Southend have been dealt a blow in their plans for a new 22,000 stadium after the Government called in their application for a public inquiry.
Southend Borough Council and Rochford District Council both agreed to give planning permission for the stadium.
But a lengthy delay could now ensue and chairman Ron Martin told the club's website: "These procedures are integral but nevertheless disappointing.
"One wonders, other than delay, what a public inquiry will achieve."
