Ebbw Vale fly-half Cai Evans spoiled Swansea's St Helen's homecoming with a penalty to seal a 27-26 win in Super Rygbi Cymru (SRC).

The Whites had led 26-10 after home full-back Mat Protheroe became the first player to score a try at the revamped venue and added another in the second half.

Further tries came from scrum-half Matthew Aubrey and fly-half Josh Phillips, who finished with 11 points.

Ebbw Vale responded with two tries from hooker Ieuan Morris and scores from number eight Rhys Jenkins and prop Luke Garrett.

Dragons back Evans added seven points with the boot, including the vital penalty that left Swansea still searching for a first win of the 2026-27 season.

There was a lengthy second-half stoppage following a serious leg injury for Swansea wing Iwan Glynn.

One stand was open for the first game back at St Helen's and a second will be open for the next home game against Cardiff on Thursday, 15 October.

There was a crowd of more than 1,000 present, with hopes of an attendance of close to 3,000 for the Blue and Blacks fixture.

Ospreys' opening United Rugby Championship (URC) match in Swansea will be staged against Dragons on Saturday, 24 October.

Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) became the first team to beat Newport this season by easing to a 65-28 win in Colwyn Bay.

RGC, with fly-half Billy McBryde pulling the strings on his 100th appearance for the club, ran in nine tries as they stylishly avenged an opening weekend defeat by the Black and Ambers.

Newport did claim a four-try bonus point from their trip north but lose top spot to Cardiff, who beat Carmarthen Quins 35-12 at the Arms Park.

It was 7-7 at half-time but Dan Fish's side claimed a six-point haul thanks to tries by wings Dewi Cross (2) and Iwan Pyrs-Jones, scrum-half Sion Davies and hooker Tom Howe.

Cardiff are now the only unbeaten side after five rounds of the season.

Champions Llandovery lost at Pontypool on opening weekend but climbed to fourth in the table with a 31-15 victory against Pooler at Church Bank, turning four points into six with a late try.

Bridgend showed their fighting spirit to earn a bonus-point win against Aberavon in tricky conditions at the Brewery Field on Thursday.

The Ravens triumphed 24-19 after trailing 19-5 at half-time, with wing Cameron Ellis scoring the winner in the 73rd minute.
