Drey Wright's stunning strike helped Dundee secure a Scottish Premiership derby victory at rivals Dundee United and extended an alarming start to the season for Jim Goodwin's side.

In the only Scottish top-flight action of the weekend - after all five European representatives chose to postpone their league games before their play-off second legs - Wright's sublime opener proved to be the only moment of real class in a breathless encounter lacking in quality.

The Dundee full-back drove forward after a slack pass from United midfielder Abdoulaye Yoro and unleashed an unstoppable shot from distance just before the break.

Goodwin's men, who remain winless in the Premiership term and have failed to score in their past three matches in all competitions, then went two behind when Alan Forrest's scruffy attempt diverted in off Owen Bevan.

It could have been worse for the hosts had Ethan Hamilton burst the net following a scramble in the United box, but he was denied by a goal-saving block.

The home side had the better of the opening exchanges and pushed for a way back into the contest, but they were so often let down by poor decision-making and execution, with substitutes Zac Sapsford and Lachlan Rose putting chances wide.

Analysis: United in transition as Dundee defence impresses

United appear to be in a period of transition amid a style shift from Goodwin and another summer of upheaval within the playing squad.

There will be calls for the fanbase to show patience, and some will have been encouraged by neat patterns of play from their side, but no goals from 46 shots over the past three matches speaks volumes.

It all became a bit desperate after the break against a Dundee side inspired by fantastic defensive displays from centre-back pairing Ryan Astley and Owen Bevan.

Goalkeeper Owen Goodman, who clawed away a Vicko Sevelj header in the first period before denying Yoro at the neat post after the interval, also looks assured between the sticks.

With two wins from three challenging opening league fixtures, Steven Pressley's side now sit at the dizzy heights of second at the early stage of this season.

The Dens Park club have now won three of their past four visits to Tannadice, having not done so across the 21 years prior to 2024.

'Results have not been good enough' - Goodwin

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin: "I could stand here and talk about all the key metrics that we'll look back on but the stat that matters most is that scoreline.

"We started the game brightly, made a mistake in the middle of the pitch, and then Drey Wright hits an incredible strike. I felt we had a lot of momentum at the start of the second half but then we get the sucker punch from the corner.

"I'm certainly not panicking. I know there's going to be a lot of criticism coming my way and it's deserved but I've still got belief and confidence in the group. I think we're doing a lot of good things during the week but the reality is that needs to come through at the weekend."

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "We've come here with a game plan, but we didn't carry out any part of it, to be honest. But what was very apparent in our performance was the grit and determination.

"Sometimes winning away from home is being comfortable with the uncomfortable and we did that at times today. It was a group of players that were determined not to lose that derby and I couldn't be prouder of the players.

"We have to remember we're only three games into it, but I know a derby game is very important for momentum, the feel-good factor and very important for supporters, so I'm a very proud manager tonight."
