Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade has joined Serie A side Juventus on a season-long loan.

The German international, who joined the Magpies last summer, has featured 53 times in all competitions, scoring 11 goals.

Woltemade was a second-half substitute in Saturday's 2-0 win at Tottenham.

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson told BBC Radio Newcastle: "We felt like he might be better off going to another European league where the pace of the game isn't as quick, isn't as physical, may well suit him more. I think when Fernandez-Pardo came in it just opened the door for Nick Woltemade to get away to play regular first-team football because I don't think it was ever going to be the case here.

"Osula has moved ahead of him. Wissa has had an outstanding start to the season and with Fernandez-Pardo coming in you would think that he was going to jump ahead of him as well. So I think it benefits both sides to be quite honest."

• Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo has signed in a deal worth £51.4m plus add-ons. The 21-year-old Belgium international is Newcastle's eighth summer signing.

• Striker Nick Woltemade has joined Serie A side Juventus on loan for the remainder of the 2026-27 season.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo says it "made complete sense" to join Newcastle after speaking with head coach Matthias Jaissle.

The 21-year-old Belgium international has signed from Lille on a long-term contract for an initial £51.4m.

"I'm really, really happy to be here and very proud to be at such a big club," Fernandez-Pardo said. "I spoke to the head coach and he really showed how much he wanted me to be here.

"In terms of my own career progression, it made complete sense to come so I didn't hesitate at all.

"I know the club, I know about the stadium, I know it's a fantastic atmosphere. I've followed the team. What I've seen is a team that's very ambitious, wants to attack, get forward, really chase teams and go after them, and that's really something I want to take part in as well.

"I'm still young, I'm still hungry, and that's why I'm here, and I want to make that progress with Newcastle. I can't wait to start the wonderful adventure here."

Jaissle added: "I am very happy to welcome Matias to our club. We were all delighted when we knew we could complete this deal.

"Matias is a highly technical player with explosiveness in his game. He can score and assist, he has courage, and he has the ability to take players on. We're sure our supporters will enjoy watching him play.

"He has already shown in Lille that he can perform on the big stage, and we will work closely with him to keep developing his game further. We are excited to see him in a Newcastle United shirt."

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock believes Eddie Howe's departure from Newcastle United this summer acted as a catalyst for a transitional period at St James' Park.

Since the end of the 2025-26 season, the Magpies have also lost the services of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.

"Newcastle were the ones who chose to get rid of their manager this summer, in my opinion," Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club. "They pushed Eddie Howe and gave him a decision to make.

"If you don't back your manager, they will be sitting there thinking: 'Well, hang about, I need money to strengthen here and you are tying my hands around my back.'

"The club didn't need to do that, they left him with a decision to make about his future at the club.

"Do people really think they didn't want to lose Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes? Because I think they absolutely would've taken £100m. These haven't been forced decisions."

The Observer's Rory Smith replied: "What Newcastle have done, amid all of the change, has been really impressive, but it is reactive to a situation they maybe wouldn't have chosen to be in at the start of summer.

"But I disagree that they wanted to sell Tonali or Guimaraes. If they could have kept those two players, they would have."

We asked for your views on the potential signing of Matias Fernandez-Pardo, which could lead to Nick Woltemade joining Juventus on loan.

Here are some of your comments:

Chris: Would feel conflicted if Big Nick goes. Desperate for him to succeed but all the evidence seems to be pointing to the fact that, unfortunately, he just doesn't suit our style of play - probably even less so under Matthias Jaissle than under Eddie Howe. He seems to be more of a moments type of player rather than one who's going to dictate a game consistently. We aren't a team that can carry that type of player. Wish him the best wherever he goes and will look out for his name.

Tony: Don't know much about Fernandez-Pardo so have to trust the judgement of the guys in the know at Newcastle, but Woltemade does not, and I don't see how he ever will, reach the standard for the Premier League. While I hoped for a lot from Nick, it's time for him to move on. Fingers crossed we can get the Fernandez-Pardo deal across the line this time.

Richard: Woltemade needs to play and play often, so a loan move would be good for him. I still think he has a future at Newcastle.

Alan: He didn't truly click while Howe was in charge. Now, under Jaissle, I feel his lack of speed is problem. We have height in Big Joe, Dan Burn, Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman, and we have other players who can distribute the ball in transitions. So he does seem to be surplus to requirements. I am sad to see him go as I don't think we have seen him at his brilliant best. But I think a loan move could do him the world of good. Come back stronger, big man!

John: Unfortunately, Woltemade will struggle to fit into the system we intend to play. Rather than sell him now for a big loss, send him on loan and hope he regains his form - then sell for a reasonable amount.

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson has a new favourite Magpies player in Amar Dedic following the full-back's impressive start on Tyneside.

After Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-0, Anderson praised a number of the individual performances from Mathias Jaissle's side.

"I'm always cautious," he told BBC Radio Newcastle. "It's only two games in, but there's more encouraging signs than there is negativity, that's for sure."

"Nico Gonzalez came in and had an excellent debut. Anthony Elanga looks like a new player compared with last season, when he came in for a lot of criticism. Yoane Wissa the same. They're like two new signings as well because of the way that they've played in the opening games. Lewis Miley came into midfield and just strolled - he and Gonzalez bossed it in there.

"Defensively, we were worried. I was worried about Sven Botman coming into the season because his form in pre-season had been really poor. But, he and Malick Thiaw are building up a good relationship.

"I'm getting a poster of Dedic put on my wall. His energy and fitness levels are unbelievable. He just gets up and down and he doesn't look like he's breathing. Lewis Hall's second half was brilliant defensively.

"When Lukas Hornicek was called upon in the first half he made good saves - he did what he had to do.

"It's only three games in but you've won two and drawn one. It builds belief and confidence."

French football journalist Jibril Diop has given insight into Lille forward Mathias Fernandez-Pardo who Newcastle are closing in on a deal for.

"They're getting a player who's obviously very young, 21-years-old," Diop told BBC Radio Newcastle. "His best attribute is probably one-on-one dribbling and yes, he's very technically gifted as well and obviously, he can improve and become the world beater that Newcastle expect him to be at some point."

Diop added: "When he was in Belgium in the academy, there was a coach who said that he is Eden Hazard without the finishing product, without the finishing touch. So there's always been that comparison with Hazard, but he's not, I'm sorry to say, he's not going to be as good as Hazard.

"He's going to be a very good player but he doesn't have that 'it' factor Hazard had when he was at Lille."

We asked you what transfer business Newcastle United need to complete before Tuesday's 23:00 BST deadline.

Here are some of your views:

Andrew: Newcastle need a left-back without a doubt, as cover for Lewis Hall. They also need a centre-back, as Fabian Schar is old and injury prone and, if we play a back three, we are short of players. These are both musts! A back-up for Yoane Wissa would be a good plan too, but that's not essential. Our recruitment this summer has actually been really good!

Alvin: Cover at left-back is key because Dan Burn must never play there ever again. A centre-forward might be necessary if Nick Woltemade is deemed unsuitable for the new manager's system, just like he was for the previous manager's.

Paul: We are crying out for a proper goalscoring striker and I would love to see Victor Osimhen at our club. We need another young centre-back, like Fikayo Tomori, and cover for Hall. That would be a great transfer window!

Phil: One word - balance. We have players at opposite ends of the career spectrum, so we need players who are in or approaching their prime to balance that out.

Mosaddek: Given Matthias Jaissle's system, he could still do with another attacking midfielder and another striker. William Osula is still raw, despite his quickness, and Woltemade doesn't seem like he has a place in this team.

Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo in a deal worth up to £55m.

The move could pave the way for fellow forward Nick Woltemade to leave on loan following interest from Juventus.

The Belgium forward has been a long-standing target of Newcastle's - dating back to former head coach Eddie Howe's time in charge - and fits the age range the club have been targeting.

Of those players aged 21 and under across Europe's big five leagues last season, Fernandez-Pardo ranked second for big chances (21), fifth for touches in the opposition box (184) and shots on target (30), and seventh for goals and assists combined (13).

His ability to play in a number of positions across the frontline also made him an attractive target as manager Matthias Jaissle looked to strengthen his squad.

Just a few hours after the unveiling of Nico Gonzalez, Matthias Jaissle made it clear he would continue to push for further deals in the final throes of the window.

Another forward is on the German's wishlist and Newcastle have a long-standing interest in Lille's Matias Fernandez-Pardo, whose creativity and ability to play in a number of positions across the frontline is a huge draw.

The 21-year-old also fits the age range Newcastle have targeted this summer.

This would be a complicated deal to do in the final days of the window, but it was a little telling that Lille manager Davide Ancelotti left Fernandez-Pardo out of his squad for the weekend's game against Paris St-Germain and has decided to exclude him from training until the window shuts.

Tottenham fans

Nigel: I thought the first half was good and everyone turned up, but we were outplayed by Newcastle's fantastic goalie.

Steve: Much of the same from last season. New signings need to gel, but how long that will take with Tottenham, you never know. There are no easy games in the Premier League and I feel sorry for the supporters, who have suffered for too long. You can see why Harry Kane moved on.

Robert: I am fed up with constant excuses from Spurs about poor performances. This has been happening for several years. There are no excuses for their lacklustre performances this season.

Martin: We normally do well at the start of a season and then fade away. Hopefully, these two defeats will dispel complacency and compel a more determined and humble attitude.

Newcastle fans

Richard: Wissa and Elanga are brimming with confidence at the moment and long may it last. The solidity that Gonzalez brings is going to be really important. A lot of work ahead but it's looking good.

Derek: Brilliant is all you can say. The two goals we scored were top class.

Karl: Fantastic start for the new manager after Eddie's exit and the loss of some huge players. The manager has come in and been a revelation. This is a guy who is a perfect fit for our emotional club and fanbase. Very optimistic for the new season and silencing some doubters.

Phil: I like the positive way Jaissle has approached the job. Key improvements from Elanga and Wissa, and what a signing Gonzalez is. He has a real eye for a pass and, on Saturday's evidence, is a more than adequate replacement for Tonali. I'm still concerned about the roles of Barnes and Woltemade in the team. However, a brilliant team performance from the lads, which bodes well for the rest of the season.

Matthias Jaissle, by his own admission, "likes challenges" and this was certainly a big one to take on.

Saturday was exactly 30 days since predecessor Eddie Howe oversaw what proved to be his final match in charge, a sobering 4-1 friendly defeat by Bristol City, before stepping down.

Newcastle had sold Sandro Tonali. Anthony Gordon had left for Barcelona. Captain Bruno Guimaraes' sights were set on a move to Arsenal.

The start of the season was also rapidly approaching.

Newcastle have made further additions since then, but only one of their seven summer signings, Nico Gonzalez, has previously played in the Premier League.

All of the new arrivals are aged 24 and under.

Yet you would not necessarily know it by the immediate impact full-back Amar Dedic has made following his £30m move from Benfica, or how Lukas Hornicek has stood up to the physicality of the Premier League since his £25.7m switch from Braga.

It could easily be forgotten, given what happened after the break at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Hornicek was among those to play an important role in this win after making three saves at crucial moments in the first half.

No wonder Jaissle clenched his fists on the touchline after Hornicek got a strong hand behind Jan Paul van Hecke's header.

There was a similarly enthusiastic reaction from the former Hoffenheim defender when Lewis Hall blocked a goalbound effort from Pedro Porro in the first half.

Although Newcastle beat Spurs last season, too, there were also a number of games when the visitors wilted in such circumstances.

Newcastle won just four of their 19 top-flight matches on the road and, home or away, they had not previously kept a single clean sheet since March.

However, going in level in their first away day of this campaign gave Newcastle the chance to regroup at half-time.

The visitors sought to be more aggressive after the break and clinically took Spurs apart with their only two shots on target.

Newcastle are exploring a deal to sign Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, 21, but nothing is advanced in terms of negotiations for the Belgium international. (Florian Plettenberg, external)

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson says the Magpies had the opportunity to beat Tottenham "more convincingly" than just 2-0.

"It could have been an awful lot more," he told BBC Radio Newcastle. "They had chances in the second half to really put Spurs to the sword.

"You definitely would have took 2-0 before kick-off, but there were chances, and chances to win it more convincingly."
