Wales' fastest man Jeremiah Azu is through to the men's 100m semi-finals after a comfortable start to his Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Azu won his heat in a time of 10:10 which meant he was the sixth fastest in qualifying.

The 17 fastest athletes are through to tomorrow's semi-finals where they will join the top seven ranked sprinters who were given a bye from the heats.

"I got out well, and then I just controlled it from the front," said Azu.

"With these days, it's more the nervous energy and the excitement that you can burn.

"So on the track, you want to be as smart as you can during the rounds. Today was just about qualifying and getting through to tomorrow.

"It's good to get the ball rolling. It's just been waiting, waiting, waiting, but now it's officially begun."

Wales bowls pair Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen booked their place in the semi-finals tonight despite a tie-break defeat against New Zealand in the final group game.

After winning the first four matches, Wales suffered a narrow loss to New Zealand duo Selina Goddard and Katelyn Inch.

Wales lost the first set 5-4, which was the first one they had dropped in the Games, before bouncing back to win the second 6-1.

The tie-break came down to a final measure from the officials with the Kiwis just been given the verdict.

Williams and Cowen still topped their group and will now play in the final four at 20:40 BST.

The Wales mixed Para-bowls pair in the B2-B3 category have also qualified for tonight's semi-final.

Julie Thomas and Steffan James, aided by directors Jamie Jones and John Wilson, topped their group and will face England in the final four at 19:00 BST.

Ross Owen finished his singles campaign with a 2-0 win against Fiji's Rajnesh Prasad but has not qualified for the knockout stages.

Day four will see the start of the athletics programme with Wales' fastest man Jeremiah Azu beginning the campaign in the 100m heats.

Azu, 25, finished fifth in the Commonwealth Games final in Birmingham in 2022 and has since claimed an Olympic bronze relay medal and been crowned world indoor 60m champion.

Team Wales captain Olivia Breen will begin her programme in the women's T38 100m heats with the final in the evening, while hammer thrower Amber Simpson will be in action in qualification.

The evening session will see Wales' first chance of a medal with Ellie Bowen in the women's seated shot-put final, while Isabelle Boffey will compete in the women's 800m heats.

Boxers Owain Harris-Allan, Orlando Holley-Sotomi and Daniel Pitt are all in last 16 action, while weightlifter Catrin Haf Jones competes in the women's 58kg final.

Unbeaten women's bowls pairs Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen will look to cement their semi-final place when they play New Zealand in the final group game in the morning.

If they top the group they will play the final four in the evening session but Ross Owen is out of contention in the men's singles.

Julie Thomas and Steffan James, aided by directors Jamie Jones and John Wilson, face England in the semi-finals of the Para-bowls mixed B2/B3 section.

Swimmers Tyler Melbourne-Smith and Theodora Taylor will be involved in finals in the evening session.

After winning two relay medals, Olympic champion Matt Richards starts his individual campaign in the 100m freestyle alongside Harry Milne and Dan Jones.

The two wheelchair basketball teams finish their pool campaigns against Scotland.

In gymnastics, twins Abigail Roper and Emily Roper will compete in the women's vault final, while Jemima Taylor and Emily Roper will participate in the women's uneven bars final.

Olympic gymnast Ruby Evans will be back in action on Tuesday following the disappointment of her sixth-place finish in the all-round individual competition.

The Wales mixed Para-bowls pair in the B2-B3 category have qualified for the semi-final after defeating Scotland in a dramatic tie-break on Sunday evening.

Julie Thomas and Steffan James, aided by directors Jamie Jones and John Wilson, topped their group and will face England on Monday evening in the last four at 19:00 BST.

Scotland and New Zealand will compete in the other semi-final.

Wales women's pair Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen are also in contention to be in semi-final action on Monday night.

Heavyweight Connor Williams became the fourth Welsh boxer to reach the Commonwealth Games quarter-finals after stopping Namibia's Petrus Jacobus Kotze.

Williams, from Swansea, forced his opponent to have two standing counts in the first round and repeated the feat in the second before the referee stopped the fight.

The 23-year-old will now fight Duken Holo Tutakitoa-Williams of Niue on Tuesday afternoon, knowing he is one fight away from a medal.

Williams joins defending champion Rosie Eccles, Niamh Brookes and Helen Jones in the quarter-finals, while Orlando Holley-Sotomi, Owain Harris-Allan and Daniel Pitt are in last 16 action on Monday.

There was another convincing win for the Wales women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team after they defeated Nigeria 17-1.

The women's quartet of Anastasia Blease, Chloe Morgan, Libi Phillips and Molly Lander had already beaten India 16-1 the previous day.

Lander scored seven points with Morgan contributing four and Phillips and Blease chipping in with three each.

Wales complete their group stage with a game against Scotland on Monday evening.

Olympic gymnast Ruby Evans failed to claim a Commonwealth Games medal in the women's all-round individual competition in Glasgow.

Evans had qualified second and was considered a medal hope for Wales.

The 19-year-old was in second place at the halfway stage of the competition but suffered a poor balance beam discipline on the third rotation.

A slip from the beam left her with too much to do for a podium finish despite a thrilling performance on the floor.

Evans finished sixth overall and was emotional at the conclusion of the competition as she tried to cope with her disappointment.

Her Welsh team-mate Emily Roper finished one place behind her in seventh with a score of 50.350 from her four rotations.

Roper entered the final rotation just 0.5 points off a podium spot, but her medal hopes were dashed after falling to her side upon landing a somersault in her floor routine.

The gold medal was won by Canada's Elsabeth Black.

Roper will go again in the vault final alongside her twin sister Abigail on Monday afternoon before also competing in the uneven bars with Jemima Taylor.

Evans, meanwhile, will contest the beam and floor finals on Tuesday.

The highest ever finish for a Welsh female gymnast in the all-around competition remains fifth place by Elizabeth Beddoe in Glasgow in 2014.

The 16 finalists competed over the four disciplines of vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor.

After beating Malaysia in the opening game, Wales men's 3x3 wheelchair basketball team lost 16-12 to South Africa in their second game.

Alex Wilson scored eight points for Wales, while Ben Johnson-Rolfe claimed the other four.

The result means that Wales are not yet guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds

Weightlifter Nikole Roberts has finished sixth in the women's 48kg after becoming the first Team Wales competitor in action in her sport.

The 22-year old was a crowd favourite, smiling and waving on every trip to the platform.

After failing to lift 73kg with her third and final snatch, Roberts scored 70kg in the snatch.

The Bangor lifter successfully lifted 84kg in the clean and jerk with her second attempt, before failing at 88kg.

This gave her a final total of 154kg, 6kg behind England's Tammy Wong.

India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom won her third successive Commonwealth gold, breaking the Games records in the Snatch with 85kg, clean and jerk with 105kg and the overall total of 190kg.

Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed silver with 168kg, with Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry in third.
