  1. Ukrainian MP 'cannot be optimistic' about energy ceasefire actually succeedingpublished at 17:39 BST

    Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik

We've just heard from Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik, who casts doubt on the efficacy of Donald Trump's energy ceasefire.

She tells BBC News the world has already seen that Trump is capable of making "out of the blue" announcements without agreeing them with both parties beforehand.

Rudik echoes Zelensky in saying that Ukraine is "very interested" in a ceasefire that saves people's lives and preserves its energy system - adding that should the US president "by some miracle" secure this deal, it would be "groundbreaking".

Asked how likely it is in the context of Trump's recent diesel agreement with Russia, she says: "I cannot be optimistic here".

    • As a reminder, Trump on Friday announced he had struck a deal with Putin to have millions of tonnes of Russian diesel released into the US

Five years into the war, Russia and Ukraine keep exchanging daily strikes.

This weekend alone, Russian tech giant Yandex paused its operations at a data centre near Moscow after the facility was struck by an Ukrainian drone - the third attack on its sites this week. Kyiv said it was targeting places that provide revenue streams for Moscow's war machine.

In Ukraine, the State Emergency Service said six people were injured in Russian attacks overnight on four districts in its south-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region. And yesterday, 23 people - including four children - were killed in Russian attacks in Zaporizhzhia.

In recent weeks, Russia has been launching constant air raids on the capital Kyiv, including an attack last week that killed four people.

Earlier this week, a Russian missile killed 22 people including five children in a n apartment block in Pryluky, east of Kyiv.

  3. Air sirens in Kyiv a reminder the war continuespublished at 17:24 BST

The air raid sirens have just sounded across Kyiv, warning of incoming drones.

It’s a reminder that even if Donald Trump’s “energy ceasefire” is respected, the war is not over and Russia continues attacking Ukraine.

It’s not clear what the target of these latest strikes is but some Ukrainian politicians are doubtful this ceasefire will bring much relief to the people of Kyiv and other cities who are already living with power cuts and transport disruption.

  4. Russia 'continues to refuse' energy truce by striking Ukraine, says French presidentpublished at 17:14 BST

French President Emmanuel Macron says France "unreservedly supports" a "genuine energy truce" that's acceptable to Ukraine.

But Russia so far "continues to refuse it by intensifying its strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure in recent hours", he says on X. He adds that "France will continue to stand by Ukraine and President Zelensky".

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has also expressed her "full support" for Zelensky following a call with him earlier today.

She says she fully backs a "ceasefire that would protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia", adding that the war has entered a "new, grimmer phase".

  5. Russia has not yet commented on so-called 'energy ceasefire'published at 17:03 BST

Russia has not yet commented on Donald Trump's "energy ceasefire" announcement.

As a reminder, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios earlier the agreement was "news for me". He has since said that Kyiv "supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well".

    Dan Johnson
    Ukraine correspondent, reporting from Kyiv

This announcement seems to have come as a surprise, at least to Ukraine.

It sounds like it’s been announced unilaterally and then agreed to, rather than having been negotiated jointly.

President Zelensky has just posted on X, writing "Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well".

He says he’s awaiting details from the Americans but that Ukraine always fully supports steps toward de-escalation.

    But we’ve been here before.

On 14 September, President Trump wrote on Truth Social that both sides had agreed not to strike each other’s energy facilities. Russia continued attacking Ukraine’s power network so the reciprocal strikes went on.

Will this announcement, apparently out of the blue, have any more impact?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has just confirmed he backs the energy ceasefire announced by Trump.

"Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well," he writes on X.

"We are awaiting details from the American side," Zelensky says. "For our part, Ukraine always FULLY supports steps toward de-escalation, the protection of lives, and the decisions needed to end the war and guarantee lasting peace."

His confirmation comes after he told US news site Axios a little while ago that the deal was "news to me".

In the post, Zelensky says he's spoken to about the partial truce with Canada's Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Nato chief Mark Rutte.

  8. Ukraine will go to polls in exchange for 60-day total ceasefire, says Zelenskypublished at 16:41 BST

Less than an hour before Trump made his announcement, Volodymyr Zelensky had reiterated Ukraine would halt attacks on Russian refineries if Moscow ended strikes on its energy infrastructure.

"Don't attack us. Don't kill our children. We will stop attack[ing] your diesel," he told ABC's This Week. "And I think it's [a] fair, fair deal."

Zelensky also indicated he'd be ready to hold fresh elections in exchange for a 60-day "total ceasefire" after the US president on Saturday said it was time "for a new leader" in Kyiv.

He previously resisted calls from the US for fresh elections, pointing to complications with holding a vote in parts of the country that are active war zones or under Russian occupation.

He, however, insisted that it was up to Ukrainian voters "to choose one or another person" to lead the country.

  9. Trump's post comes day after he called for Ukraine to 'get a new president'published at 16:27 BST

Donald Trump's post comes after tensions flared again with Ukraine's President Volodymr Zelensky over the weekend.

On Saturday, he said Zelensky "better damn well stop" authorising strikes on Russian oil refineries, and that it was "time for Ukraine to get a new president".

'Time for Ukraine to get a new president', says Trump

Zelensky had criticised a surprise diesel deal between the US and Russia, announced on Friday. He called it a gift to Putin.

For context, the war has pushed up fuel prices around the world, putting pressure on Trump at home as Americans struggle with rising costs.

His party is also facing crucial midterm elections in just a few weeks' time.

Earlier today, Zelensky said Ukraine would stop striking Russian oil refineries if Moscow in turn stopped attacking its energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has told US news site Axios that Donald Trump's announcement "was news for me".

"But if Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree," he says.

A senior official close to Zelensky has reportedly also told the Financial Times: "Nobody has heard [of it]."

Trump said earlier that "both parties have agreed", as he declared an immediate "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine.

The BBC is attempting to contact the Ukrainian side.

  11. 'Do not break it!' - Trump's announcement in fullpublished at 16:10 BST

US President Donald Trump's post claiming an "energy ceasefire" has been struck was short and didn't contain much detail.

He wrote on Truth Social: "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!"

We've asked the White House for more detail.

US President Donald Trump says an "energy ceasefire" has been agreed between Russia and Ukraine "effective immediately" and that both parties have agreed.

Russia is yet to comment, but US news site Axios reports Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Trump's announcement is "news for me".

The president had earlier warned Ukraine to "damn well stop" attacking Russia's oil refineries.

It comes amid a bubbling row between Trump and Zelensky, who on Sunday said they will be "ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Russia stops striking our energy infrastructure".

Both Russia and Ukraine have stepped up attacks on infrastructure in recent months as the war between them continues into its fifth year following Russia's full-scale invasion.

We'll bring you more on this shortly.
