Summary

  1. 'Good win' for Linfield against Reds - Oliverpublished at 14:30 BST 22 August

    Fri: Linfield 1-0 Cliftonville

Linfield assistant coach Ross Oliver: "It was a good win for us. It's always important to get three points on the board at the start of the season and last week as well.

"The first half was a bit cagey from both teams. There was a lot of possession for them and a lot of possession for us without testing either goalkeeper.

"The second half became a bit more to and fro. We started the second half well and we got our goal in that period of play."

Cliftonville boss Jim Magilton: "We concede from a set piece which is one of their strengths. We did ok up to that point.

"It's a poor goal to concede. It's a cardinal sin and you don't allow that to happen, even though the wasn't an awful lot in the game.

"Neither goalkeeper really got worked. It's a game you don't lose through poor marking."

  2. Late Larne double seals first-leg win over 10-man Red Impspublished at 14:25 BST 22 August

Larne are well placed to reach the league stage of the Uefa Conference League for the second time in three years after they beat 10-man Lincoln Red Imps 2-0 in the first leg of their play-off tie in Gibraltar on Thursday.

Paul O'Neill came off the bench to head home the opening goal on 84 minutes, with two other substitutes involved in the build-up.

Conor McKendry provided the cross and James Simpson headed the ball into the path of O'Neill, who applied the finish.

Kevin O'Hara added the second two minutes into stoppage time with a cool finish into the corner after O'Neill broke clear and laid the ball off to his team-mate.

The hosts had Yussef Flalhi Idrissi sent-off after 28 minutes of the game at the Europa Point Stadium after his initial yellow card was replaced by a red after an intervention by the Video Assistant Referee [VAR official].

The Spaniard was involved in a coming together with Larne midfielder Sean Graham and after the referee was called over to view the incident on the monitor, he produced a red, seemingly for a punch being thrown.

The Irish Premiership champions will have high hopes of finishing the job in next week's second leg at their Inver Park home.

    Fri: Linfield 1-0 Cliftonville

Linfield inflicted a first defeat of the season on Cliftonville in a closely fought affair at Windsor Park.

Ethan McGee's header 10 minutes after the restart was enough to secure back-to-back wins for David Healy's side in south Belfast.

Joe Gormley came closest to levelling for the visitors late in the second half, who couldn't find a way past the resolute Linfield defence.

  4. Kane scores on 500th appearance as Glens beat Ballymenapublished at 14:15 BST 22 August

    Fri: Ballymena United 0-2 Glentoran

Glentoran scored twice in the last 10 minutes to record a 2-0 Irish Premiership victory over Ballymena United at the Showgrounds.

Aaron McEneff's Panenka-style penalty with nine minutes left broke the deadlock in a game which looked to be heading towards a scoreless stalemate.

Skipper Marcus Kane, who was making his 500th Irish League appearance, wrapped up the points for the Glens in stoppage time with a powerful near-post finish.

It was the perfect response for Glentoran to their defeat by rivals Linfield last weekend but it's now back-to-back defeats for Ballymena since their impressive opening day win at Windsor Park.
