Tyrese Campbell found the net six times for the Blades last season

Sheffield United striker Tyrese Campbell has signed a new deal which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2028.

The 26-year-old joined the Blades in August 2024 and found the net 11 times in his first season with the club.

Last season was less productive in front of goal with the former Manchester City and Stoke player managing just six goals.

But manager Chris Wilder remains a big fan of the forward and has moved to tie him down to an extended stay at Bramall Lane.

Wilder told the club website, external: "Tyrese is an important player for us and our aim is to get him consistently back to the standards he set when he first walked through the door.

"A firing Tyrese Campbell is a major player for us and a major threat to the division, and if we can get him to those standards then there's no limit to what he can achieve here with us."

Sheffield United begin their Championship season with the visit of Birmingham to Bramall Lane on Saturday (17:30 BST).

Both teams began the campaign with a victory, the Blades winning 3-0 at Mansfield in the EFL Cup first round last weekend while Blues prevailed 1-0 at Swansea to reach round two.

Chris Wilder's side have lost five of their past six games on the opening day, including a 4-1 home humbling by Bristol City last season under Ruben Selles, while Chris Davies' men have drawn their past four curtain-raisers, with a 1-1 home draw against Ipswich last season.

    • Sheffield United are unbeaten in their past five league games against Birmingham City (W3 D2), having failed to win any of the previous five meetings (D3 L2).

    • Birmingham City have won just one of their past eight away league games against Sheffield United (D3 L4), with that victory coming on the opening day of the 2021-22 Championship season under Lee Bowyer (1-0).

    • Only Leicester City (32) dropped more points from winning positions in the EFL Championship last season than Sheffield United (29), while the Blades lost five of their final nine matches at Bramall Lane last term (W2 D2).

    • Only 20 of Birmingham City's 64 points in the EFL Championship were picked up away from home (31.3%), the lowest proportion in the competition last season.

    • In the EFL Championship last season, Sheffield United (11) and Birmingham (11.1) had the two lowest passes per defensive action values, while only Ipswich Town (67) recorded more shot-ending high turnovers than the Blades (59).

Sheffield United's game at Mansfield looked tricky on paper.

The same opponents knocked them out of the FA Cup in January and they'll be a tough outfit in League One this season.

The Blades, though, swept them aside 3-0. Effective, dominant and comfortably through to the second round of the EFL Cup.

It showed that United are still capable this year, even with Andre Brooks now playing for Norwich and Gus Hamer going to Coventry.

    But help is needed.

The finger needs to be pointed at the owners, COH Sports, after another summer that leaves more questions than answers.

Former owners, United World, are claiming they're owed £35m, with the prolific sports barrister Nick De Marco brought in to work on their case.

The current owners have played it all down – but what exactly is the situation?

Fans want to know what's going on. Is there money to spend?

The lack of clarity has meant that Chris Wilder has been left to address fan concerns. I had to ask him about the situation at the press conference last week. Not because I think he's well placed to reassure supporters – but simply because he's the only person at the club we can ask.

There's another bid in for Leicester defender Harry Souttar. If that deal is done for a good price, some of the concern will fade. It'd be a quality addition.

But in the aftermath of the Brooks and Hamer sales, only two new arrivals have come in – 34-year-old full-back Matt Doherty, who was a free agent after leaving Wolves, and forward Romelle Donovan, 19, on loan from Brentford.

The manager talks about waiting out the loan market. Where's the money from the sales?

The fans are doing their bit. They rocked up to Bochum, drank it dry and sang their hearts out.

I was at the meet-and-greet they did in a bar in the city. For two hours before the event began, the centre was serenaded by one United song after another.

The manager and players were welcomed as heroes. It was impressive and there was more of the same at the game.

The fans need a reason to believe. They need a reason to invest their faith in these owners. That happens by giving the manager the tools he needs to produce a good season.

If that isn't possible, it needs to be explained why. Not left for the manager to be put on the spot by journalists.

Is the money there? And if not, what then? What is the plan from the owners - short and long term?

It's not unusual for players like Brooks and Hamer to leave. One has gone for big money, the other had an expiring contract.

Yet this is a club that has become accustomed to being in the mix for the Premier League. It's very easy to drift into the status of Championship also rans. Once you end up there, you get stuck.

Everything must be done to avoid that happening.

It's the responsibility of the people running Sheffield United to avoid that fate.

It means getting the Souttar deal done, adding a replacement for Hamer and getting the extra body or two on top of that Wilder needs to enable the Blades to thrive.

  7. Blades expect Hamer to rejoin Coventry - Wilderpublished at 11:07 BST 10 August

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says he expects midfielder Gus Hamer to rejoin newly-promoted Premier League side Coventry City.

The 29-year-old has scored 22 goals and provided 29 assists in 123 games in all competitions for the Blades since arriving from the Sky Blues in 2023.

Hamer, who was the Championship player of the season in 2024-25, has been strongly linked with a return to Coventry where he previously spent three years and Wilder has confirmed it is "100%" likely to happen.

"We have to move on - everybody, me, supporters, players. He was a special player for us and a big player. The decision for Gus to go, there are a lot of sides to it," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I don't think it's always as straightforward as people think it is, and we don't want players to run their contracts down, it's pretty simple.

"Coventry were one of the only teams that had come in for him. We'll move on, we have to find a replacement to fill that position.

"Cal [O'Hare] and Ryan [One] have played out there [against Mansfield]. Cal played out there last year when Gus didn't play for us and we had some good performances and results, but I see him more central."

Wilder said United chief executive Steve Bettis and the owners "know that we have to replace Gus with a really top player".

"I personally think we're in a good place. We're maybe two or three players off being in a better place, so I'll always push to do that," Wilder added.

"We've lost Gus, Andre [Brooks] went, so we have to move on and we have done. If we want good loans, we're going to have to be really patient.

"Clubs want players to go out on permanent deals and when they know they can't go out on permanent deals, then the loans become available."

  9. Wilder confirms bid submitted for Hamer by former clubpublished at 11:46 BST 7 August

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has confirmed a formal bid has been submitted for Gustavo Hamer by one of his former clubs.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a return to Coventry City, who he made 132 appearances for before leaving for the Blades in 2023.

Hamer is in the last year of his current contract with Wilder confirming no new negotiations have taken place.

"I'm transparent," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield. "There has been a bid in for Gus and that is being discussed by the owners.

"Our policy as a football club is that we don't like players leaving on a free transfer, especially when we have paid a decent fee. I know his was a decent fee when we were in the Premier League.

"They are our thoughts as a club, and then there's Gus' point of view. It's about getting the right fee that is relevant to what we feel he is worth.

"Are we going to get back the money we paid for him? No because he's in the last year of his deal. But we're not going to get rolled over.

"The decision will have an input from me, but it's a decision for the board whether to accept the offer or not.

"Gus is ambitious and there's been a bid made by one of his former clubs where the owner really likes him, the manager speaking to him this week really likes him, and the supporters really like him.

"He has the opportunity to have a big increase on his salary, length on the contract, and going to a club where he's really highly thought of.

"If he wanted to stay here then we would have engaged in contract negotiations, but that hasn't been the case."

  11. 'Wilder was tight-lipped about Hamer future'published at 14:01 BST 2 August

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield reporter in Bochum

    Image caption,

Gus Hamer is entering the final year of his four-year Sheffield United contract

Sheffield United's game at VfL Bochum could be split into three parts.

In the early exchanges, the home side capitalised on some sloppy play from United - on and off the ball - to create, and miss, guilt-edged chances. Michael Cooper made some good saves and big striker Philipp Hofmann really should have scored in a one-on-one situation.

Eventually United settled down and the game played out in a typical pre-season style. By the end, the visitors took control and looked like they might score a couple of goals although the game ended goalless.

A lot of the good work came from Gus Hamer.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a return to Coventry City and it makes sense all round. It's Premier League football, with Premier League money, for a club the player knows well.

He's in the last year of his contract. United, if they don't anticipate being able to extend his deal, can cash in now rather than lose him for nothing in the future.

Despite all the speculation, Hamer played the full 90 minutes against Bochum. This added to an appearance at a meet-and-greet with fans in the city centre the night before with the rest of the Blades squad.

None of this means anything for the future and whether he will join Coventry. But he wouldn't be playing a full game against the 2 Bundesliga team if the framework for a transfer was done.

Going back to his performance, there were flashes of quality to remind you why he was the Championship's top player the season before last.

In particular his long range passes in the second half caught the eye. One picked out Callum O'Hare, who did brilliantly to control and shoot, only to be denied by Timo Horn in the home goal.

After the game, Chris Wilder was fairly tight-lipped about Hamer's future when asked what the latest was.

"Gus had a red-and-white shirt on today," Wilder said. "You've seen his actions, you've seen his attitude towards the game.

"He's not come to me and said he doesn't want to play. There has been interest, of course. That's out there. But as far as I'm concerned, he's a Sheffield United player."

The pursuit of Harry Souttar and Kalvin Phillips is continuing, with Wilder saying CEO Stephen Bettis is handling a possible deal for the Leicester City defender, whilst admitting he'd like to bring Phillips back.

He also played down any chance of Femi Seriki going out on a 'loan-to-buy' arrangement, after a reported offer from Italian side Sassuolo.

One of my lasting memories of this trip to Germany will be the press conference atmosphere after the game.

In Germany, apparently, you put both managers together on a top table. Bochum's Uwe Rosler requested a quick press conference so he and Wilder could share a beer. The Blades boss joked it was a new one for him, adding with a smile - "I'm not sure this will take off in England… me with an opposition manager, trying to trade blows".

It was different, that's for sure. It's the first time I've been tutted and sighed at from the press gallery. Multiple questions, it seems, are a no-no.

The local journalists didn't seem happy and Bochum's head of media even thanked them for their patience after I'd finished.

Sheffield United have sold Christian Nwachukwu to Sabah FC of Azerbaijan for an undisclosed fee.

But the 20-year-old now departs, having never made a senior appearance for the Blades.

  13. Hamer exit does not feel imminent ahead of Bochum gamepublished at 14:49 BST 31 July

    Rob Staton
BBC Radio Sheffield reporter in Bochum

Hamer has scored 18 goals in 114 league appearances for Sheffield United

Sheffield and Bochum have been twin cities for 76 years and there are definitely similarities between the two.

There's a cultural hub in the centre that feels a little like Fargate. There's also an industrial feel as you work your way through the streets from nearby Dortmund airport.

The red side of Sheffield are here for a friendly on Saturday. Nearly 2,000 Blades fans are expected to attend the game at Vonovia Ruhrstadion. Many were already in the city on Thursday night, with others camped in Cologne or Dusseldorf.

Much of the conversation among fans will focus on the future of midfielder Gustavo Hamer, amid rumours of interest from his former club Coventry - with some reports suggesting a deal is close.

There's undoubtedly something in all the talk yet the feeling on Friday morning at least was that an announcement was not imminent. Hamer, 29, who is in the last year of his contract, was training as usual and in one small-sided game intercepted a pass, cut away from a challenge and finished. One of his team-mates in the background shouted "star boy" as he returned to his position.

There will also be hope of some new additions sooner rather than later, with Leicester defender Harry Souttar a confirmed target. The 27-year-old definitely isn't in Bochum - you wouldn't miss him if he were - but the hope will be that he isn't too far from rejoining the Blades.

Striker Patrick Bamford, 32, isn't training in Germany as his partner prepares to give birth and another individual not here in Bochum is recent trialist Rabbi Matondo. The 25-year-old Wales international winger used to play 20 minutes up the road for Schalke but he hasn't travelled and that would seemingly suggest he isn't joining the Blades - but we'll check with manager Chris Wilder when he's made available to the media.

The players and staff on Thursday went to an Italian restaurant before the coaches indulged in a bit of karaoke. Goalkeeping coach Matt Duke revealed he 'd gone for Luther Vandross and Lionel Richie, while first-team coach Gary McSheffrey said his speciality was Eagle-Eye Cherry.

On a more serious note, McSheffrey discussed the way the coaches are connecting together to prepare the team for the new season.

"I think it's a really good staff. Everyone gets on with each other. There's no egos," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"Nobody's scared to say something to someone. There's a really good support network around the players. I have to say, the players have been spot on as well. Their attitude has been great."

McSheffrey also noted he's focusing on the attacking and wide players. Recent arrival Phil Jones is looking after the defenders while assistant boss Micky Collins is spending extra time with the midfielders.

  14. Phillips never recovered from Guardiola weight commentspublished at 14:55 BST 30 July

    Shamoon Hafez
    Manchester City reporter

Kalvin Phillips Image source, Getty Images

The stock of Kalvin Phillips, who is set to join Sheffield United again this summer, was at its highest when he was named England's player of the year at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

He continued that form with Leeds United before Manchester City decided to pay £45m to sign the player the following summer, but his Blues career never took off.

He played only one Premier League game before the 2022 World Cup, where he made just two substitute appearances for England.

Phillips returned that December to find himself out of City's squad for their first game back against Liverpool. Guardiola publicly accused him of being "overweight" and not fit enough to train or play.

He never really recovered from that.

The midfielder attempted to reignite his career but endured unsuccessful spells at West Ham and Ipswich over the next two seasons.

There was a brief return in a City shirt last September when he featured for the final seven minutes of a Carabao Cup tie victory at Huddersfield, but it proved to be a false dawn.

A return to Sheffield United again this summer is Phillips' latest attempt to revive his career.
