England's strength is their front line. With the midfield overwhelmed, England have to rely on their front line consisting of Eze, Kane, Saka/Rogers, and Bellingham. The pair of Anderson and Gordon can give England peace of mind. Can England's front line win UEFA Euro 2028? Yes, it can.

Croatia have not won a game against England since beating the Three Lions in the 2018 World Cup semi-final.

In the four games played since 2018, Croatia drew with England once and lost three times.

The last fixture was during the 2026 World Cup group stage match, where England beat Croatia 4-2.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel's apparent lack of trust in Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of the defining features - and a constant narrative - of his time in charge.

The 27-year-old right-back has won a Premier League title at Liverpool then moved to Real Madrid since he last started for England, selected as a left-back by interim manager Lee Carsley when scoring in a 3-1 Nations League win in Finland in October 2024.

He was ignored for England's World Cup squad last summer, despite right-back being a cursed role for Tuchel, making it appear that whatever questions the German had about that position, Alexander-Arnold was never going to be the answer.

So Tuchel's decision to recall Alexander-Arnold for this four-game Nations League camp came as a surprise, so emphatically had he been marginalised by England.

It was against this backdrop that Alexander-Arnold became the ninth right-back used by Tuchel in 24 games when he finally got his start against Czech Republic in Prague as England tried to recover from the 3-2 loss to World Cup holders Spain at Wembley.

And, with perhaps something to prove according to Tuchel, Alexander-Arnold did exactly that in one world-class moment that might convince his coach to train his sights on what he can do rather than what he cannot.

It is time, in other words, for Tuchel to offer Alexander-Arnold some trust.

  10. Palmer a 'victim' of 'sick' schedule, says PFA chiefpublished at 13:24 BST

Cole Palmer is the "victim" of a "sick" system that is expecting too much of players, according to Professional Footballers' Association chief executive Maheta Molango.

Molango said Palmer's recent withdrawal from the England squad highlighted a match calendar that is unsustainable and has become the "survival of the fittest".

Five players – Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento, external, external - pulled out of Thomas Tuchel's squad ahead of the latest international window.

"When England see five players who need to withdraw when the single most proud moment a player has is to be called up for the national team, you just ask yourself, what's wrong about the industry?" Molango said at the Fifpro performance summit in London.

"You see people like Cole Palmer, someone who would have played four consecutive summers in a row had he gone to the World Cup, and you wonder why is he missing?

"He's missing because he's a victim of the calendar and that's something that needs to absolutely trigger the alarm bells."

The PFA and global players' union Fifpro have repeatedly warned about the impact of an increasingly congested calendar on player welfare.

In response to Palmer withdrawing from England's squad for "load management", Tuchel said the forward "misses too many opportunities", external.

Alex Scott says his aim is be part of England's midfield for the 2028 European Championship.

England, along with Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, will host the tournament in two years time.

"For me now, it's just to keep myself in the squad as much as possible, keep performing for my club and put myself in the best position to get called up every window," Scott told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"Then push these boys that have been starting for the past few years and in tournaments for England.

"I mean, that's the ultimate dream, the Euros in two years now, a home Euros.

"So for me, everything will be put in and focused on that and trying to impress as much as I can whenever I come away and put myself in the best possible picture to be in that Euro squad."

Scott knows breaking into England's midfield will not be easy, competing with players including Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson.

"I've got quite a bit of work to do to get on their level," he said.

"I know Elliott pretty well from youth teams, we won the Euros together last year, and obviously Dec and Jude are two of the best players from England. So I'm learning off them and speaking to them as much as possible."

  13. Why is Croatia v England behind closed doors?published at 13:20 BST

Croatia v England (Sat, 17:00 BST)

    Jonty Colman
    BBC Sport Journalist

The game will take place in front of a reduced crowd in the same venue in which the two sides met, also behind closed doors, in a 0-0 draw in October 2018.

The limited capacity is because of crowd disturbances involving Croatia fans during a Nations League match against France in March 2025.

Seven fans were taken into custody on suspicion of making Nazi salutes during the match, and released without prosecution because of a lack of evidence.

In their section of Stade de France, where that match took place, Croatia supporters also set off fireworks.

On top of that, Croatia were also prohibited from having travelling supporters in their 2-1 win in the Czech Republic last Saturday.
