I am excited to see what she can do in the final. Once you're in there, anything can happen.

Emily Newnham is one of the girls coming into this with a sub-54 second time, and she knows that she is in good shape.

In the end, anything can happen. It doesn't matter who the favourite is. It is just about getting it right and getting out there.

Time for more one lap action - it's the women's 400m hurdles final.

Can Great Britain's Emily Newnham, the European under-23 champion, continue a breakthrough season with another medal?

This summer, she has won her first national title, a Commonwealth Games silver and broken 54 seconds. “I never really panic,” she said after finishing second in her semi-final with a blistering last 100m.

Team-mate Lina Nielsen, who came seventh two years ago in Rome, set a 54.04 sec personal best in the semi-finals on Tuesday, the third-fastest time in that round.

The quickest semi-final time was a 53.87 PB for Paulien Couckuyt of Belgium but the clear favourite is Slovakia’s world bronze medallist Emma Zapletalova.
