Motherwell continued their impressive start to life under manager Alfred Johansson as Ibrahim Said's superb goal secured a narrow Scottish Premiership victory at Hibernian.

After successive wins over HB Torshavn in Conference League qualifying, Johansson's side opened their league campaign with three points thanks to an incisive team goal late on.

Debutant Alex Lowry played a neat one-two with Said before releasing Dylan Williams down the left, who squared for Said to slot past Raphael Sallinger and complete a second-half smash and grab.

Lukas Fadinger had given the visitors the half-time lead with a coolly-converted penalty after Josh Mulligan wiped out Oscar Priestman at the end of a slick move.

It was symptomatic of a lacklustre first 45 minutes for Hibs, but they played with far more energy and endeavour after the break and deservedly equalised through a spot-kick of their own.

Martin Boyle pounced on a short backpass from Williams and was brought to the ground by Priestman.

The Australia forward dusted himself off to find the same bottom corner as Fadinger had and from there, David Gray's side took control.

Owen Elding was denied by a good save from Alex Paulsen and then had a shot blocked off the line by Martin Moormann as the hosts pushed for a winner.

Nathan Lowe fired wide with the goal at his mercy before Moormann again came to Motherwell's rescue to head another Lowe effort off the line.

And Hibs' missed chances came back to bite them as Said finished off a sweeping move on 85 minutes.

Going back to last season, Hibs have now lost four straight home matches and were booed off at both half-time and full-time here.

There was plenty of fan discontent after a first-leg Conference League qualifying defeat by Malisheva last month. Although they progressed on aggregate with a 4-1 home victory on Thursday, there is evidently an air of frustration surrounding the club.

For large periods of the second half they were the better side, but they squandered multiple chances and ultimately paid the price.

With games in Europe against North Macedonia's Shkendija either side of a trip to Rangers in the league, Gray has a tough run of fixtures ahead as he tries to convince the doubters.

For Motherwell, this was a victory built on gritty defending and a passage of real quality.

They did not have it all their own way, but they dug in and repelled cross after cross with Moormann leading a superb defensive effort.

The Austrian centre-back made 10 clearances, with two of them denying certain goals.

And then, when the moment arose, they took it with both hands, sweeping forward with one-touch passing and a calm finish from the effervescent Said.

Given the departures at Fir Park this summer - both on the park and in the dugout - the way Motherwell have started the new season is very impressive.

It is still early days, but Johansson appears to be an excellent choice to continue the excellent work done last season by Jens Berthel Askou.

Hibernian head coach David Gray to Sky Sports: "I thought there was only one team that was going to win the game with the chances we created.

"We lose it through naivety. The goal we lose is really poor. Yes, people make mistakes, but don't make two or three. We also need to be more clinical. You need to take your chances when you're on top."

"In the first half we showed some good stuff on the ball, but more than tactics we have to praise the spirit of the team because at time we had to ride out storms."

Hibernian host Shkendija on Thursday (20:00) in the first leg of a Conference League third qualifying round tie, while Motherwell travel to HJK Helsinki on Thursday (17:00) in the same competition.
