England boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Sport: "If everyone gets what they like, then everyone gets an early goal and another goal, then it's an easy afternoon. You have to deal with the situation as they come.

"It got very difficult because they got a very early goal, but I have to say, after the first water break, there were three, four, five big chances. I think we had a penalty situation maybe in our favour, and we kept knocking.

"The goalkeeper [Lionel Mpasi] had unbelievable saves, and it got more difficult. The reaction and belief was one of a kind. They were ready to keep doing what was necessary to do, and we found a way to win. Well deserved, by the way, well deserved."

Pretty sure Kyle Walker retired from international football. But I take the point.

Any other right-backs out there that are available? Anyone?

The minute Tino Livramento got injured, Thomas Tuchel should have been on the phone to Kyle Walker.

Walker is still more than good enough and more than capable to play in this England team. That could really cost us...

It seems crazy that we're discussing the prospect of playing Declan Rice, surely England's best midfielder, at right-back.

You have to think that if that happens then something has gone pretty wrong somewhere. Would you play Rice at right-back? Hit the thumbs.

On playing Declan Rice at right-back...

No, I wouldn't. I feel he can give too much in that central midfield area. If you're going into the Mexico game which is going to be at altitude, you need his energy in midfield.

I would go with Ezri Konsa at right-back, and put John Stones alongside Marc Guehi. That is a better balance for the team.

Defensively there were far too many holes in the back four, and when we did give chances away the scored from their first one, should have scored with the Wissa one.

Putting Rice into right back worked because he was the one that got forward and played a part in the second goal, so Tuchel has a decision to make about putting him into right back.

If you asked me before the game I would have been very reluctant, but he can add a little bit of quality where we have lacked with the players we have picked up to now.

England vice-captain Declan Rice, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about looking exhausted: "It's what happens when you play in 30 degree heat I suppose. Tough game. Give it everything and bodies been through a lot in that match. Time to recover and go again."

On how he's feeling after dealing with a knock: "I'm fine. Good as gold. Good.

"It's a knockout game. They've got through a tough group and it was never going to be easy. You can never underestimate opposition as a neutral , as a player because they have quality and can hurt you at any given moment and they did. But other than that I think we had so many chances.

"Their goalkeeper, credit to him, he had an absolute worldie. Harry Kane, inevitable, scoring them goals. It was a deserved win but made a bit more hard work than we should've done. The main thing is knockouts we win and that's what we done."

On Kane scoring twice: "He's going to get chances. If you give him a chance it's a goal, I think personally. I've seen it too many times. It's ridiculous the goals he scores and how he scores them. His whole mentality around scoring, 72 for the season now, it's just ridiculous, so credit to him."

On whether the team will get better as games go on: "As the games go on, even today again we thought they were playing a back five, they played a back four and they were more open. We had more attacks and shots on goal. As the games go on we're going to keep getting better."

You almost want to be saving the resilient peformances for later on. You don't want to be using up that card early in the tournament, in the last-32 the Kane late goal to win, you want those scenes and celebrations in the semi-final, quarter-final. You take it, but you've got to learn from it and build on these performances.

For me, there are big concerns.

In particular, when England lose the ball they are so open.

Against a better team, I think we're in big trouble if we don't sort that out.

We're so open in midfield.

There's that phrase again. 'Job done'.

Job done is great. But it would be nice if England just blew us away some time, wouldn't it?

Right now England have to enjoy this moment. They got the job done in difficult circumstances, theiur captain pulled them through, they had to change multiple positions during the game, the crowd was starting to get edgy, but they got through it. The debrief going into the next couple of games is massive.

They are a tough team and then after that first break we were much better and their keeper made some unbelievable saves. We spoke about people having hero moments and it can be anyone. It was me today.

"We spoke all week about just being ourselves. There are still things to work on for sure and these rounds are just about getting through. We are in the part of ther tourament when you have to grind wins out, and that's what we have done today.

"We are the same as every other nation. We are through, so enjoy it. I want them to enjoy it with the fans, and then we go again in four days.

"We spoke after the Croatian game about subs making an impact and you saw that again. Over 90 minutes, we are tough to handle. I am pleased for everyone involved and hopefully we'll keep it going."

Today once again we've proved we find it very difficult to play against a team with the tactics that the three previous sides we've played against have and without Harry Kane we might not have made it through to the round of 16.

For England now you can't control who your opponents are and how they play but we can hope we face teams that want to play.

That early goal for DR Congo played perfectly into their hands and it hurt England. But unlike other times, the Panama game and today, we found a way.

It wasn't pretty but we got the job done.

England midfielder Elliot Anderson speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a tough game. We stuck by each other until the very end, and we got through.

"You look to the big-game players to get us through in the end. We build the foundations and try to get them the ball.

"I think we grew into the game and the first 20 minutes were poor. Their keeper was amazing and the subs made a massive difference.

"We'll enjoy it with fans and then we will get our heads down and get back on it."

I thought the subs were outstanding when they came on.

Part of that is because Thomas Tuchel has been brave enough to not play Bukayo Saka.

In previous regimes, we have seen players play because they're the best players.

He has been brave enough to leave Saka on the bench, he has changed Gordon and Rashford. He has kept them hungry and kept them on their toes.

You get the rewards of that.

It felt at one point England were lost.

Throughout the game, they got better and better. That is when you lean on the big superstars in the team.

We talked about Southgate at times not making the subs at the right times. Tuchel made the subs at the right time.

I think you have to give Thomas Tuchel so much credit for his in game management. So often for an England side we're guilty of defending our weaknesses rather than playing to our strengths and against Croatia in that final hydration break he made changes that allowed England to get that fourth goal.

The changes he made today, he made a slight formation change but in the last break he brought Eze on and almost to a three at the back.

The positivity of Thomas Tuchel is something that impresses me.

"We have to have that mindset if it is getting hard, it is getting hard, but don't lose patience and don't lose belief. The guy [Lionel Mpasi] was incredible the kind of saves he was making."
