Preston have been ordered to pay Port Vale an initial fee of £35,000 for striker Dave Hibbert by a tribunal.
Five further instalments of £10,000 will follow if and when he makes 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 appearances.
Vale will receive a further £20,000 if North End are promoted to the Premiership, while there is also a 25% sell-on clause if Hibbert moves on.
The 19-year-old moved from Vale Park, where he was out of contract, to Deepdale at the end of June.
"We felt we had a good case, and got a good result," Preston chairman Derek Shaw told his club's website.
"I thought the hearing was very fair and very well-handled, with people who know the game inside out."
But Vale chairman Bill Bratt, who had turned down an initial bid of £60,000 from North End, told his club's website: "I am very, very disappointed with the amount.
"I believe he has potential, and he is worth a lot more than we have ended up with.
"This just goes to prove that there is no justice for smaller clubs.
