Nicky Wroe's first-half penalty secured Torquay's victory over Hereford and their third successive home league win.
On-loan Southampton winger Jake Thomson's trickery led to the goal as he sliced between two defenders being brought down by Darren Jones.
Torquay penalty specialist Wroe scored with a thumping spot-kick.
Tyrone Thomson scraped the upright with a shot, while Wayne Carlisle twice had to block Hereford efforts and Leon Constantine also had a shot blocked.
Hereford manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester:
"The penalty changed the course of the game as until then, we had got plenty of territorial advantage and had passed the ball quite well.
"They got into our penalty area from a throw-in too easily and it was a soft penalty from our point of view.
"That changed it in the first half and obviously they got their tails up going a goal ahead."
