This is a big one at the top end of the Championship between two teams in fine fettle.

West Bromwich Albion are riding high after their 3-1 win at West Ham on Saturday - a third win in their past four games (D1).

That result lifted the Baggies to fourth and within two points of the automatic promotion places.

Southampton arrive in similarly strong form with four wins from their previous five outings (D1), having thumped QPR 4-1 at the weekend.

Saints would indeed be in the top two had they not been deducted four points for the Spygate scandal - they instead sit in fifth place but are just three points behind second-placed Swansea.

After an emphatic response on Saturday to their hammering at QPR a week earlier, opportunity knocks for Swansea City this evening.

Victory will take them back to the top of the table for 24 hours at least with rivals Middlesbrough not playing until tomorrow.

But Portsmouth are unbeaten in their last five games and are eyeing a play-off place themselves so will be no pushovers.

This week their boss John Mousinho became Pompey's longest-serving manager since Alan Ball's first spell in charge here in the late 1980's.

The cliche is true, there are no easy games in the Championship.

In-form Pompey welcome one of the Championship's best travellers in Swansea for an intriguing game at Fratton Park.

The Blues are on the fringes of the play-off places in 11th after going five games unbeaten and have taken 10 points from their past four home matches.

Second-placed Swansea will seek to stay ahead of the congested chasing pack by adding to the 12 points they have already won on the road this season, though they did lose 5-0 at QPR on their last trip across the Severn Bridge.

Pompey would be well advised to make a fast start, the Swans have only allowed 10 goals in six away games but four of those have come in the opening 10 minutes and only two after half-time.

  5. Blues blazing a trailpublished at 19:36 GMT 3 November

    Birmingham v Millwall (20:00 GMT)

These may well be heady times for Birmingham City.

From the trough of relegation to League One in 2024 they have rebuilt under Chris Davies and, after a season of adjustment this might be their first realistic tilt at a Premier League return for some time.

Four wins from their past six means only leaders Middlesbrough have taken more points in the same period while a nine-match unbeaten run at St Andrew's is giving visitors something to think about.

Millwall fans probably know how their Birmingham counterparts are feeling having come so close to automatic promotion last season before losing out in the play-offs.

A lengthy injury list has not helped Alex Neil this time around but they are within striking distance of the top eight and Saturday's 4-1 win over Derby will have restored some confidence as they head to the Midlands.

Paris Maghoma is doing what we want from him. No one has really made themselves undroppable in the number 10 position and he did well in that Charlton game.

He's a player with bags of potential, it's up to him.

There's no reason why he can't become a Carrow Road hero.

  7. Reeling Rams seek redemption against chirpy Canariespublished at 19:32 GMT 3 November

    Derby v Norwich (19:45 GMT)

Derby boss John Eustace on the sidelinesImage source, Shutterstock

When a manager tells you he is going through the toughest period of his career, you know your team is in trouble.

Derby County's 4-1 surrender at Millwall on Saturday made it just one win from their opening 13 matches and that victory came on the road so Pride Park is hardly home, sweet home as they welcome Norwich this evening.

"It's been the toughest three months, definitely, through recruitment and personnel that are available to us," Eustace told BBC East Midlands Today.

"But it's part of the job and I have to get my head around that and try to find solutions."

If Derby fans are looking for hope then they could do worse than take a peek at tonight's opponents.

Norwich's come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Watford at the weekend made it back-to-back league wins for only the second time this season having lost their previous five - from despair to delight in the blink of an eye.

"This is a really clear statement about the unity in this group and how hungry they are to dig out results," said boss Philippe Clement.

Redemption could be just around the corner for the Rams while defeat may signal a long winter ahead.

  8. Will Potters stay on a roll at Rovers?published at 19:30 GMT 3 November

    Blackburn v Stoke (19:45 GMT)

Stoke players, wearing their red and white home shirt, celebrate a goal against PrestonImage source, Shutterstock

Blackburn have been much-improved this season compared to last under returning boss Tony Mowbray.

Rovers are five points and six places better off after 13 games than they were in 2025-26, even if they did suffer a 4-0 humbling at Swansea three days ago.

Despite that defeat, Blackburn have still won three of their past five games and will hope to provide a sterner test for Stoke at Ewood Park tonight than they did for the Swans.

The Potters have failed to mount a meaningful promotion challenge in the eight seasons since they were relegated from the Premier League, but will hope this might be the year.

Mark Robins has his side performing well, with seven wins from 10 league games since they lost their opening three, and Stoke start the evening in seventh - just three points off the top two.

  9. Will lack of sting cost Hornets boss Dionisi?published at 19:27 GMT 3 November

    Watford v Lincoln (19:45 GMT)

Here we are again with Watford Football Club. Another head coach coming under pressure with talk of a potential change at Vicarage Road starting to bubble up once more unless Alessio Dionisi can turn things around.

The Hornets threw away a two-goal lead at Norwich on Saturday to lose 3-2 and suffer their sixth defeat in their past seven games (W1).

Watford are just two points above the relegation zone and could end the night in the bottom three if Burnley win at QPR.

They welcome a Lincoln City side who are 16th in the Championship and are holding their own fairly well in their first season in the second tier since 1961.

The Imps lost 3-1 at home to Birmingham last time out but had drawn 2-2 at Millwall and thumped Burnley 4-1 before that.

  10. R's trying to keep Clarets in the basementpublished at 19:24 GMT 3 November

    QPR v Burnley (19:45 GMT)

Burnley will seek to climb out of the relegation zone with their first win under Fabio Celestini this evening but face a tough test at QPR.

The R's went down 4-1 at Southampton on Saturday but remain within six points of the automatic promotion places and have won their past two home games by an aggregate score of 9-1.

Celestini began life at Turf Moor with a goalless draw against Portsmouth on Saturday but will hope to pick up just a second league win of the season at a ground where the Clarets have taken 15 points from their past eight visits.

Rangers have failed to score in five of their past six games against Burnley overall but will be boosted by the fact the visitors have kept only one clean sheet in their past 25 away games and will be desperate for another.

    Charlton v Bolton (19:45 GMT)

A big game in the basement battle at The Valley where free-falling Charlton and Bolton lock horns.

Both sides enjoyed their day in the sun at Wembley over the past 18 months, winning the League One play-off final to earn promotion, but their ambitions for this campaign will purely be survival.

The Addicks began this season in blistering style and three straight wins had them setting the early pace, however they are winless in the 10 league games since August, taking just five points, and have lost the past three straight, shipping eight goals and scoring only once.

They lie 20th, below the Trotters on goal difference, five points clear of the drop zone, after Wanderers were stunned 3-2 at home by Bristol City on Saturday, off the back of a 5-1 humbling by Middlesbrough.

Steven Schumacher's men have however picked up seven points from their past three games on the road and will have an eye on heaping more pressure on Nathan Jones.

  12. Time for Preston to panic?published at 19:20 GMT 3 November

Preston v Sheffield United (19:45 GMT)

The fewest points in the Championship, lowest scorers and a change of manager which has brought just one point from his five games in charge so far.

It is not pretty reading for Preston fans with North End already six points adrift of safety and, having sacked Paul Heckingbottom in September, his replacement Graham Alexander is finding turning the ship around is not going to be easy.

"Confidence is low without a shadow of a doubt. But I think it'd be a strange thing if I said the players are really confident in everything because it's a results-based business," Alexander told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"We want to win. The players train to win every single day. We're not doing that consistently but you can still make a choice to think differently and think positively."

Sheffield United are probably not the opponents you would pick when you are in trouble as Chris Wilder's side are beginning to show signs of getting it together with three wins from their past five games.

"I asked our players to ignite the fanbase, and I think they did with their intent and the approach," said Wilder after Friday's win over Wrexham.

Preston's season is in danger of going up in flames unless they can also find something to ignite them.

    • Thirteen games was the unlucky number for Nuno at West Ham, but can Championship specialist Scott Parker get the Hammers back on track in the promotion race if he is installed as new Irons boss?
    • Swansea suffered back-to-back losses but can return to the top with a win tonight... are they here to stay in the fight for the Premier League?

It might only be November but there's a huge fixture at the top of League One this evening which could go some way into deciding how the title battle progresses.

Top-of-the-table Huddersfield Town, led by Martin Drury (above), meet fourth-placed Luton Town with the two teams separated by five points.

This fixture is a game in hand for both sides and, should the Terriers pull off victory - which would be their ninth of the season - it would send them five points clear of second-placed Stockport County while a reverse result for Jack Wilshere's side will mean they will move level on points with their fellow Hatters.

Elsewhere in the third tier, mid-table Mansfield Town travel to struggling Wigan Athletic with the Latics two points adrift in the relegation zone - however they come into this match off the back of a 3-2 win against Bromley and will hope to exit the bottom four if they can pull off another victory tonight.

There is just the one fixture in League Two this evening as two of this seasons strugglers take each other on.

Northampton Town welcome an Oldham Athletic side who suffered a morale-denting loss to bottom side Crawley Town at the weekend but with both looking over their shoulder at the bottom two, tonight would be the perfect time to snatch a much-needed three points.

They might not be in action until tomorrow night but it's been a big day for West Ham.

The Hammers could drop out of the Championship play-off places this evening after back-to-back home defeats and this morning parted ways with boss Nuno Espirito Santo, with Scott Parker lined up to take over at the London Stadium.

The Irons travel to Cardiff on Wednesday night and, whoever is in the dugout, we'll have live text coverage of that game, along with Middlesbrough's trip to Wrexham and Bristol City v Wolves, right here.

    Championship table

Thirteen games gone, 33 to go, even in the Championship you can normally tell quite a bit by now, but 2026-27 looks like it will be a bit different.

Six points separate the top eight... six points separate third and 14th and six points separate 15th from 22nd.

These three-game weeks can make a huge difference, especially leading up to an international break.

Middlesbrough, Wolves and West Ham are not in action until Wednesday which means Swansea have the chance to return to the top of the table with a win at Portsmouth.

West Brom and Southampton will seek to steal a march on their rivals when they face each other and Birmingham and Stoke will also seek to strengthen their hand as they host Millwall and visit Blackburn respectively.

Burnley are aiming to haul Watford into the drop zone by winning at QPR and hoping Lincoln do them a favour at Vicarage Road while Derby entertain Norwich and Preston welcome Sheffield United hoping to claw themselves closer to the pack.

    Should be a fascinating night.
