Cameron Norrie kept Luca Van Assche waiting as long as he was allowed, until the chair umpire made the call to chase up where the Briton had got to.

Norrie certainly needs a reset after that second set. Can he get himself back on track here?

It wasn't a great set [for Norrie].

If you think about it, it could have been two clinical sets from Van Asshce but the fight from Norrie got him back into the first set.

Norrie hasn't really found a solution to beating Van Assche other than fighting and wearing him out which Norrie can do and he'll be happy to do that.

There's no stopping Daniil Medvedev at the moment. He's won 91% of his first-serve points and Hugo Gaston still hasn't seen a break point since the Russian's opening service game in the the first set.

Three games on the bounce and that's the second set wrapped up for Medvedev.

Another comfortable hold for Toby Samuel, who's only dropped two points across his opening three service games.

Sealed with a monstrous serve out wide which cannons off the top of Tomas Machac's outstretched racquet and into the crowd.

The first set took more than an hour. The second takes just half of that.

A great response from Luca Van Assche who, after not making too much happen in the first set, is really finding his targets now and going for winners.

Toby Samuel chased down a telegraphed drop shot and pinged a winner across the net at an acute angle, bringing a smattering of applause from the court 10 crowd.

However, Machac keeps his cool to hold, showing good intent as he attacks the net and forces Samuel into a backhand long.

British qualifier Toby Samuel should take inspiration from compatriot Arthur Fery's unexpected run at Wimbledon as he makes his US Open debut, says his former coach Richard Irwin.

Fery, then ranked 114th in the world, reached the semi-finals in SW19 as a wildcard, including twice coming from 2-1 down to win in five sets and defeating ninth seed Flavio Cobolli in straight sets in the last eight.

World number 110 Samuel, who partnered Fery in the boys' doubles at Wimbledon in 2019, came through qualifying to reach his third major of the year.

"You never know. Arthur's living proof that it's possible," Irwin told BBC Radio Solent when assessing Samuel's chances.

"I'd love him to push towards going into the second week, maybe getting the third round. That would be amazing for his confidence, knowing he can win main draw at that level."

He added: "It only takes one win. If you can win a round in those big events, the points it gives you will boost him into the top 100 and then you don't need to have wildcards. The future is looking so bright for him."

A first opportunity of set two goes the way of Luca Van Assche - and the Frenchman does get the early break as Cameron Norrie nets a backhand.

Norrie twice trailed by a break in the opening set, so there will be no panic, but Van Assche looks to have taken things up a notch since the tie-break.

Tomas Machac has reached the fourth round on his previous two appearances at the US Open but arrives in New York short on matches.

The 25-year-old Czech has only played twice since the end of May (including missing Wimbledon) after suffering a tear in his left foot at Roland Garros.

A former top-20 player, he is now 58th in the ATP rankings.
