An ever-changing world of entertainment

Evolving from its origins as a trading post and later a centre for gaming, Macao has grown to become a highly desirable leisure destination for one and all. Singles, couples, families and groups of friends can enjoy the finest in international entertainment and cuisine, while staying in world-class accommodation, situated within architecturally striking buildings.

This is a city that is rich in heritage and proud of its cosmopolitan history, yet brimming with the excitement of the new. Something fresh is always happening in Macao, with the constant unveiling of new celebrity chef restaurants — such as the recent launch of Gordon Ramsay's Pub & Grill — and luxurious name-brand hotels, top-tier sports tournaments, megastar music concerts, fashion shows, fascinating arts and culture festivals, and major celebrations peppering the calendar.

In the past couple of years alone, Macao has also witnessed the openings of the luxury Palazzo Versace Macau and W hotels. Concerts from top acts and sporting events are a regular fixture. The MGM Tennis Masters, ITTF Men's and Women's World Cup, the SJM Macao Open golf tournament and the annual Macau Grand Prix attract spectators from far and wide, while the annual SJM Macao International Dragon Boat race never fails to excite.

Lovers of traditional Chinese culture and vibrant streets will also love Macao's annual Lunar New Year celebrations, while the Macao Arts Festival (MAF) features installations and performances that promises to delight locals and visitors alike every year.

A month-long event held annually, MAF is a celebration of art, theatre and more. Its goal is to facilitate cultural exchanges and co-operation to promote the development of local arts, encourage international creative collaborations, and importantly, to showcase Macao's position as a regional arts hub.

First held in 1988, visitors were invited to experience a huge variety of artistic disciplines from music, dance, folk arts and photography exhibitions to handicraft, calligraphy and painting. In 2024, more than 200 artists from 10 countries participated in the 34th edition, themed 'Wondrous Encounters'. However, one of the festival's key goals is to celebrate the local scene and Macao's unique intangible cultural heritage. In addition to traditional productions of Patuá Theatre and Cantonese Opera, MAF encouraged new creations and art groups to connect with foreign artists to elevate their offerings. One example on display at the 34th MAF was Frankenstein/Creatures, a joint production by a local art group and a Japanese-based theatre company.

Beyond the traditional lies the whimsically wonderful entertainment offerings of Macao's integrated resorts. The Londoner Macao, opened in early 2023 as the newest property within Sands Resorts Macao, is a prime example. Theatrics come to life everywhere you look at the property, which includes a replica of the iconic Elizabeth Tower (often referred to by its clock bell Big Ben), an authentic vintage red London bus, a recreation of the Abbey Road zebra crossing, and even a ride with a holographic David Beckham in the back of a London black cab.

Further to these attractions, Brett Ingram, assistant vice president of event development and management at Sands China Ltd., highlighted the 'Changing of the Guard' performance that takes place six days a week within The Londoner Macao's Crystal Palace foyer. This theatrical display of pomp and ceremony sweeps visitors away to London, Ingram said. "Over 20 artists create a spellbinding spectacle, with The Londoner Macao's Scots Guards, heralding trumpeters and drummers appearing across multiple levels," he said. Ingram also highlighted the nightly Londoner Light and Sound Spectacular, which "captivates visitors with breathtaking audio and visual effects. This show lights up the Cotai Strip every night with British-themed music from iconic artists and movies.

A dazzling playground of luxury and entertainment, Macao is also home to two world-class event hubs, Galaxy International Convention Center (GICC) and the colossal 16,000-seat Galaxy Arena.

"Over the years, we have joined forces with global entertainment titans, celebrity icons and top-tier acts around the region to deliver world-class entertainment," says Mr Kevin Kelley, chief operating officer of Galaxy Entertainment Group.

Since 2011, Galaxy Macau has been one of the strong drivers of this glamorous evolution, with eight prestigious hotel brands to call their own. From the tranquil elegance of Banyan Tree Macau and the sophisticated The Ritz-Carlton, Macau, to the chic newcomers Raffles at Galaxy Macau and Andaz Macau, each hotel offers its own distinct experience. With many options under one roof, Macao invites visitors to immerse themselves in a world where luxury enjoyment knows no bounds.

For those with a taste for gastronomic delights, SJM Resorts offers a constant stream of culinary rewards, frequently hosting world-class chefs. At SJM Resorts, both Grand Lisboa and Grand Lisboa Palace are renowned for their culinary extravaganzas and exclusive dining experiences. These range from the Michelin Guide Gala Dinner to a six-hand collaboration featuring Federico Pucci, head chef of Don Alfonso 1890, alongside twin chefs Thomas and Mathias Sühring from the Michelin two-star restaurant Sühring.

Robuchon au Dôme, another highlight, stands as a pinnacle of fine dining in the region. It has proudly maintained an impressive three Michelin stars for an unbroken streak of sixteen years (2009–2024). This culinary gem continues to set the standard for exceptional dining experiences.

Meanwhile, an array of traditional and modern art keeps guests and visitors at MGM COTAI entertained. With art central to its concept of luxury hospitality, the resort has dedicated art spaces within its luxuriously appointed public spaces. MGM partners with renowned local and international artists to curate arts experiences that intrigue and inspire, such as the show stopping Fondant Art Exhibition at MGM COTAI featuring works by China's "Sugar King" Zhou Yi. In November 2024, the opening of the Poly MGM Museum at MGM MACAU will showcase Chinese cultural relics, including a Chinese palatial column decorated with chisonné enamel.

MGM COTAI is also where drama and action reside. At the resort's theatre, renowned director Zhang Yimou will take up residency with Macau 2049—a performance commemorating the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the 25th year of Macao's handover. Musicians and dancers at the peak of their craft will be a part of this production. Every lunar new year, MGM also holds the International Lion Dance Championships, with a key highlight being the competition's all-female category.

Nearby, Melco's Hollywood-inspired, cinematically-themed Studio City integrated resort also prides itself on offering diverse entertainment for all ages and tastes. Key attractions include the Golden Reel, the world's highest figure-8 Ferris wheel at 130 metres , and the Studio City Event Center (SCEC), a 5,000-seat arena for theatrical productions, sporting events and award shows concerts including the Melco Residency Concert Series launched in 2023.

The resort is thriving with the recent additions of two luxury hotel towers, including W Macau – Studio City, hailed as one of the World's Most Beautiful Hotels. The resort also features the newly opened Epic Tower, the Studio City Cinema with nine state-of-the-art theatres, and the 26,000 sq m Studio City Water Park.

Kevin Benning, Studio City's senior vice president and property general manager, highlighted the Water Park's "25 thrilling attractions", including the remarkable transparent-bottomed Oblivion Pool, plus Macao's first-ever water coaster and indoor surfing simulator. The park, he said, "features an outdoor and indoor area for aquatic fun available for all-weather and all-year-round.“

Macao is also actively evolving its entertainment scene to more enthusiastically embrace culture and sports. In those areas and beyond, Benning said, Studio City's goal is to "present guests with new and unforgettable experiences". He mentioned recent events such as the World Snooker Masters, and upcoming skateboarding competition FISE: Battle of the Champions, which will take place in Macao for the first time in March 2025.

Showcasing sport is also top of mind for at Wynn Macau, which recently hosted the first ever International Series Macao golf tournament. Aside from the high-profile players and top-tier competition it was a chance to showcase what makes Macao unique. “It's so important to weave in the local culture to create an experience that will be etched into the hearts and minds of attendees for a lifetime” says Linda Chen, president, vice chairman and executive director of Wynn Macau, Limited. In particular, Macao's diverse cuisine is something to be celebrated, explains Chen: “Gastronomy is one of the best ways to showcase Macao's heritage.”

Wynn's spotlight on gastronomy didn't stop there though, with Wynn Macau recently hosted a major oenological event – the International Wine Challenge (IWC) A Feast in Honor of Award-Winning Sakes, and earlier this year, welcomed star chef André Chiang for a hotpot pop-up at Mizumi restaurant, dubbed "Broth by André Chiang". Sauciness of another sort was the order of the day at the immersive cabaret experience Candor, showing across three weekends from July to August at Wynn Palace's Entertainment Event Marquee, while starting from August, things got equally racy with an exhibition of exclusive hypercars at Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace.

With its continuing transformation and ever-evolving offerings, Macao is rapidly becoming the new home for everything from world-class arts and artistes to culinary masterclasses and cultural celebrations. No matter your taste in entertainment, one thing's for certain — there's something happening in Macao to satisfy every appetite or craving.
