Buli
大家好,欢迎收听 BBC 英语教学的 “你问我答” 节目。This is Question and Answer of the Week, where we answer your questions about English language, culture and life. My name's Buli, and I've got Georgie here to help me answer this week's question. How are you, Georgie?

Georgie
I'm pretty good, thanks Buli. Just FYI, though, I've got a meeting straight after this recording.

Buli
Right. So you'd like to begin ASAP? We can do that.

Georgie
That would be great. How are you, anyway?

Buli
Yeah, I'm well, thanks. Let's hear this week's question.

Question
我在和外国同事发邮件或者发消息的时候总是看到各种英文缩写,但有时候不知道这些缩写到底是什么意思。除了 “WFH” 和 “FYI”,请问还有哪些缩写在写邮件、发消息或者开会的时候很常见?

Georgie
It's a great question, because we often use these shortcuts to make communications quicker and easier, but if you don't know them, it can be hard to follow what's going on.

Buli
是的。而且不只是文字交流,其实我们在说英语的时候也经常会用到一些缩略词 “acronyms”。缩略词指的是用一个短语或表达的单词首字母来组成一个简短又顺口的新单词。Like when you said 'FYI', Georgie, which means 'for your information'.

Georgie
Yes. When you say 'FYI', the meaning is similar to 'just letting you know'. You're just giving someone information, and often no action is required. Just FYI, Buli, this acronym is usually neutral sounding, but it can sound rude or passive aggressive if you're delivering information you think the person should already know. For example, 'FYI, this information was in the previous email'.

Buli
Ooh, that makes me shudder. “FYI” 的完整说法是 “for your information”。在工作中,这个说法的意思类似于 “请知悉”。当人们用 “FYI” 来引出某条信息的时候,往往是想表达 “我觉得这个信息你需要知道一下,但不需要你马上做什么”。

不过有时候,人们也会先回答对方的问题,然后再用 “FYI” 略带严厉地指出对方原本可以怎么用更简单的方式、更早地获取这些信息,暗示 “这件事你早就应该知道了”。

在节目的一开始,我还用到了 “ASAP” 这个缩略词。“ASAP” 的全称是 “as soon as possible(尽快,越快越好)”。这个词的用法跟副词 “immediately(立刻,马上)” 和 “straightaway(立即,毫不犹豫)” 基本一致。比如,我们可以说 “Can you get that report to me ASAP?” 意思就是 “你能尽快把那份报告给我吗?”

Georgie
Now, the listener also mentioned 'WFH'. That means 'working from home' or 'work from home'. Interestingly, this one is not common in speech because it actually takes longer to say 'WFH' than 'working from home', because the acronym has more syllables. But it is a common shortcut in digital communications. What are some others, Buli?

Buli
Well, I've seen people use 'TBC' and 'TBD'.

Georgie
Oh yeah. 'TBC' means 'to be confirmed', used a lot in scheduling and event planning. It means we might have a rough idea about what's going to happen, but we're waiting for the final details to be decided or confirmed.

Buli
Right. And I know that 'TBD' means 'to be determined' or 'to be decided'.

“TBC” 和 “TBD” 是一对意思非常相近的缩略词,它们分别表示 “to be confirmed” 和 “to be determined or decided”。

这两个缩略词的区别在于,“TBC” 形容那些 “已经基本敲定了,只等最终确认(confirm)” 的工作和事务,而 “TBD” 指的则是那些 “最终方案或选项还有待决定(decide)” 的事情。It's common to say both of these in speech as well, isn't it?

Georgie
It is. Another helpful acronym is 'OOO', meaning 'out of office'. This one you wouldn't say in speech, but it's often written in emails to let colleagues know you're unavailable and may be slow to respond. It could mean you're on holiday, for example, 'I'll be OOO between these dates on annual leave, so please contact this person for urgent matters.'

Buli
Right. Or just that you'll be away from your desk temporarily.

在电子邮件中,“OOO” 也是一个十分常见的缩略词,它的意思是 “out of office(不在办公室)”。要注意的是,其实不只是从短期到长期的休假,任何让人暂时离开工位、不方便联系的事情都可以是 “OOO”,比如,去吃午饭或者临时去医院看病。

你正在收听的是 BBC 英语教学制作的 “你问我答” 节目。在本期节目中,我和 Georgie 正在分享一些在工作场合常见的 “acronyms(缩略词)”。

Georgie
Something that's worth noting about these acronyms is that sometimes the acronym itself takes on a slightly different tone or meaning to the original phrase, especially in speech. For example, saying 'FYI' in speech feels more informal and possibly more friendly than saying 'for your information'.

Buli
Absolutely.

Georgie
Yes. In general, writing words in capital letters often has the connotation of shouting, and therefore aggression. So, you may see people writing acronyms in lowercase letters to soften the tone.

And sometimes, acronyms can be said as full words rather than their individual letters. For example, 'A-S-A-P' is sometimes said as 'ASAP'.

Buli
OK, Georgie, I remember you have another appointment after this, so why don't we finish this programme ASAP?
