Of all United's squad, Fernandes is the one worshipped by fans.

But after the 'will-he, won't-he' debate around the 31-year-old's future last summer when the massive offer from Saudi Pro-League side Al-Hilal emerged, United's resolve could be about to be tested again.

Italian heavyweights Juventus and AC Milan, plus Galatasaray, are all understood to be keen on the Portugal playmaker, who has a £57m release clause available to overseas clubs.

It remains to be seen how United react if a bid is received. Last December, Fernandes admitted to being "hurt" at being told by United officials it was up to him whether he wanted to accept the Al-Hilal offer.

Now, his contract has entered its final year - there is an option to extend by a further season - and, as yet, there is no agreement over a new one.

It is thought Fernandes' preference is to stay at United, potentially for the remainder of his career. On the club's previous visit to the Republic of Ireland in April, he said he wants to compete for trophies. That situation is understood still to be the case.

But at a time when United are attempting to keep a lid on their wage bill, Fernandes could justifiably point to his contribution as being worthy of a significant salary, as Marcus Rashford returns to the club and is currently the highest earner.

United's hierarchy may find themselves with a problem that won't easily be resolved.

Certainly, Carrick won't want to lose the former Sporting man.

Enzo Fernandez returned to Chelsea training on Tuesday after flying in from his holiday in Ibiza.

There are again rumours that Manchester City could make a move for him.

Chelsea's stance has remained consistent. Their asking price remains £120m should any club want to sign him, acknowledging that the Argentina international is open to a move.

However, Chelsea will not budge on that valuation and both Xabi Alonso and the club as a whole would be happy to reintegrate him into the squad this season.

Chelsea have set a Friday deadline for offers of £120m or more from clubs interested in midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentina international, 25, has faced uncertainty over his future at Stamford Bridge since March, when he first raised the possibility of a move to Real Madrid.

Around that time, his agent Javier Pastore publicly stated his client was underpaid and wanted to leave following a difficult season in which Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League and ended the campaign without a trophy after losing the FA Cup final to Manchester City.

Real Madrid have since said they have "no intention" of signing Fernandez, leaving the only known potential suitors as Manchester City, whose new boss Enzo Maresca left Chelsea midway through last season.

It remains unclear whether City would be willing to meet the player's valuation, with the Etihad outfit also known to be targeting Lille's Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi.

Chelsea have set a deadline of 17:00 BST on Friday for any offers for Enzo Fernandez and are expected to stand firm on their £120m price tag, even though they signed him for £107m from Benfica in 2023.

The deadline is intended to bring an end to uncertainty before the start of the season, having given Fernandez and any interested clubs around 60 days to complete a deal at what Chelsea consider a fair price.

New manager Xabi Alonso has spoken to Fernandez about his future, but has declined to disclose details of their conversation.

It is understood Chelsea have made it clear they are willing to fully reintegrate Fernandez into the squad and allow him to continue as a key player.

He scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 54 appearances for the club last season. He then helped Argentina reach the World Cup final, where he was sent off as they lost to Spain 1-0.

Fernandez returned to training with Chelsea this week for the first time under Alonso.

Time to turn our attention to another London-based club.
