Asylum seeker movement halted
Mr Bahmani's relatives lay flowers where he was stabbed
No more asylum seekers will be moved to Sunderland after the death of a man there last month, the Home Office has confirmed.
Payman Bahmani, 34, died on 28 August after being stabbed in the Hendon area of the city. An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder, racially aggravated assault and violent disorder in connection with the incident. The Home Office said it had temporarily suspended sending asylum seekers to the city after a request from local police.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police told BBC Radio 4 the situation would be reviewed as tensions calm over the next few weeks. Andrew Hogg, of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, called for the Home Office's move to be extended to other areas. He said: "The violence that is endemic in some communities is at a level that personal safety has to be paramount." But Daoud Zaaroura, from the North of England Refugee Service said: "It will give a message that racism could win."
