England have won all five of their meetings with Argentina in the Steve Borthwick era, including their most recent match at Allianz Stadium in November when flanker Tom Curry was involved in a tunnel bust-up with Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi.

“It’s a big rivalry now,” said captain Jamie George. “We look at Argentina on the calendar whenever the fixtures come out and we know it will be a special occasion.

“On the field we’re very aware that when we play Argentina they’re an incredibly proud nation and it’s going to be hostile.

“They’re going to be desperate to win, especially on their own turf.”

Argentina have only beaten England once in 15 meetings since the start of 2010.

Argentina is a country dominated by football and Messi mania, no more so than this weekend when they attempt to win back-to-back World Cups.

But while acknowledging that football is a "religion" in the South American country, Pumas head coach Felipe Contepomi says rugby is "booming" in Argentina thanks to their own success on the world stage - they have reached the World Cup semi-finals three times since 2007.

"Amateur rugby here in Argentina is booming," Contepomi told BBC Sport."It's very community-based rugby and the clubs are growing. We have more and more people every year.

"It is not comparable with football because I always say rugby is a sport, football is a religion for an Argentinian.

"The dimension is completely different. Even myself, I live for rugby, but football is still in my skin."

Like England, Argentina began their Nations Championship campaign with a defeat, losing 47-38 to Scotland in a 12-try thriller.

However, the Pumas bounced back with a 35-21 win over Wales last Saturday, led by two tries from back row Joaquin Oviedo.

Argentina secured a try bonus in each match, running in five tries on both occasions.

England ended a five-match losing streak with a thumping 73-8 win over Fiji at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last Saturday.

Steve Borthwick's side piled on 11 tries, including a hat-trick off the bench for Henry Pollock, to pick up their first win of the 2026 Nations Championship.

An ill-disciplined and disjointed Fiji played half of the match with 14 men after scrum-half Simione Kuruvoli was shown a straight red for a kick out at Ellis Genge.

Seven days earlier, England were outclassed by South Africa at Ellis Park, losing 45-21 as the world champions ran in seven tries.

England came into 2026 on an 11-match winning streak but faltered after thumping Wales in their Six Nations opener.

Felipe Contepomi makes two changes from last Saturday's win over Wales, with prop Mayco Vivas and centre Matias Moroni replacing Boris Wenger and Lucio Cinti in the XV.

Wenger and Cinti are among the replacements.

Also on the bench are Pedro Delgado, Efrain Elias, and Joaquin Moro, who replace Francisco Coria Marchetti, Franco Molina, and Ignacio Mendy.

Steve Borthwick has named an unchanged starting XV to face Argentina, resisting the temptation to start Henry Pollock after his hat-trick against Fiji.

Ben Spencer comes onto the bench in place of Alex Mitchell, who suffered a hamstring strain last Saturday, while Asher Opoku-Fordjour is a late withdrawal. He's replaced by George Kloska.

Northampton prop Emmanuel Iyogun is set to win his first cap after being named among the forward replacements.

France moved top of the Northern Hemisphere table with a comfortable 42-15 win over Japan.

Matthieu Jalibert and hooker Maxime Lamothe both crossed twice as France ran in six tries while captain Maxime Lucu contributed 15 points from five conversions and a try.

Leading 28-15 after a physical first half, France put themselves out of reach with two quick scores after the break.

Joe Schmidt ended his time as Australia head coach with a thumping win in Perth, thrashing Italy 57-10 to snap a six-match losing streak and record their first win of the Nations Championship.

The hosts secured the try bonus in the 26th minute and led 38-5 at half-time before adding a further three second-half scores in a nine-try rout.

Second row Josh Canham starred with a hat-trick.

Wales endured a tough 80 minutes against South Africa, failing to score against the world champions in a 43-0 defeat.

The Springboks, who led 17-0 at half-time, crossed over seven times as they made it three bonus-point wins from three at the Nations Championship.

Steve Tandy's Wales again failed to score as their attack looked limited with the aggregate score in the past two games between these sides standing at 116-0.

It was an 11th successive win for South Africa as they cemented their position at the top of the world rankings, while Wales lie 12th.

Scotland picked up their second win of the Nations Championship - and leapfrogged Ireland into second place - with a hard-fought bonus-point victory over Fiji at Murrayfield.

Tevita Ikanivere, Selestino Ravutaumada and Elia Canakaivata all crossed over in a 20-minute burst as a resurgent Fiji - showing few signs of their 73-8 mauling by England - built a 17-7 first-half lead.

Scotland were indebted to their replacements, with Pierre Schoeman, Scott Cummings, and Jamie Dobie (twice) all scoring off the bench to complete a 33-17 win for Gregor Townsend's side.

Ireland were overwhelmed by a ruthless New Zealand in a one-sided contest, losing 40-21 as the hosts preserved their 32-year unbeaten run at Eden Park.

The All Blacks punished a litany of Irish errors to secure the bonus point before half-time and added a further two tries in the second half to wrap up an emphatic win for the three-time world champions.

Jack Conan crossed for Ireland's solitary first-half score after Luke Jacobsen was yellow-carded for a dangerous clearout. Joe McCarthy and Hugo Keenan scored after the break.

On Wednesday, Argentina came from behind to win 2-1 in Atlanta and knock England out of the World Cup in the semi-finals.

Today, the rivalry turns to the oval ball, with England taking on the Pumas in Santiago del Estero in the third round of the Nations Championship.
