  7. How do add-ons work in football transfers?published at 07:16 BST 13 August

Chief football news reporter Simon Stone byline banner

It is common practice these days for transfer fees to have performance-based add-ons. The theory is the selling club gains more if the player goes on to be extremely successful, while the buying club is to some extent protected financially if the transfer doesn't work out.

In some cases, the total value of add-ons is significant - Real Madrid could end up paying an extra £30m to Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham depending on how successful he is over the course of his career in the Spanish capital, for example.

In others, like the potential £1.7m worth of add-ons Brighton's £29.78m signing of Greece Under-21 forward Charalampos Kostoulas, are less significant.

Clubs sometimes say add-ons are 'easily achievable' or 'difficult'.

Easier-to-achieve add-ons can include things like making a basic number of appearances, or scoring a certain amount of goals. Add-ons can also be attached to a team's success rather than the individual player's - a club may agree to an add-on requiring an extra payment if they qualify for Europe, for example.

Others can be more ambitious - tied to extreme levels of individual or collective success, like winning the Champions League or the Ballon d'Or.

An example of the difficulty add-ons can present when discussing valuations would be the claims made in the Portuguese media in 2022 that the first additional payment in Darwin Nunez's £64m-plus-add-ons move from Benfica to Liverpool was triggered by the Uruguayan making just 10 appearances.

Then Liverpool boss Arne Slot rejected speculation he had not started Nunez in some games because it would trigger an additional payment.

Whether Liverpool paid more for Nunez, or club captain Virgil van Dijk - for whom they paid a flat fee of £75m to Southampton in 2017 - cannot be determined without knowing exactly what add-ons were included in the Nunez deal, then figuring out which conditions he has and has not met.

  8. 'Selling Spence would be regressive' - fans on Inter talkspublished at 18:22 BST 12 August

    Your Tottenham opinions banner

We asked you whether Tottenham selling Djed Spence to Inter Milan in a deal worth a minimum £25.6m (30m euros) is a wise decision.

Here are some of your comments:

Alistair: No. Seems mad, he's been developed into an elite attacking full-back to pair with Pedro Porro and now he's going. Destiny Udogie is too injury prone. What an odd choice, especially if he wants to stay.

Anthony: I definitely don't think it is wise that my team sell Djed Spence. I have always liked him, he's a good defender and he will only get better and better - keep, keep, keep.

Keef: This makes no sense at all. I know he wants first-team football, and Roberto de Zerbi can't guarantee that. However, if we have an injury (which we will), we are lacking any credible cover if we sell him. For the fee being quoted, it seems very cheap too.

Ross: Given his age, experience, versatility and off the back of solid World Cup performances, the fee for Spence seems way too low to warrant considering selling him.

Rob: Selling Spence makes no sense when he had a great World Cup and was one of the better performers last year. Excited for new season but selling Spence would be a regressive step given his versatility.

Peter: I don't want him to go but I think that's a positive step for him and his career and I wish him well, but the reason he's gone is because we can get a grip for two-seasons-in-a-row.

Tom: It makes total sense as he will want to keep his England place. But he's not first choice at right-back (Porro) or left-back (Udogie/Andy Robertson), for a season where we have no European games. Meanwhile, our attack desperately needs attention. Makes sense to cash in now and let him move to a team where he will start.

Ian: You cannot keep a player who wants to leave, simple as that. If the guy wants to go, let him go. The thing is, they should have treated him better in the first place.

Inter Milan are in advanced talks to sign Tottenham and England full-back Djed Spence, in a deal worth a minimum of £25.6m (30m euros).

  10. Is Gakpo moving to Spurs?published at 13:44 BST 12 August

BBC Sport football reporter Aadam Patel byline banner

Aadam Patel has been answering some of your latest transfer window questions.

Rodney asked: Is Gakpo going to Tottenham?

Aadam said: We reported in June that a number of clubs including Spurs were monitoring Cody Gakpo's situation at Liverpool.

The interest is certainly genuine for a player who has proven it in the Premier League but the reality is that unless Liverpool bring in more players and Tottenham were to make an offer in excess of £60m, Gakpo stays put.

The Dutch international's contract at Anfield is until 2030 and despite a below-par season last time out, those at Liverpool still view him as a proven multi-functional attacker. Besides, Andoni Iraola does not want to weaken his squad.

Right now, a move to Spurs looks unlikely but if Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Bradley Barcola, who primarily operates down the left flank, then this will be one to keep an eye on.

  11. What are Spurs looking for in the transfer market?published at 13:32 BST 12 August

BBC Sport football news reporter Nizaar Kinsella byline banner

BBC Sport football reporter Nizaar Kinsella has been answering some of your latest Tottenham transfer window questions.

Guy asked: What is going on with Spurs? They bought loads of players at the start but haven't signed any since?

Nizaar answered: Last time I was in and around the Tottenham camp in Australia, Roberto De Zerbi told us he was planning a surprise "bomba" in attack.

Since then, nothing has crossed my path to suggest otherwise, but the forward market is a little stunted, with clubs needing to sign replacements before allowing players to leave.

I still think there is a very good chance Spurs sign Savinho from Manchester City, but Enzo Maresca is keen to add attacking talent himself before sanctioning any move.

There are also a host of other names floating around, including Liverpool's Cody Gakpo, but that second "bomba" could well arrive on deadline day, with many clubs waiting for more movement in the forward market. I think after two attacking signings, Spurs will be then done and content with their business.

  12. 'Things are looking up' - fan views on Spurs' turnaroundpublished at 15:42 BST 11 August

    Your Tottenham opinions banner

We asked for your views on the turnaround that Roberto de Zerbi has overseen at Tottenham after the club enjoyed more good news in extending the contract of Micky van de Ven.

Here are some of your comments:

Andy: I love that DeZerbi realised the priority was to improve our midfield, which was completely inept. Now we have a top-class trio in Madders, Tonali and Fernandes. All we need now is a striker who knows how to find the back of the net, then we will be a side to be reckoned with.

David: I feel great. I have a similar feeling with Roberto at the helm as I did when Pochettino arrived. He is articulate, positive and has a clear view as to the style of football he wants us to play. We still need a top class striker, but as things are we'll do OK.

Laurence: Things are looking up for us now no doubt about it but we still need to upgrade our striking options quickly because relying on Solanke and Richarlison to stay fit and score enough goals has proven to be mistaken. We invest in the wide areas but still have not got the required fire power up front.

Gary: As a Spurs fan, I have learned not to have any expectations. It's like waiting for Christmas day as a kid and getting excited only to realise Santa and his reindeer haven't bothered turning up.

Tottenham attacking midfielder James Maddison has allayed concerns of an injury setback, insisting he is "feeling good" ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The England international is yet to feature in any of the club's pre-season matches, after missing most of the 2025-26 campaign with an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained last August.

He made his return against Leeds United on 11 May and also made substitute appearances against Chelsea and Everton in the run-in.

Confirming his absence from Tottenham's pre-season tour in July, head coach Roberto de Zerbi said it was "not the right moment to take risks" with Maddison.

But the 29-year-old has now posted on Instagram to say there have been no fresh injury concerns.

"Feeling good after another good session today with the team," Maddison wrote. "Working so hard to be healthy and have a great year.

"Definitely haven't had any recurrence of any injury I've had before."

Tottenham will open their Premier League campaign at Brentford on Saturday, 22 August (17:30 BST).

  15. 'It's clear the direction the club wants to go in' - Van de Venpublished at 08:49 BST 11 August

Micky van de Ven of Tottenham Hotspur Image source, Getty Images

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven says he is "excited about what's to come" after signing a new long-term deal with Spurs.

The Netherlands international joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 originally on a six-year agreement until 2029.

BBC Sport understands Van de Ven was considering his future in north London before the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi in March, which proved crucial in the 25-year-old's decision to extend his stay.

"It's a special moment to sign a new deal and a proud moment for me and my family," said Van de Ven. "I've always loved Spurs, from the first day I stepped in here.

"I love the Club, I love the fans and I've developed really well here.

"It's clear the direction the club wants to go in and I want to be a part of it. I'm excited about what's to come."

Head Coach De Zerbi added: "Micky is one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us.

"He has the qualities, mentality and ambition that we want at Tottenham Hotspur, and I am very happy that he has decided to continue his journey with the club.

"We are building something strong here, and players like Micky are an important part of that future. His decision to sign a new contract shows his belief in what we are creating together."
