On the pitch, this fixture has delivered some absolute beauties – even though the two nations have not met in a competitive fixture since the 2002 World Cup.

The notorious Hand of God – the goal Diego Maradona scored with his hand in the 1986 World Cup – David Batty’s missed penalty in the 1998 World Cup last-16, David Beckham’s red card for a foul on Diego Simeone in 2002.

These are all iconic moments that surely even younger England fans have heard – passed down in folklore by dejected England-supporting parents.

England have the chance to take a giant stride towards immortality tonight in their biggest match since winning the 1966 final at Wembley.

The Three Lions have reached two World Cup semi-finals in the six decades since then - at Italia '90 and then in Russia eight years ago - but this latest edition reignites an old rivalry, adding layers with history and controversial sub-plots.

England have lost the past two European Championship finals but, under the roof of the futuristic Atlanta Stadium, head coach Thomas Tuchel and his players have the chance to write themselves into legend by reaching the country's first men's World Cup final in 60 years.

The fact it was standing room only at Tuchel's pre-match media briefing, even though it was moved to a bigger venue, illustrates the scale of global interest in this chapter.

The match is England's latest chance to finally reach another global showpiece - a barrier that has proved insurmountable since Sir Alf Ramsey's side lifted the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966.

Watching Argentina, the way they have performed at this World Cup. I think they have had a gentle run. We saw them struggle to get past Egypt. Then the Swiss game turned on the sending off for Breel Embolo.

When it went 1-1 there was always going to be one winner. Argentina got away with it. They have been a team who have performed in moments.

Former Three Lions striker and BBC Sport pundit Wayne Rooney joined the Football Daily Podcast earlier on BBC Radio 5 Live. He's backing Thomas Tuchel's side to reach Sunday's showpiece.

Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke have both been used on the right so far in this World Cup - but Thomas Tuchel seems set to turn to Morgan Rogers in that position for tonight's semi-final.

England will never get a better chance of winning a World Cup semi-final than this.

Argentina are the holders and they are streetwise and, of course, they have got Lionel Messi... but this is an average Argentina side compared to some of their great teams of the past. I look at France and Spain in the other semi-final and they are not in their ballpark.

I covered Argentina's win over the Swiss in the quarter-finals and they were extremely lucky.

It was Breel Embolo's red card that changed the entire dynamic of that tie because, until he was sent off, Switzerland were the better team in the second half.

The Swiss can moan as much as they like about the video assistant referee getting involved for his second yellow card, but it was simulation by Embolo.

The frustration for them is that they will see Djed Spence throw himself to the floor to try to win England a penalty against Norway, and he did not receive a yellow card when that decision was reversed.

Still, the way the game went after Embolo's dismissal was good news for England.

Sutton's prediction: 3-1

Many of you will have backed Spain to reach the final this tournament. But France have looked like a proper side at this World Cup and they looked pretty poor last night.

Spain haven't blown everyone out of the water. But they've chipped away and worked their way to the final.

Much like they did in 2010, when they won it overall.

Ominous.

England are tonight fighting for a chance to face them on Sunday in what would be a repeat of the Euro 2024 final.

England have history at their feet - and in Jude Bellingham and Kane have two world-class players who have driven them to the last four.

Tuchel, meanwhile, is one of the world's most respected coaches, who openly relishes the cut and thrust of knockout football - as he proved when winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021.

His side have scored 13 goals at this World Cup, but 12 of those have come from Bellingham and Kane. Marcus Rashford, with the final goal in the 4-2 opening win against Croatia, is the only other player on the scoresheet so far.

That might suggest England are relying too heavily on Bellingham and Kane, but equally shows how their two key players are in the form of their lives.

If England have occasionally stuttered, so have Argentina, escaping from difficult situations against Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland in the knockout phase.

Like England, Argentina have lived on the edge - and Tuchel will hope this is the day they fail to escape.

Declan Rice cleared fit enough to start but Bukayo Saka is not.

Morgan Rogers is poised to come into England’s starting XI against Argentina.

The Aston Villa player is set to replace Noni Madueke from the team that started against Norway in the quarter-final.

Elsewhere, England are expected to stick with the same back-four that started against the Norwegians - with Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly expected to keep their place.

Declan Rice, who has been struggling with illness, is fit enough to start.
