Dangerous headstones threat
Gravestones
Council officials say many gravestones are unsafe
More than 2,500 headstones in Lancaster could be in danger of falling on visitors.

The number of potentially dangerous memorials is revealed in a report to members of Lancaster City Council.

A pilot project has already been carried out at one cemetery, where unsafe memorials have either been repaired or laid flat.

The report concentrates on memorials over five feet high, as they are considered to be more dangerous if they are not secure.

An investigation at Morecambe cemetery found more than half of the stones were a potential problem.

They were either repaired, reinforced or laid flat on the ground.

Council members are now to consider the costs of a similar programme at six other cemeteries.
