Hartlepool United have signed goalkeeper Nathan Fisher on a free transfer.

The 21-year-old, who was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season, has signed a one-year contract at Victoria Park with the option of a further year.

It comes a day after Pools signed fellow goalkeeper Max Merrick on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Harrogate Town have signed Middlesbrough defender Archie Baptiste for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal.

The 20-year-old joined Boro last June after coming through Tottenham's academy and made one Championship appearance.

He ended the season on loan with Rochdale but did not feature for them.

"He's eager to get that opportunity to play men's football and both parties feel it's a good fit, so hopefully he can progress and do well for himself," head of player recruitment Lloyd Kerry told the club website., external

Middlesbrough are finalising a deal to sign USA international midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, 25, from MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps for a fee in the region of £1.5m. (The Athletic - subscription required), external

Burnley have made a loan-to-buy offer to sign former Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath from MLS side Atlanta United. The 27-year-old Ivorian left Boro for £22.5m in February 2025 after scoring 27 goals in 59 Championship games. (Alan Nixon - subscription required), external

Blackburn Rovers face stiff competition from a string of Championship clubs to sign Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough. However, Boro are not expected to explore another deal for the 31-year-old. (Lancashire Telegraph), external

Middlesbrough should have plenty of "optimism" for the potential of new signing Will Lankshear, says BBC Radio Oxford's Jerome Sale.

The 21-year-old striker joined Boro from Tottenham on Tuesday for a potentially club-record fee after catching the eye during his loan spell at Oxford United last season.

In fact, he left such a good impression at the Kassam that some believe he could be in the mix to don the number nine shirt for England.

"I think that's a longish shot but I think there is a high ceiling for him," Sale said. "For plenty of reasons, not least his talent but also his work ethic is insane.

"Sometimes you can look at his sheer physical presence and feel he might be the guy to go and ping the ball to if you're looking for an equaliser at the last minute - but he's not that player.

"He's actually more of a Harry Kane type player who wants to drop and get involved even though he's got the physical size. He's not super quick but he's got the speed of thought, again like Kane, that makes up for that.

"I just think he'll be a really fun watch."

Morgan Rogers will have a medical with Chelsea on Monday after returning from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.

Rogers, who was previously on the books of Manchester City, joined Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal worth £8m, rising to £15m.

Due to a clause giving Middlesbrough 20% of any profit made by Villa for selling Rogers in the future, the Championship club will earn at least £20.4m from his transfer to Chelsea, depending on how many add-ons have been triggered at Villa Park.

Boro believe it is also an English record for the largest transfer sell-on fee.

Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery's men and was part of the team that won the Europa League last season.

He has made 22 senior England appearances, scoring once, and featured in seven games at this summer's World Cup.

Rogers is the second Villa midfielder to depart this week following Youri Tielemans' £35m move to Manchester United, but they have brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi in a deal worth more than £50m from Freiburg and lined up Wolves' Joao Gomes for £38m.

Camilo Duran scored as Celtic drew 1-1 with Middlesbrough in Saturday's pre-season friendly.

David Strelec put Boro in front with a turn and finish.

Forward Duran, Celtic's only new summer signing so far, struck high into the net to bring the hosts level before half-time.

As well as Duran, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has agreed a new deal after a short-term contract last term, started.

International midfielders Arne Engels and Reo Hatate, who have been linked with moves, came on in the second half for Martin O'Neill's side.

Middlesbrough's £5m move to sign Hull City forward Kyle Joseph had stalled last week but the deal is now back on with paperwork being finalised and the 24-year-old is expected to link up with his new team-mates at their training camp in Portugal later this week. (Mail), external

Seven English Football League players went out of the World Cup over the course of the weekend.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez and West Ham defender Edson Alvarez were in the Mexico team which lost 3-2 to England in a thrilling last-16 contest at the Azteca Stadium in the early hours of Monday morning.

Jimenez netted three times for his nation at the tournament, including a 69th-minute penalty against the Three Lions, but will now return to Molineux to prepare for the Championship season after signing from Fulham this summer.

Southampton forward Cyle Larin and Norwich City midfielder Ali Ahmed both featured for Canada in their last-16 encounter with Morocco on Saturday, but could not prevent the co-hosts from suffering a 3-0 defeat.

Larin scored two goals in the group stages for Canada to help them progress to the knockouts for the first time in their history, while Middlesbrough defender Alfie Jones was also part of the squad but did not play.

Leicester City duo Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu played for Ghana in their 1-0 loss to Colombia in the last 32 on Saturday.

Boro legend Craig Hignett believes the move to Everton is a "great" one for midfielder Hayden Hackney - but it will also do plenty for Middlesbrough's transfer ambitions this season too.

Everton have paid £16m plus potential add-ons for the Boro youth product and Middlesbrough may also have residuals this season from a possible move for Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers, who joined the Premier League club from the Riverside in February 2024.

While former forward Hignett says Hackney was arguably Middlesbrough's best player last season, he thinks the money gained from his transfer will help the side strengthen their weaknesses in attack.

"If Boro would have got promoted, that [the fee for Hackney] might have been a different story, but I'd take that if I were Boro," Hignett told BBC Radio Tees.

"Hopefully Morgan Rogers will go and we might get a few quid more. I know we got some money for Djed Spence as well so the kitty is looking pretty good.

"Last season was such an exciting season but ultimately it was a bit of a let down and I think quite early on, we all knew where Boro were struggling. So hopefully, with the money they've got, they can remedy that this year and have a good go."

We asked you for your thoughts on Hayden Hackney's move to Everton and it seems to be a departure on good terms.

Here is a selection of what you had to say:

Paul: £16 million for the Championship player of the season? I appreciate he would have only had one year left [on his deal] but still! I'm assuming there will also be some beneficial future clauses for us.

Moving forward we can hopefully replace him with someone creative and plenty of knowhow but at a similar sort of age. We need to get a big, strong, tall striker in too. Too many pointless crosses last season with no one there to get on the end of them.

I'm hoping Hellberg gets the players he wants (hopefully some proper pace on the flanks) and we go again!

Nate: Goes with no hard feelings from me. Have loved having him here but he absolutely deserves to be playing in the PL.

Replace probably isn't the right word, but the funds should help the whole squad with the right buys. Quietly looking forward to the season (depending on the transfer window).

Dan: Gutted he's gone, really enjoyed watching him last season, especially his goals against QPR and Norwich.

Big case of the 'what ifs' but if we had added a striker in January and Hayden had not got injured, he would be in the Prem with Boro. Was [always] going to leave after failing to get promotion, wish him all the best at Everton - they are getting a very good player.

Need to spend the money for him sensibly but not sure there is an obvious like-for-like player we could get, especially with his connection to the Boro.

Martin: It was inevitable after missing out on promotion. He is passionate about Boro and maybe stayed with us a season too long, out of loyalty. Can't do anything other than say thanks and wish him good luck with his new club.

Hayden Hackney is a Middlesbrough man no more.

The 24-year-old midfielder progressed through Boro's youth ranks to become a key player for the side but has now departed for the Premier League with Everton.

West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville saw his shot saved during a dramatic penalty shootout against Morocco to knock the Netherlands out of the World Cup on Tuesday.

Summerville had provided the assist for Cody Gakpo's opener in the 72nd minute, but Morocco equalised in the 91st to force extra time.

Both sides had missed two previous penalties before the 24-year-old stood up to take the fifth for the Dutch side; however Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied him, and Ismael Saibari then sealed the win for their opponents.

Burnley's Lyle Foster will also be heading home after South Africa succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Canada.

However, the win for the North American side does mean three English Football League players have made it through to the round of 16 in the World Cup.

Southampton striker Cyle Larin and Ali Ahmed of Norwich City both featured for Canada in the group stage but were unused substitutes for Sunday's knock-out match alongside Middlesbrough's Alfie Jones.

Canada next faces Morocco in Texas on Saturday at 18:00 BST.
