The European question is certainly going to be put to Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca.

It will be interesting to see how he responds to it.

The question of how to punish Manchester City if their appeal fails, and when those sanctions might be metered out, is a complicated one that could have immediate ramifications for this season's league and cup competitions...

One issue that is concerning senior figures within English football is what happens if Manchester City are punished this season but manage to win the Champions League?

That would mean City could end up playing in the Champions League next season even if they are relegated from the Premier League for breaching financial regulations.

The scenario centres around the possibility that by winning the Champions League, Enzo Maresca's side would earn qualification for the competition as titleholders - regardless of their status in the English domestic pyramid.

BBC Sport has been told that there is no automatic mechanism to remove City from a European competition they qualify for on sporting merit.

  3. Man City charges - what happens next?published at 11:46 BST

Man City v Paris St-Germain (Wed, 20:00 BST)

As we know, an independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges related to inflating sponsorship revenue by £830m by using sham contracts, as well as hiding other expenses worth an additional £90m.

Without this, the independent commission said, City would have failed the profit and sustainability rules in all nine seasons between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

City continue to strenuously deny any wrongdoing - calling the outcome a "Premier League conspiracy" - and at the start of this month lodged an appeal against the verdict.

We now face a waiting game to see how that appeal pans out before any sanctions can be decided.

What these sanctions might be is open to conjecture, but they could include a huge fine, a transfer embargo and/or a points deduction for one year or over a series of seasons.

The club could even face immediate expulsion from the Premier League - whether that's at the end of a season or even midway through it.

Check out the video below, in which a BBC Sport panel discusses the issue of possible sanctions against City...

I'm at Manchester City's pre-match news conference where it is expected to be standing room only when Enzo Maresca speaks to the media before Wednesday's Champions League showdown with European champions Paris St-Germain.

This will be City's first home game since they were found guilty of charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial rules between 2009-10 and 2017-18.

It has been confirmed Pep Guardiola, who won 20 trophies during his 10 years in charge before leaving at the end of last season, will be at the game.

Will he be in the Manchester City dressing room to give the players a rallying call on his return? Will he walk onto the pitch to address fans before kick-off?

Early leaders Paris St-Germain have won back-to-back Champions League titles and start this season with a clear aim - to become just the fourth club to win the European title (European Cup or Champions League) in three consecutive seasons.

Real Madrid have done it twice (five times in a row in the 1950s and three times from 2016-18), while both Bayern Munich and Ajax managed it in the 1970s.

However, the French champions started their domestic season slowly, failing to win any of their first three league matches, but Luis Enrique's side have since picked up to win their last four in all competitions.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have started the season with eight consecutive victories, including an opening 2-0 win at Porto in the Champions League.

That fine form has come despite the club being found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial regulations.

Should City continue to win on the pitch, that could raise serious concerns both on the domestic front and in Europe...

  8. How the table stands - Bottom halfpublished at 11:39 BST

    Champions League

Here's a look at the bottom half.

As in previous seasons in this new[ish] format, the top eight teams at the end of the league phase go straight through to the last-16 knockout stage.

Sides that finish from ninth to 24th enter a knockout play-off round, which consists of one knockout tie, played over two legs.

And the bottom 12 teams drop out of European competition all together - there is no parachuting into the latter stages of the Europa League, as was the case in the previous format.

Bottom half of the Champions League table - 16 teams are yet to get off the mark after losing their opening game. Slovan Bratislava and Bodo/Glimt are rock bottom with a goal difference of -5
  9. How the table stands - Top halfpublished at 11:37 BST

    Champions League

All five English sides in this season's Champions League started positively, winning their opening game.

It's holders Paris St-Germain who lead the way, however, sitting top of the fledgling table courtesy of goals scored, following their thumping 6-1 opening win over Slovan Bratislava...

Champions League table top half - Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich lead with three points from their opening game and a goal difference of +5. Manchester United are fourth, Manchester City eighth, Aston Villa ninth, Liverpool 13th and Arsenal 15th - all level on points with the leaders but below them on goal difference after also winning their opening game
