Norwich City boss Liam Manning says captain Kenny McLean is due to find out if he needs surgery for an ankle issue that could see him miss the start of the Championship season.

The midfielder has returned to the UK from the side's pre-season camp in the Netherlands and is set to see a specialist to see if he requires surgical intervention to resolve the injury.

"It's been on and off for a short period. It's flared up, we've tried to settle it and reintroduce him and he's not comfortable with it," Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"It doesn't seem to be going away with everything that's been tried."

If McLean were to miss the beginning of the season, it raises questions on who their new head coach would choose to wear the captain's armband.

Forward Josh Sargent took on the role during their 1-1 pre-season draw with Belgian side Zulte Waregem but has been linked with a move away, while the 39-year-old manager would "contemplate" giving it to 19-year-old midfielder Jacob Wright.

Manning is no stranger to young captaincy appointments, giving the armband to Jason Knight, 24, at his previous club Bristol City last season.

"I think [Jacob] has a terrific voice already for someone so young in the changing room," Manning said.

"At my previous club, I made someone quite young captain so it's not something I've not done before and afraid to do.

"At the minute, it's Kenny. Until we get close to the season, I'll make a decision nearer then."

Norwich City boss Liam Manning says it's only "natural" that forward Josh Sargent would attract attention from top flight clubs after a strong Championship campaign last season.

The Canaries have been in talks with recently promoted Premier League club Burnley as well as Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg for the US international however neither club have yet reached an agreement with the Championship side nor the player.

Though despite all the buzz around a potential transfer, Manning says he's been impressed with Sargent's professionalism.

"He's top, you see that, you see what he's done in the division, but the consequence of that is naturally he's going to be linked with clubs at a higher level," Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"We'll have to see how that pans out but I can't speak highly enough of how he's applied himself in training and how he's gone about it."

Another key player for the Canaries last season was Borja Sainz, whose 18 goals made him the third top scorer in the division.

However, Manning will not be able to utilise Sainz' goal scoring prowess next season after the Spaniard made the move to Portuguese side Porto for £14.25m on Sunday.

Though the former Bristol City boss isn't looking back to see what he's missed out on.

"It's a terrific deal for the club and from that perspective - you only have to look historically how it's been reinvested - it allows us to improve the team," Manning added.

"There's still a few faces we need to add and will add."

Norwich could hijack Watford's move for Metz attacker Pape Diallo.

The 21-year-old Senegal international has been on the verge of a move to Watford but the Canaries are one of a number of clubs considering an 11th-hour offer.

Diallo scored seven goals for Metz in Ligue 2 last season and regularly plays on the left a role where Norwich will need a replacement for Porto-bound Borja Sainz.

He moved to France from Senegalese club Generation Foot in 2023 and has scored 12 goals in 63 games in all competitions for the Maroons.

Diallo helped Metz finish third last season as they were promoted to Ligue 1, beating Reims in the play-offs.

"The 20th of September is already in my diary, you'll be pleased to know, so if I can't get a ticket, I'll come knocking on your door."

Norwich City defender Jack Stacey has signed a new two-year contract with the option for a further 12 months.

The 29-year-old signed from Bournemouth in May 2023 and has made 87 league appearances for the Canaries, scoring three goals.

Stacey cost Bournemouth £4m from Luton in 2019 and he featured in the Premier League as well as helping the south coast club regain their top-flight status after relegation in 2020.

"The two years I've been here, I've really enjoyed playing in the stadium, playing for the fans," Stacey told the club website., external

"But I've not achieved what I wanted to so I'm excited to commit for a longer period of time so we can try to achieve the goals we've set for the team and for myself."

Norwich start their Championship season at home Millwall on 9 August.
