Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on the transfer window: "It's a very exciting part of the season as well. When a lot of things happen, it creates excitement, there is an opportunity as well to evolve. There is a good way to understand what every player is feeling and we are trying to do maximum to end up in the next 13-14 days in the best possible condition to compete for every possible competition.

"It is always the case, there is an opportunity to go both ways [players out and in], we have to see how the market responds and what as a club, we can do.

On potential singings: "You know I am not going to talk about an individual but what I can obviously tell you is the ambition of the club. It is big that we want to improve the squad, we want to evolve the squad, in order to achieve. We have detected some areas that they can be a strength in, that is what we are trying to do."

Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.

BBC Sport understands that talks are at an exploratory stage at the moment but sources suggest a deal for the 23-year-old is possible.

The potential move comes after Arsenal held further talks over a transfer for Aston Villa defender and England team-mate Ezri Konsa.

Villa want a fee of around £60m for Konsa but Arsenal value the 28-year-old closer to £40m.

Quansah would fit the profile of player that the Gunners are looking for, as he can play both centre-back and right-back.

But it remains to be seen if their interest in the former Liverpool defender is a tactic by the club in their pursuit of Konsa.

Arsenal head into the new campaign looking to set the tone early after an up‑and‑down pre‑season and a fairly quiet start to the summer transfer window.

Mikel Arteta’s side started off pre-season with big victories over MK Dons and Girona, before losing to Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund, ending with a 1-1 draw Serie A outfit, Como.

As expected, Enzo Maresca was pretty tight-lipped on specific individual players but a body language expert might have fun interpreting his response to my question on whether he expected Manchester City to do any transfer business today, given Chelsea's 17:00 BST deadline for any bids for Enzo Fernandez.

"Not today to be honest," he said, with a little smile.

The smile could mean nothing, or could mean that while City may not submit any bids today, it isn't to say that one wasn't put in a day or so earlier.

Either way, it is going to be interesting what transpires over the course of the next 24 hours.
